Abstract

The invention relates to a capsule for preparing a drink, for example coffee, comprising a hollow element (1,1a,1b) for containing a dose, for example of ground coffee. Said hollow element (1,1a,1b) has a lateral wall (2, 2a, 2b), an upper face (3) and a lower face (4), the lower part of said lateral wall (2, 2a, 2b) extending in such a way as to create a rim (6, 3a, 3b) oriented along a plane cutting the lateral wall (2, 2a, 2b). The invention is characterised in that the thickness of the upper face (3) and/or the lateral wall (2, 2a, 2b) and/or the rim (6, 3a, 3b) is variable.

Description

CAPSULE FOR PREPARING A BEVERAGE

Field of the Invention

The present invention is in the field of preparation of beverages, eg coffee, by extracting a concentrated dose, p. ex. ground coffee contained in a capsule. It relates more particularly to the doses used for this purpose as well as devices using such doses.

State of the art

Capsules and machines operating according to the aforementioned principle have existed for many decades.

US Patents 2,899,886, US 2,968,560, US 3,403,617 and US 3,607,297 describe devices in which the capsule is initially perforated in several places, and through which water under pressure.

The capsule disclosed in CH 605 293 or in EP 0242556 B1 comprises a membrane in its lower part. Pressurized water is initially introduced into the upper part of the capsule, causing swelling of the capsule, mainly at the membrane. From a certain pressure, the membrane tears, permitting in this way the flow of a water-coffee mixture.

Other capsules equipped with a membrane are described in the following patent documents: EP 0468079 A, ​​EP 0806373 A, EP 0554469 A.

If the greatest under pressure introduced hot water portion and penetrates through the capsule, another portion flows out therefrom along the outer face of the side wall. In principle, these leakage should not flow beyond the base of the side wall because at this point, the capsule cage is in contact with the rim.

This is unfortunately not the case with the capsules and cages capsules of the prior art. Liquid can thus flow outside the machine and / or mix with the liquid having passed through the interior of the capsule. In the latter case, the quality of coffee is diminished.

There is therefore a need to reduce or eliminate the leakage of liquid flowing over along the outer surface of the side wall of the capsule.

General description of the invention

One objective of the present invention is an improvement in the flow of liquid through the capsule. The invention aims at avoiding that liquid flows along the side wall of the capsule.

By "thickness", it is meant that the element in question, namely the upper face, the side wall or flange has a portion whose thickness is greater than the thickness which constitutes the other part of the element on. It should be noted that this increase in thickness does not result from a fold (double layer) of the side wall. The material of the side wall and the flange is preferably elastic.

Advantageously, it is a biodegradable material.

Several equivalent ways of forming a rim having a greater thickness or an increased thickness are possible and are illustrated as embodiments in the present application. Of course, these are examples that should not be considered as limiting and variations are possible within the framework of this application.

Similarly, by "reduced thickness", it is meant that the element in question, namely the upper face, the side wall or flange has a portion whose thickness is smaller than the thickness which constitutes the other part of the element concerned.

Most often, the presence of a thickening aims to improve the seal while the presence of a reduced thickness intended to weaken the element in question, eg to facilitate drilling.

According to a variant of the invention, the seal between the flange and the bottom of the capsule cage is improved due to softening of the material constituting the capsule. Indeed, when only water flows over the outer face of the wall of the capsule and contact the rim, it softens. The capsule cage can thus deeper into the thickness of the flange. The seal at this point is improved.

Any material that behaves as previously indicated, this is to say that softens can be used in the context of the present invention.

According to another variant of the invention, the capsule comprises a gutter which is intended to be deformed at least partly by the cage when the device is closed.

It should be noted that the invention is not limited to the aforementioned fields of use. One or more thickened portions, respectively one or more sub-layers may be used for other purposes. The presence of thickened portions disposed in the lower portion of the side wall can be used to facilitate centering of the capsule in the capsule cage. Detailed disclosure of the invention

Figure 1 shows a first embodiment of a device and a capsule according to the invention.

Preferably, the upper face of the rim 6 forms an angle less than 90 ° with the side wall, which has the effect of facilitating penetration of the capsule housing in the flange 6.

The plate illustrated in Figures 9 and 10 is made movable while the perforation elements 1 1 There are fixed. The movement of the plate occurs from a certain pressure in the capsule. Below this threshold pressure, the plate member is retained by a, p. ex. tared leaf spring.

The lower edge of the capsule cage illustrated in Figures 16 and 17 has a castellated terrain which is intended to increase the contact surface with the rim of the capsule and to facilitate penetration of the cage in the flange. The seal at this level is improved.

Figures 19 to 32 show various embodiments of thicknesses and sub-layers which are disposed on the flange. particularly some examples it will be noted (see Figures 23,25,29,30) which have recesses on the side of the lower face of the flange. These can eg be used as housing for the insertion of elements that form the base of the capsule such as rings or rigid disks. The hollow design at the rim can also serve to increase its flexibility.

2nd series of examples

Figure 1a shows a capsule 1 according to a first embodiment of the invention after closing the cage 4a, but prior to the entry of hot water.

Figure 2a illustrates the hot water inlet 7a, mainly in the capsule 1 a, but also in the space 6a that lies between the outer face of the side wall 2a of the capsule and the inner surface 4a of the cage .

Figure 3a illustrates the positioning of the cage 4a relative to the flange, after softening of the latter.

Preferably, the softening temperature of said material is greater than room temperature.

The capsule illustrated in Figures 4a to 6a differs from the capsule of Figures 1a to 3a only in that the base of the side wall 2a forms an inclined annular region 9a and on the latter is disposed a bead 8a. The bead 8a is sized so as to reduce (and not deleted) the section of the passage through which the liquid flows. The bead 8a does not therefore constitute a seal but a baffle which has the effect of slowing the amount of liquid which comes into contact with the flange 3a. It has indeed been found that, surprisingly, the slower the amount of liquid contacting the flange 3a improves the seal between the capsule cage 4a and the edge 3a.

According to the invention and as illustrated in the figures, the capsule 1 b includes a side wall 2b and a flange 3b. The cap 1b is arranged on a carrier 6b and is surrounded by a cage 5b. A gutter 4b is arranged in the lower portion of the side wall 2b. The gutter 4b is formed including an edge 6b which is oriented so as to face to the cage portion 5b intended to come into contact with it. In Figures 1 b and 2b the cage is in the open position.

FIG 2b shows an enlargement of Figure 1 b above.

Figures 3b and 4b illustrate the effect of the cage 5b on the gutter 4b during tightening of the cap 1b in its cage 5b.

1. Capsule for the preparation of a beverage, for example coffee, comprising a hollow element (1, 1a, 1 b) for containing a dose, p. ex. ground coffee, said hollow element (1, 1a, 1b) comprising a side wall (2,2a, 2b), an upper face (3) and a lower face (4); said side wall (2,2a, 2b) extending in its lower portion so as to form a flange (6,3A, 3B) oriented along a plane which intersects said side wall (2,2a, 2b), characterized in that the thickness of said upper face (3) and / or said side wall (2,2a, 2b) and / or said flange (6,3A, 3B) is variable.
2. Capsule according to claim wherein said upper face (3) and / or said side wall (2,2a, 2b) and / or said flange (6,3A, 3B) comprises / comprise a thickening.

7. Capsule according to claim 6 wherein the material forming the rim (3a) is adapted to soften in contact with a liquid whose temperature is higher than room temperature.
8. Capsule according to claim 7 comprising a groove (4b) in the lower part of the side wall (2b), the groove (4b) being arranged to ensure contact with the cage (5b) of a device for preparing a beverage.
9. Capsule according to claim 8 wherein the channel (4b) has an edge (7b) oriented so as to face to the cage portion (5b) intended to come into contact with it.
10. Capsule according to one of the preceding claims wherein the lower portion of the side wall (2,2a, 2b) is thicker than the upper part.
