Abstract

The invention relates to s valve (4) for an ashtray (1), where the valve comprises an opening and a rocker (7a-b, 10). The valve comprises two blades (9) angled from each other along a fold line. The rocker is suspended around an axis at the fold line, such that it when unloaded positions a first blade (7b) over the opening, while if the first blade is loaded by a weight, the rocker is angled away such that the opening is laid bare. The rocker hangs from its fold line on two studs (9a-b). The rocker comprises a foldable portion (10), which may be folded up and expose a recess, such that the rocker may be slipped onto the studs. If the rocker is made from a flat piece of substance the rocker with the foldable portion may be produced in a single production step before being folded. In one embodiment of the invention, the valve is provided with a pipe (6a-b), where one end of the pipe constitutes the opening. Typically, the end of the pipe that constitutes the opening is cut off at an angle.

Description

A valve for an ashtray
The present invention relates to a valve for an ashtray according to the introductory portion of the independent claim.
In particular, it relates to such a valve for an ashtray comprising a rocker. Background of the invention
Valves for ashtrays are well known and are intended to close the ashtray such that smoke form the interior of the ashtray does not leak out into the surroundings. Valves typically comprise a large number of components made with a high degree of precision and require several sensitive assembly steps. Each assembly and production step increases the cost of the valve, so it is desirable with a simpler valve type than common types of ashtray valves.
An object of the invention is therefore to provide a valve for an ashtray that is simple to manufacture and install.
These and other objects are attained by a valve for an ashtray according to the characterising portion of the independent claim.
Summary of the invention
The invention relates to s valve 4 for an ashtray 1 , where the valve comprises an opening and a rocker 7a-b, 10. The valve comprises two essentially flat blades 9 angled from each other along a fold line. The rocker is suspended around an axis at the fold line, such that it when unloaded positions a first blade 7b over the opening, while if the first blade is loaded by a weight, the rocker is angled away such that the opening is laid bare. The rocker hangs from its fold line on two studs 9a-b. The rocker comprises a foldable portion 10, which may be folded up and advantageously expose a recess, such that the rocker may be slipped onto the studs. This is particularly advantageous if the rocker is made from a flat piece of substance since then the rocker with the foldable portion may be produced in a single production step before being folded.
In one embodiment of the invention, the valve is provided with a pipe 6a-b, where one end of the pipe constitutes the opening. Typically, the end of the pipe that constitutes the opening is cut off at an angle.
Brief description of the drawings
Fig. 1 shows an ashtray of the kind that uses a valve according to the invention Fig. 2 shows a valve according to the invention seen from the side Fig. 3 shows a valve according to the invention seen from below
Fig. 4 shows a rocker for a valve according to the invention with the rocker in a closed position Fig. 5 shows a rocker for a valve according to the invention with the rocker in an open position Description of a preferred embodiment
Fig. 1 shows an ashtray 1 of the kind that uses a valve according to the invention. The ashtray consists of a cylindrical container 2 that contains cigarette butts and ash. On the top of the ashtray a funnel shaped part 3 is arranged, where cigarette butts are put, which then fall down through a centre hole in the funnel and down into the cylindrical container. It is important that the hole normally is closed, such that smoke from the interior of the container does not leak out into the surroundings, and therefore a valve according to the invention is provided under the hole.
Fig. 2 shows a valve 4 according to the invention seen from the side. The valve has a flat, circular top portion 5 and a pipe 6a, b that extends through the top portion and extends above and below the top portion. The part of the pipe 6a that extends upwards fits the hole in the funnel 3.
The part of the pipe 6b that extends downwards is cut off at an angle, such that it forms an elliptical opening. In the valve, a rocker 7a-b hangs that comprises two approximately elliptical blades, which are angled at a near orthogonal angle with respect to each other. One blade 7a normally rests against the elliptical opening and keeps it closed. The rocker is suspended such that it may be pivoted around an axis 8, but the other blade is heavier than the first one and normally forces the rocker to a position where the first blade seals the pipe mouth. The rocker is suspended in such a way that, as soon as a cigarette butt falls onto the first blade of the rocker, it is weighed down and the rocker opens, such that the butt may fall through. As soon as the butt has fallen down, the weight of the second blade makes the rocker reseal the pipe.
Fig. 3 shows a valve according to the invention seen from below. The upper circular portion 5 of the valve and the elliptical opening of the pipe 6b is facing the observer. Both blades 7a-b of the rocker are clearly illustrated, but here is shown in more clearly how the rocker may be pivoted around an axis. The axis is defined by two extending studs 9a-b that extend out into the fold between the two blades, one from each side. The top portion, the pipe, and the studs are typically cast in hard polymer or metal, so it would normally have been difficult to insert the rocker under the studs, but this is solved with a clever feature described below.
Fig. 4 shows the rocker for the valve with the rocker in a closed position, which is the position the rocker normally is in when installed into the valve. The rocker then forms two flat blades 7a- b orthogonally angled from each other from a folding line. Two small recesses are arranged near the folding line, which delineates a portion 10 that may be folded upwards. With the foldable portion 10 aligned along the blade 7b, it is not possible to insert the rocker under the studs 9a-b of the valve.
Fig. 5 shows the rocker for the valve according to the invention with the rocker in an open position, such that the foldable portion 10 has been orthogonally folded out from the blade 7b. The foldable portion then exposes a recess in the blade, and the rocker may the be inserted under the studs such that one stud passes through the recess. When the rocker has been positioned, the foldable portion is folded back into a position such that it is aligned with the blade and the rocker can then no longer leave the valve.
There are other conceivable ways of making it possible for the rocker to be fitted under the studs, but the foldable portion may be produced in the same production step as the rest of the rocker, when it is punched out of a metal sheet. This makes the insertion detail particularly
advantageous.
