Abstract

The invention relates to a self closing valve (1-3, 5-6) for an opening in a container for refuse. The valve comprises a rocker (1-3) with two blades (1-2) that may be pivoted around a rocker carrier (5). The rocker is balanced such that it, when unloaded, tends towards a position where the first blade (1) seals the opening. The rocker is used to seal a ash container and is opened when a cigarette butt is put in the opening of the ash container. The second blade is provided with an angle stop (3) that limits the maximum angular movement of the rocker from its unloaded position, and the angle stop (3) comprises at least one point that stops the angular movement of the rocker at maximum extent. Sticky substances tend to build up on the rocker, which without the pointy angle stop could cause the rocker to get stuck in an open state due to adhesion. With the pointy angles stop (3), the adhesive action becomes small, such that the rocker easily returns to a closed state. In an advantageous embodiment, the angle stop (3) during use extends upwards, and then tends to slow down the motion of built up layers of particles, such that the rocker remains balanced. It then returns to a closed state even after such a build up of particles on the two blades of the rocker.

Description

Self-closing valve
The present invention relates to a self-closing valve according to the introductory portion of the independent claim.
In particular, it relates to such a self-closing valve intended for use with an ash container. Background of the invention
Ash rays with a self closing valve are known and are intended to contain smoke and gases from cigarette butts in the interior of the ash tray. Cigarette butt emits tar that builds up a sticky layer and this layer may prevent the self closing valve from functioning properly. Sticky and viscous substances may prevent valves from working in the intended way in many other contexts too.
An object of the invention is therefore to provide a self-closing valve that is more resilient to build up of sticky and viscous substances, without its function being impaired.
These and other objects are attained by a self-closing valve according to the characterising portion of the independent claim.
Summary of the invention
The invention relates to a self closing valve 1-3, 5-6 for an opening in a container for refuse. The valve comprises a rocker 1-3 comprising a first and a second blade 1-2 that may be pivoted around a rocker carrier 5. The rocker is balanced such that it, when unloaded, tends towards a position where the first blade 1 seals the opening. Typically, the rocker is used to seal a ash container and is opened when a cigarette butt is put in the opening of the ash container. The second blade is provided with an angle stop 3 that limits the maximum angular movement of the rocker from its unloaded position, and the angle stop 3 comprises at least one point that stops the angular movement of the rocker at maximum extent. Sticky substances tend to build up on the rocker, which without the pointy angle stop could cause the rocker to get stuck in an open state due to adhesion. With the pointy angles stop 3, the adhesive action becomes advantageously small, such that the rocker easily returns to a closed state. In an advantageous embodiment, the angle stop 3 during use extends upwards, and then tends to slow down the motion of built up layers of particles, such that the rocker remains balanced. It then returns to a closed state even after such a build up of particles on the two blades of the rocker.
Typically, the valve is arranged on the underside of the lid of a container for ash. During such use, tar tends to build up on the rocker and the pointy angle stop is then of particular use for minimizing the adhesive action of the tar. Further, ash and tar tend to build up particularly on the blade that receives cigarette butts, so as the angle stop extends upwards from the second blade; it prevents ash and tar from leaving the second blade. This means that the amount of substance building up on the two blades becomes more equal.

Fig. 1 shows an embodiment of a valve 1-3, 5-6 according to the invention in a closed state. The valve 1-3, 5-6 is arranged at the upper end of an ash tray, and the ash tray lid 7 is seen in the figure from the side. An opening extends through the lid 7, and smokers places cigarette butts in the opening such that they fall down into the interior of the ash tray and are stored there in an air tight container. The container is made from a substance that is non flammable, and as the container becomes full the ash tray lid 7 is lifted up and the container is emptied.
From the edges of the opening a series of teeth 8 extend upwards, and a funnel is normally threaded onto these, that collects cigarette butts and brings them towards the centre of the funnel and down through the opening. From the edges of the opening a pipe 6 cut at an angle extends, that constitutes part of the valve. One 1 of two blades 1-2 of a rocker sits against the lower end opening of the pipe cut at an angle, in such a way that it seals the opening. With the rocker in this position, the valve 1-3, 5-6 is closed, and no smoke or gases from the interior of the container may leave the ash tray. The lower end opening of the pipe cut at an angle forms an oval and the first blade of the rocker is also oval, such that it just covers the opening when the valve is in a closed state.
The rocker 1-3 is constituted by two plane blades 1-2, attached to each other in an approximately orthogonal fashion. The first blade extends at an angle downwards to the left from the attachment point with the second blade, approximately 45 degrees from the horizontal plane with the valve in a closed state. The second blade extends at an angle downwards and to the right from the attachment point with the first blade, approximately 45 degrees from the horizontal plane with the valve in a closed state. The centre of gravity of the rocker is selected in such a way that, when the rocker is unloaded, due to its own weight the rocker tends to move towards a position where the valve is closed. If a small weight is put on the first blade, it is weighed down, the blade angles downwards such that the weight may fall down into the container, and the rocker then returns to the original position. The rocker hangs in a rocker carrier 5 and balances in that.
Fig. 2 shows the first embodiment in an open state, that is just after a weight on the first blade has forced the valve to an open state. The weight is typically constituted by a cigarette butt or a match stick, that is lightweight objects, so it takes a well balanced rocker for it to open when loaded by such a small weight and then return to the closed state.
As the valve is being used, a layer of tar and ash builds up on the rocker and it may then become out of balance or tar may act as an adhesive that locks the rocker in an open or semi-open state. In order to prevent tar building up on the rocker to act as an adhesive that glues the second blade to the underside of the lid 7, the second blade is provided with a pointy angle stop 3 extending up towards the lid. The second blade may thus only, as in the figure, at its furthest extent reach far enough to touch the underside of the lid with the tip of the angle stop. The point of contact is very small, so the tar only has a very limited adhesion and the risk of the rocker being stuck in an open position is minimized.
On the upper side of the two blades of the rocker, a layer of ash may also build up, which could make the rocker become out of balance. The most important is that the rocker does not get locked in an open state, such that smoke and gases leaves the container, so the angle stop 3 is also intended to slow down ash sliding of the second blade. In this way, potential build up of ash takes place to a slightly higher degree on the second blade, if supply of ash to the two blades is equal. Typically, more ash is supplied to the first blade, so the angel stop compensates for this and makes sure the actual build up of tar and ash on the two blades is as close to equal as possible, making the rocker remain balanced.
Fig. 3 shows the rocker used in the valve according to the invention separately. In the figure, the first blade extends upwards at an angle and the second blade extends at downwards at an angle. The two blades extend from an attachment point that is constituted by a folding line between the two blades. This folding line is arranged on two pegs in the rocker carrier 5 and the rocker hangs on these two pegs.
The angle stop 3 is perpendicularly angled from the second blade and provided with two points, such that it has an M-shaped profile. The two points constitute the only two points of contact with the underside of the lid. The side of the second blade that i use faces upwards, that is the side that in the figure is directed towards left, is the side that primarily gathers ash. The angle stop extends in the direction that side faces, and thus works as a stop that slows down ash and tar sliding downwards.
The rocker is made from one continuous metal sheet part, where the two blades are angled from each other along a folding line and where the angle stop if bent from the second blade.
Obviously, the rocker may be embodied in some other fashion, and the different parts may be joined in some other way that exemplified by the presented embodiment. Obviously, the rocker may be hanged in some other way that balancing on two pegs in the rocker carrier; as long as it may freely the angled away from this position and due to its own weight return to this position. The angle stop is exemplified with a two-teethed element, but it may obviously have one or more than two teeth.

1 A self closing valve (1-3, 5-6) for an opening in a container for refuse, where the valve comprises a rocker (1-3) comprising a first and a second blade (1-2) attached to each other with the blades angled from each other, where the rocker in its entirety may be pivoted around a rocker carrier (5), and where the rocker is balanced such that it when unloaded tends towards a position where the first blade (1) seals the opening, characterised in that the second blade is provided with an angle stop (3) that limits the maximum angular movement of the rocker from its unloaded position, and where the angle stop (3) comprises at least one point that stops the angular movement of the rocker at maximum extent.
2 A self closing valve according to claim 1, characterised in that the angle stop (3) during use extends upwards.
3 A self closing valve according to claim 1 or 2, characterised in that the valve is arranged on the underside of a lid and where the angle stop (3) at its furthest reaches the underside of the lid. A self closing valve according to any one of the previous claims, characterised in that the valve is arranged on the underside of the lid of a container for ash.
