Abstract

The invention relates to a mixing system comprising a disposable container having flexible walls and a mixing device for one-time use. Known mixing systems comprise complex seals of the through opening of the mixer shaft. The novel mixing system aims to solve this problem of cost and safety in an advantageous manner. The mixing system according to the invention consists of at least a disposable container (1) having flexible walls and a mixing device which comprises at least an encapsulated drive (5) and a mixer shaft (3), wherein the drive (5) can be disposed of together with the mixer shaft (3) and the disposable container (1) after use. The mixing system according to the invention is preferably used in biotechnology and in the pharmaceutical industry for the mixing of liquids, the dissolution of solids or the multiplication of cells and microorganisms.

The invention relates to a mixing system with a disposable container with flexible walls and a mixing device for single use, in particular for mixing sterile media or cell cultures.

Flexible-walled disposable containers are increasingly being used in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries to mix liquids, dissolve solids in liquids, or to augment cells and microorganisms. Plastic disposable containers have the advantage that they can already be supplied cleanly and sterile by the supplier, eliminating the need for elaborate cleaning procedures and validations prior to commissioning.

For effective mixing of media in disposable containers with flexible walls for single use are in particular rotating mixer shafts, which are provided with mixing elements such as propellers or vibratory mixer, in which a perforated mixer plate is placed in a linear up and down movement.

One of the biggest problems in this context is to couple a generally non-sterile drive to the sterile mixing shaft in the container interior while maintaining sterility. In a frequently used solution, the magnetic stirrer, for this purpose, the mixing element is equipped with permanent magnets, which are driven by a rotating magnetic field. Another possibility is to guide a mixer shaft, which is mechanically coupled to a drive, through the container wall, wherein the passage opening in the container inner wall has to be laboriously sealed against the passage of contaminants.

The object of the invention is to propose a mixing system in which the drive does not affect the sterility of the container interior of the disposable container. The object is achieved by a mixing system with a drive which is encapsulated and which is disposable after use together with the mixer shaft and the disposable container.

The invention comprises a mixing system composed of a disposable flexible-use disposable container and a mixing device, the mixing device comprising at least one sealed drive disposable after use together with the mixer shaft and the disposable container. The encapsulation is preferably realized by embedding the drive in plastic. This prevents the entry of particles and other impurities. The outlet of the mixer shaft from the capsule is preferably sealed by a seal. In this case, plastic seals, preferably lip seals or molded multi-component injection-molded seals are preferred. Such gaskets are impassable for gases, liquids and microorganisms. The drive can be located both outside the container interior, as well as in the container interior. The invention relates to designs with drives in which the mixer shaft is set either in rotation or in a linear up and down movement. The drive can be either an electric motor or a pneumatically or hydraulically operated drive. Particularly advantageous is a hydraulic or pneumatic drive, because it is exclusively made of plastic, which has advantages for environmentally sound disposal. In a particular embodiment, the motor was sterilized prior to installation by treatment with electromagnetic radiation, by autoclaving or by the action of sterilizing media. In a particular embodiment, the mixing system can be used for mixing media as a bioreactor.
