- the invention has for an object a conveyor for transferring cigarettes or filters or filter plugs, to which reference is hereinafter made without thereby limiting the scope of the invention.
- Drums of the above mentioned type are commonly used, for example, in machines for attaching filter tips to cigarettes and in machines for making filter plugs.
- Each flute on these drums is provided with a plurality of radial holes, each of which has one end facing outside the drum and the other end, positioned inside the drum and, during the period in which a smokers' article must be held in contact with the flute itself, in communication with a chamber which is in turn in communication with a source of suction.
- a first disadvantage lies in the fact that the respective holes of all the flutes which, at any given time, are holding a smokers' article, are connected to the same suction chamber. Under these conditions, if one smokers' article becomes detached from the respective flute for any reason, the holes which previously applied suction to it suddenly come into communication with the outside atmosphere, reducing the suction effect of all the other holes in the flutes which are holding other smoker's articles at that moment, with the possible result that the suction applied through the other holes becomes insufficient to hold the other smokers' articles.
- a further disadvantage lies in the fact that the pneumatic circuits which, internally of the drum, lead to the suction holes are, inevitably, relatively long and large in volume, with the result that the response times for increasing or decreasing the suction applied through the selfsame holes, especially in the event of critical conditions for the machine in which the drum is installed, are relatively long.
- This invention has for aim to provide a conveyor for transferring rod-shaped smokers' articles which wholly or partly overcomes the disadvantages described above with reference to the prior art and which is at once relatively simple and inexpensive to construct.

- the drum 1 is provided, on its cylindrical peripheral surface, with a plurality of elongate flutes 2 which are angularly equispaced and which run parallel to the axis A.
- Each flute 2 is designed to receive and hold within it by suction a smokers' article 3 consisting, for example, of a cigarette or a filter plug.
- Each flute 2 (or row of flutes 2 mutually aligned axially, shown in Figure 1) has, associated with it, a suction means 4 which is preferably interposed between the selfsame flute 2 and the axis A of the drum 1.
- Each suction means 4 is enclosed and coaxially fixed in a respective elongate housing 5 which is formed in the drum 1 parallel to the axis A and whose ends are open and in communication with respective sides of the drum 1 itself. More specifically, preferably, each suction means 4 is interposed between the flute 2 associated therewith and the axis of rotation A of the drum 1.
- Each suction means 4 comprises a Venturi-effect tubular element 6, that is to say, an element which is internally shaped in such a way as to create the Venturi effect.
- the tubular element 6 is open at its two opposite ends and is provided, on its cylindrical peripheral surface, with a plurality of holes 7 (six holes in the example illustrated in Figure 4).
- the tubular element 6 has three portions 14 which are positioned in cascade and in which the Venturi effect is created. Each of the three portions 14 communicates with the outside through two holes 7.
- each tubular element 6 enclosed within a housing 5 is surrounded by a chamber 8 whose volume is as a small as possible, also extending into a portion of the drum 1 without the tubular element 6, and which communicates with the inside of the respective tubular element 6 through the holes 7.
- Each chamber 8 communicates with the outside of the drum 1 only through some tubular ducts or holes 9 of small length and diameter, each of which constitutes a hole having one end giving onto the chamber 8 itself and the other end giving onto a surface of the flute 2 associated with the tubular element 6 surrounded by the selfsame chamber 8.
- Each flute 2 may have one or more holes 9 associated with it, as required.
- each tubular element 6 are, in use, occupied by air at a pressure below atmospheric pressure and communicate, through the holes 7 and the chamber 8, with one end of at least one of the tubular ducts or holes 9.
- each tubular element 6 through which compressed air is fed in is sealedly connected to a valve by means of a fixed sealing ring 13.
- the ring 13 is mounted on a fixed wall 11 placed alongside the drum 1.
- the valve is defined by a slot 10 formed in the wall 11 and communicates ( Figure 3) with a source of compressed air schematically represented as a block 12.
- the slot 10 covers only one angular sector of the drum 1 so it feeds compressed air only in the tubular elements 6 which are in transit in the zone where the smokers' article 3 must be held within respective elongate flutes 2 ( Figure 2).
- the smokers' articles 3 which reach the elongate flutes 2 of the drum 1 are captured by the flutes 2 thanks to the suction applied, on the bottom of the selfsame flutes 2, by the holes 9.
- the suction is created by the delivery of compressed air by the compressed air source 12 to the slot 10. From the slot 10, the air flows into the tubular elements 6 associated with the flutes 2 which must receive the smokers' articles 3, generating negative pressure in the chambers 8 and in the holes 9 associated with those flutes 2.
- each tubular element 6 may be made to flow either into a silenced manifold (not illustrated), or into the atmosphere (after being made to pass through suitable silencers.
- suction means 4 comprising the tubular elements 6 makes it possible to avoid detachment of one smokers' article 3 from the respective flute 2 from having negative effects on the retaining action applied to other smokers' articles 3 in contact with the respective flutes 2.
- the tubular elements 6 in the drum 1 can operate substantially independently of each other although they receive compressed air from a common slot 10 since their operation is not affected by whether or not a smokers' article 3 is present in the flutes 2.
- the zones covered by the air used to hold the smokers' articles 3 within the flutes 2 are self-cleaned.
- the compressed air jets contribute to continuously cleaning the ducts in these zones.
- the conveyor 1 described also fully achieves the preset aims first of all because the pneumatic circuits leading to the holes 9 inside the drum 1 are short and small in volume, with the result that the response times for increasing or decreasing the suction applied through the holes 9 themselves, especially in the event of critical conditions for the machine in which the drum 1 is installed, are extremely short.
- the resulting reduced suction does not affect all the flutes 2 which are holding a smokers' article 3 at that moment, which means that the negative pressure that must be generated by the tubular elements 6 is less than that normally required in prior art conveyors, which in turn means less noise produced by the conveyor 1, lower energy consumption and a reduction in the risk that the suction applied through the holes 9 is insufficient to hold the other smokers' articles 3.
