Description

    WASHING MACHINE WITH IMPROVED SAFETY
  • The present invention relates to a washing machine. The present invention more particularly relates to a washing machine in which the door assembly has a glass element.
  • The door assembly of a conventional laundry washing machine is commonly provided on a front side thereof so as to enable access to the clothes drum. The door assembly of a conventional washing machine usually comprises a transparent pot-shaped glass element. By virtue of the glass element, the user can view an interior of the clothes drum and occasionally follow the washing course during an operation of the conventional washing machine.
  • During the washing coarse an increased mechanical load acts on the door assembly due to the rotation of the clothes drum and the clothes therein. Therefore, the glass element of the door assembly is manufactured so as to withstand excessive mechanical loads to prevent it from breaking, in particular from exploding. Nevertheless, from time to time it happens that a glass element of a conventional washing machine breaks during the washing course. The breakage of the glass element during the washing course causes damages to the user’s articles and poses a number of risks including the possibility electric shock, fire, injuries, skin burns and the like.
  • Several factors may influence the breakage of the glass element. In general, the breakage of the glass element is due to manufacturing errors. Therefore, it is of utmost importance that such manufacturing errors are minimized. However, the breakage of the glass element may also be due to scratches which have been formed on its inner (rear) surface during use.
  • An objective of the present invention is to provide a washing machine which overcomes the aforementioned drawbacks of the prior art in a cost-effective way and which has an improved the safety.
  • This objective has been achieved by the washing machine as defined in claim 1. Further achievements have been attained by the subject-matters respectively defined in the dependent claims.

  • In an embodiment, the electrically conductive element comprises one or more than one of an electrically conductive paint, an electrically conductive film, and an electrically conductive wire. Herein the electrically conductive element is rendered suffiently weak so as to rupture in case of a breakage of the glass element.
  • In another embodiment, the electrically conductive element is formed on a surface of the glass element. In version of this embodiment, the electrically conductive element is formed on a front surface of a flange of the glass element and/or on a rear surface of the flange of the glass element.
  • In another embodiment, the controller audibly and/or visually alerts the user via a user-interface to the breakage of the glass element.
  • In another embodiment, the controller stops a drum motor when the electrically conductive element is broken.
  • In another embodiment, the controller activates a pump in order to drain wash water when the electrically conductive element is broken.
  • With the washing machine of the present invention, a washing course is immediately terminated in case of a breakage of the glass element so that any damages to the user can be completely eliminated or effectively reduced as much as possible. The present invention is not limited to a washing machine and can also be applied to a washing machine and dryer. With the door assembly of the present invention the safety of the washing machine has been improved in a cost effective way. Most importantly, a customer satisfaction can be further increased.
