Both switching devices have different functions and are generally suitable for connecting or disconnecting electroless or virtually de-energized circuits. Such switching devices are often used as a circuit breaker earthing switch system on the transformer side or as a start-up switch grounding system on the generator side of a high voltage switchgear, which is designed as a generator switch system and then typically operated at rated voltages between a few kV and 70 to 80 kV. However, they can also be used in gas-insulated or outdoor switchgear installations with nominal voltages of up to 1000 kV. The generally single-phase formed switch systems are mechanically interconnected when used in multi-phase high-voltage switchgear coupling rods.
