Description
A DIGITAL BROADCAST RECEIVING DEVICE WHEREIN SOFTWARE UPDATE
IS PERFORMED
[0001] The present invention relates to a digital broadcast receiving device
wherein software updating is performed.
[0002] The software that is used in digital broadcast receiving devices, for
example in devices such as digital settop-box, satellite receiver and television is updated in the course of time due to reasons such as eliminating the problems confronted in the sold products and amendment requests of the broadcast provider, etc. The updating process is performed by saving the up-to-date software that is received from the digital broadcast connected to the product over the current software on the digital broadcast receiving device. In the state of the art, when a software update is sent from the digital broadcast, the updating process is performed on all devices that receive the broadcast and that have the same software and hardware. In this case, performing different updates on devices having the same software and hardware is not possible.
[0003] In the state of the art International Patent Application No WO2009031821 , an embodiment for updating software of an image device that allows a user to set whether to update the software in the situation that software updating is not indispensably required is explained.
[0004] The aim of the present invention is the realization of a digital broadcast receiving device wherein software updating is realized when required.
[0005] The unique identifier that is used in the digital broadcast receiving device realized in order to attain the aim of the present invention, explicated in the first claim and the respective claims thereof, also comprises a distinctive tag which does not depend on technical features. Thus, performing updates, received from the broadcast, in all devices having the same software and hardware is prevented and applying different updates according to the non-technical features such as the seller and the country wherein it is sold can be provided when desired.
[0006] The control unit compares the identifier that is found in the updates coming to the receiving means through the broadcast and the unique identifier
stored in the storage means. If these identifiers match, the software in the storage means is updated in accordance with the update received from the broadcast, and no update is performed if these identifiers do not match. By means of the distinctive tag situated in the unique identifier used in the digital broadcast receiving device of the present invention only the updates intended for this device are provided to be performed.
[0007] The digital broadcast receiving device realized in order to attain the aim of the present invention is illustrated in the attached figures, where:
[0008] Figure 1 - is the schematic view of a digital broadcast receiving device.
[0009] The elements illustrated in the figures are numbered as follows:
1. Digital broadcast receiving device
2. Receiving means
3. Storage means
4. Unique identifier
5. Control unit
[0010] The digital broadcast receiving device (1 ) comprises at least one receiving means (2) which provides the digital broadcast signals to be received, at least one storage means (3) wherein the software is stored, a unique identifier (4) which is stored in the storage means (3) and provides the device (1 ) to be identified during the updating process, and a control unit (5) which provides the software stored in the storage means (3) to be updated in accordance with the update received from the broadcast when the unique identifier (4) and the identifier that is transmitted by means of the update received from the broadcast match.
[001 1] Apart from the data of the manufacturer's name, software version and hardware type, the unique identifier (4) stored in the storage means (3) of the digital broadcast receiving device (1 ) of the present invention also comprises a distinctive tag that does not depend on the technical features of the device (1 ). Thus, when there is a need for determining whether a software update depending on the technical feature will be performed or not in digital broadcast receiving devices (1 ) that differ with respect to their data that do not depend on the technical features, performing the software update only in the desired digital broadcast receiving devices (1 ) is
possible.
[0012] When an update data reaches the receiving means (2) through the
broadcast, the control unit (5) compares the identifier in the update with the unique identifier (4) stored in the storage means (3). In case that the unique identifier (4) stored in the storage means (3) does not match with the identifier in the update, the update is not realized. If the unique identifier (4) stored in the storage means (3) and the identifier in the update match, the control unit (5) decides that the received update is an update compatible with the software version, hardware type and distinctive tag of the digital broadcast receiving device (1 ). In this case, the software stored in the storage means (3) is updated in accordance with the update received from the broadcast.
[0013] In an embodiment of the present invention, the distinctive tag is the seller name data. Thus, in the situations that different models of the same hardware are sold to the customer through different sellers, the updates specific to the seller are provided to be performed only in the related digital broadcast receiving device (1) and are prevented from being performed in all digital broadcast receiving devices (1 ) having the same hardware type. Similarly, in the situation that data of an update is requested only by one seller, the update is provided to be performed only on the digital broadcast receiving devices (1 ) sold through that seller.
[0014] In another embodiment of the present invention, the distinctive tag is the seller name data.
[0015] In another embodiment of the present invention, the distinctive tag is the data of the country wherein the device (1 ) is sold. Thus, in the situations that different models of the same hardware are sold to the customers in
different countries, the updates specific to the standards of the country are provided to be performed only in the related digital broadcast receiving device (1 ) and are prevented from being performed in all digital broadcast receiving devices (1 ) having the same hardware type.
[0016] By means of the present invention, it is possible to use the same hardware and software in the products sent to different sellers. Because, by means of the distinctive tag inside the unique identifier (4), it is possible to perform different updates in the digital broadcast receiving devices (1 ) having a feature that is not a different technique although having the same software and hardware.
[0017] The unique identifier (4) used in the digital broadcast receiving device (1 ) of the present invention eliminates the need of creating hardware and software specific to each seller, to whom sale is made, for the original equipment manufacturers (OEM) that make sales to many sellers particularly in various countries having different standards and broadcast types. In digital broadcast receiving devices (1 ) wherein the same software version is installed, different updates can be performed by taking into consideration the data such as the seller or the country wherein the device (1 ) is sold contained by the distinctive tag in the used unique identifier (4).
[0018] It is to be understood that the present invention is not limited by the
embodiments disclosed above and a person skilled in the art can easily introduce different embodiments. These should be considered within the scope of the protection postulated by the claims of the present invention.
