Description

Description
A WASHING MACHINE COMPRISING A SOFTENING UNIT
[0001] The present invention relates to washing machines wherein water
softening process is performed.
[0002] In a washing machine, a washing program is implemented that consists of various steps such as pre-washing, main washing and rinsing. In washing machines, the washing and/or drying performance is inversely proportional to the hardness degree of water. As is known, the hardness of water results from the positive calcium and magnesium ions (Ca++ and Mg++) dissolved therein. The softening unit having an ion exchanger is used in order to decrease the hardness of water. The water used in washing is first passed over the ion exchanger, for example, resin. The ion exchanger absorbs these ions from the water and gives off sodium ions (Na+) instead. Consequently, the hardness of water is decreased. However, in the course of time, the ion exchanger becomes unable to absorb the calcium and magnesium ions. Therefore, the calcium and magnesium ions are provided to be removed and to be enriched with sodium ions again by keeping the ion exchanger in a salt solution (for example NaCI) or by the capacitive deionization method. This process is called regeneration. It is important to make the regeneration process properly so that the ion exchanger can soften the water. Sensors are used in the technique for performing the regeneration process in the correct frequency.
[0003] In the state of the art German Patent Application No. DE19841568, a
washer is explained that comprises an electrical conductivity sensor which measures the electrical conductivity of water both before and after water is passed through the ion exchanger. The decision for regeneration is given by registering and comparing the difference with previous values of conductivity from earlier treatment cycles detected by the two sensors. If the said difference is below a certain threshold value then it is understood that the ion exchanger is not functioning properly and regeneration is performed.
[0004] In another implementation known in the technique, the state of the art
European Patent Application No. EP1252855, the explained washer comprises a conductivity sensor that measures the conductivity of the ion exchanger. When to perform the regeneration process is determined in accordance with the measured value.
[0005] However, in these implementations known in the technique, in the case data cannot be received from the sensor for determining when to perform regeneration for a reason such as malfunctioning of the said sensors or detachment of the electrical connections, the regeneration process cannot be performed at all and the washing performance of the machine gradually decreases.
[0006] The aim of the present invention is the realization of a washing machine wherein effective washing is performed even in the case the water softening process cannot be performed.
[0007] In the washing machine realized in order to attain the aim of the present invention, explicated in the first claim and the respective claims thereof, the water softening unit, providing to decrease hardness of water, comprises an ion exchanger, a regeneration unit and a sensor that detects whether or not the regeneration unit is functioning. Work data of the water softening unit is transmitted to the control unit that regulates the washing program.
[0008] When the control unit detects an error in the regeneration unit or in the sensor during the washing performed with the parameters selected by the user, the control unit readjusts the washing parameters so that decrease in the washing effectiveness is prevented.
[0009] In an embodiment of the present invention, the water temperature selected by the user is increased by the control unit so that the laundry is cleaned effectively which is washed with un-softened water resulting from the softening unit not functioning due to depletion of ions providing
regeneration in the regeneration unit or the sensor not being able to transmit data as a result of an electrical malfunction.
[0010] In another embodiment of the present invention, when the water softening unit is detected not being able to function, the control unit prolongs the duration of the washing process by readjusting the program duration selected by the user. Consequently, even though the water cannot be softened due to the occurring error, the cleaning performance is prevented from decreasing by performing the washing for a longer period of time.
[001 1] In another embodiment of the present invention, the drum rotates at a
certain speed during washing according to the selected washing program. In this embodiment, when error is detected in the softening unit, the control unit increases the decreased washing effectiveness resulting from water not being softened by increasing the rotation speed by a predetermined amount.
[0012] In another embodiment of the present invention, when the softening unit is detected not to function properly, the control unit prolongs the rotation duration and shortens the stopping duration of the drum which rotates for a certain time and stops for a certain time under normal conditions.
Consequently, the laundry is provided to be cleaned better by being agitated more.
[0013] In another embodiment of the present invention, the control unit continues the washing process with the changed parameters however delivers a warning to the user when the softening unit is detected not to function properly.
[0014] By means of the embodiment of the present invention, the control unit changes the washing parameters thus preventing the washing
performance from being adversely affected when an error is detected that prevents the softening unit from functioning properly.
[0015] A washing machine realized in order to attain the aim of the present
invention is illustrated in the attached figures, where:
[0016] Figure 1 - is the schematic view of a washing machine.
[0017] The elements illustrated in the figures are numbered as follows:
1. Washing machine
2. Drum
3. Softening unit
4. Ion exchanger
5. Regeneration unit
6. Sensor
7. Control unit [0018] The washing machine (1 ) provides cleaning of the laundry in accordance with a washing program that includes at least some of the various steps like pre-washing, main washing, rinsing, and spin-drying. The washing programs are performed in accordance with the parameters like washing temperature and washing duration selected by the user.
[0019] The washing machine (1 ) comprises a drum (2) wherein the laundry to be washed is placed, a softening unit (3) having an ion exchanger (4) providing the water to be delivered to the drum (2) to be softened, a regeneration unit (5) that provides regeneration process of the ions to be performed when the ions in the ion exchanger (4) are decreased, and a sensor (6) that detects when the ion exchanger (4) becomes unable to absorb the ions contained in the water passing therethrough (Figure 1 ).
[0020] In the washing machine (1 ), the ion exchanger (4) becomes unable to
absorb the ions contained in the water passing therethrough anymore with the lapse of time. Therefore, in the ion exchanger (4) the calcium and magnesium ions are provided to be separated from the ions supplied by the regeneration unit (5) and to be enriched with the sodium ions again. This process is called regeneration.
[0021] The washing machine (1 ) comprises a control unit (7) that actuates the regeneration process in accordance with the data received from the sensor (6). Under normal work conditions, the sensor (6), delivers data to the control unit (7) at the start of each washing process about whether or not the regeneration process will be performed.
[0022] The control unit (7) changes the parameters of the washing program
selected by the user when the softening unit (3) is detected to have become unable to function properly. The softening unit (3) becomes unable to function properly in cases when the ions in the regeneration unit (5) are depleted or the connection between the regeneration unit (5) and the ion exchanger (4) is broken or the sensor (6) malfunctions. The control unit (7) regulates the washing parameters such that the washing
effectiveness that will at least be maintained by softened water is provided so that hard water does not decrease the washing effectiveness. Thus, the washing effectiveness obtained by the washing machine (1 ) with softened water and the washing parameters of the program selected by the user is provided with the parameters changed by the control unit (7) when the washing water cannot be softened due malfunctioning of the ion exchanger (4) or the sensor (6).
[0023] In an embodiment of the present invention, when the softening unit (3) becomes unable to function properly, the control unit (7) increases the washing temperature (T1 ) determined while the washing program is selected by the user, by an amount (ΔΤ) predetermined by the producer. For example, if an error is detected while a washing program operates wherein the user has selected the washing temperature (T1 ) for washing medium soiled laundry, the control unit (7) increases the washing temperature to Τ1 +ΔΤ without requiring intervention of the user. Thus, the negative contribution of hard water in washing effectiveness is
compensated by the increased water temperature.
[0024] In another embodiment of the present invention, when the softening unit (3) becomes unable to function properly, the control unit (7) prolongs the washing duration (t1) determined while the washing program is selected by the user, by an amount (At) predetermined by the producer. The user selects the washing duration (t1 ) that will be sufficient for effective washing in the case the softening unit (3) can perform adequate softening. The control unit (7) provides the washing duration to be (t1 + At) when the selected washing duration (t1) is inadequate with the water that cannot be softened resulting from the detected error.
[0025] In another embodiment of the present invention, when the softening unit (3) becomes unable to function properly, the control unit (7) increases the rotational speed (V1 ) of the drum (2) during the washing process in the washing program selected by the user, by an amount (AV) predetermined by the producer. Thus, the laundry is cleaned effectively by increasing mechanical motion even though water cannot be softened.
[0026] In yet another embodiment of the present invention, when the softening unit (3) becomes unable to function properly, the control unit (7) increases the rotation duration (tr) of the drum (2) in the washing step of the washing program selected by the user by a duration (Ata) predetermined by the producer which is recorded in memory and decreases the stop times (ts) by the same duration (Ata). Consequently, the decrease in washing effectiveness resulting from hardness of water is compensated by increasing mechanical movements of the laundry in the drum (2) without making a change in the total washing duration (tr+ts) selected by the user.
[0027] In another embodiment of the present invention, the control unit (7) gives a warning to the user informing about the problem when the softening unit (3) is detected to not function properly.
[0028] By means of the present invention, the errors that will prevent the
softening unit (3) from functioning properly like not being able to receive data from the sensor (6) that detects when to perform the regeneration process or depletion of ions in the regeneration unit (5) are detected by the control unit (7). The control unit (7) regulates the washing parameters when error is detected such that at least the washing effectiveness that is provided with the parameters selected by the user in the error-free situation is maintained. Thus, the washing machine (1 ) is provided to perform the washing process effectively without the intervention of the user or the technical maintenance personnel.
[0029] It is to be understood that the present invention is not limited to the
embodiments disclosed above and a person skilled in the art can easily introduce different embodiments. These should be considered within the scope of the protection postulated by the claims of the present invention.
