The lifting section (12) is attached to the blanket section (11) generally centrally thereof, such that the blanket section (11) overlies the lifting section (12).

Description

Patient Carrying Device
This invention relates to a patient carrying device. In particular, it relates to a device combining the functions of a medical blanket and a conventional carrying device, such as a stretcher. The present invention has been developed particularly for use by ambulance services and in accident and emergency departments. It is nevertheless envisaged that the invention may find use in other hospital departments, as well as more broadly in health care, residential care homes, other emergency and rescue services, and in military applications. Patients brought in to hospital by ambulance may be injured, ill, and/or confused. Whilst treatment of the patient is of course paramount, it is also of great importance to the patient that his or her comfort and dignity be maintained at an acceptable level throughout what is likely to be a traumatic ordeal, often including long delays. In the UK, standard practice amongst ambulance crews and other emergency services is to wrap patients in the familiar red medical blanket, which has some merit from the point of view of patients' comfort. However, due to budget constraints, these blankets tend to be used on multiple patients between laundering, and as such are generally unhygienic and present a risk of spreading infection.
With patients who are immobile, the standard procedure for carrying the patient to and from an ambulance is to use a conventional stretcher or gurney. However, the use of these devices is often impractical - for example where a patient requires rescuing from an awkward or inaccessible location. Additionally, these devices are relatively heavyweight and expensive pieces of kit and do nothing to address the above mentioned issues of patient comfort and dignity. The patient must therefore be wrapped in a medical blanket as described above in addition to being placed on the stretcher or gurney. A further issue arises with patients who are neither wholly mobile, and therefore capable of walking to and from an ambulance, nor wholly immobile and therefore in need of carrying to and from an ambulance, but whose condition may vary between these extremes. Conventional carrying devices do not allow for satisfactory levels of comfort and dignity to be maintained for patients falling within this category.
The present invention seeks to provide a combined blanket and carrying device which provides improved standards of hygiene, comfort and dignity to patients, without the need for other apparatus. The invention further seeks to provide such a device which is lightweight, inexpensive, and capable of performing its function for substantially all patients, whether mobile, partially mobile or immobile. According to the present invention there is provided a patient carrying device comprising a blanket section adapted to wrap around a patient's body, and a lifting section attached to the blanket section and having handles to enable manual lifting of said patient.
Preferably: the blanket section and the lifting section are each generally rectangular, when laid flat, each having a pair of opposed sides and a pair of opposed ends; the length of the lifting section is substantially equal to the length of the blanket section, when laid flat; and the lifting section is attached to the blanket section generally centrally thereof, such that the blanket section overlies the lifting section, with each opposed end of the lifting section aligned with an opposed end of the blanket section, when laid flat.
The lifting section preferably attaches to the blanket section over an attachment region defined by a pair of opposed attachment lines arranged parallel to the sides of the lifting section. The handles of the lifting section are preferably arranged externally of the attachment region.
Side portions of the blanket section will extend beyond the attachment lines when the blanket section is laid flat, but are adapted to wrap around a patient's body, when the carrying device is in use.
The attachment region is preferably further defined by a further pair of opposed attachment lines arranged perpendicular to the sides of the lifting section. This enables the formation of flaps at the head and foot end of the carrying device. This in turn enables the carrying device of the present invention comfortably to be used as a blanket for a mobile or partially mobile patient, who may choose either to walk to or from an ambulance with the blanket section wrapped around them, or to be carried in a supine position, again with the blanket section wrapped around them. The lifting section is preferably formed from non-woven polypropylene fabric. Most preferably, the lifting section is further laminated with a layer of polyethylene. The relative thickness of the base non-woven polypropylene fabric material and the polyethylene laminate can be varied according to the tensile and tear strength required. Construction of the lifting section in this way: ensures sufficient strength to support the weight of a patient; further ensures the carrying device is impermeable to moisture - which is crucial in cases where a patient on a carrying device may be left on the ground for any period of time; and further presents a low friction surface to the ground so that the device may be slid along the ground if necessary rather than carried - for example in cases where only a single operative (paramedic, first aid practitioner etc.) is available to effect transportation of a patient.
The blanket section is preferably formed from spunlace material - the term "spunlace" is used herein to refer to any non-woven material manufactured using hydroentanglement (utilising jets of water to entangle fibres) to provide fabric integrity. Preferably, the spunlace material comprises polyester and rayon filament fibre. Most preferably, the spunlace material comprises substantially 70% polyester and substantially 30% rayon filament fibre. The blanket section is preferably further laminated with a layer of polyethylene, to provide the same properties of impermeability as discussed above with reference to the lifting section.
The lifting section may be attached to the blanket section by sewing, adhesive bonding or heat bonding. Preferably, the lifting section is attached to the blanket section by heat bonding, to define attachment lines as hereinbefore described.
The handles of the lifting section are preferably arranged in one or more opposed pairs on the opposed sides of the lifting section. More - A -
preferably, two, three or four pairs of opposed handles are provided at spaced intervals along the opposed sides of the lifting section. Most preferably, the handles are formed as cut-outs in the material of the lifting section. The hygiene and dignity issues associated with conventional medical blankets are addressed by providing the carrying device of the present invention as a patient-specific article. This means that each patient will be issued with a new carrying device at the very start of their treatment, e.g. upon being picked up by an ambulance crew, and will retain that same device with them for the duration of their treatment. At the end of the patient's treatment, e.g. upon a healthy patient being discharged from hospital, the carrying device will be disposed of as clinical waste, rather than being laundered for use on another patient.
In order that the present invention may be more clearly understood, a preferred embodiment thereof will now be described in detail, though only by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows a view of the underside of a patient carrying device according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention, when laid flat;
Figure 2 shows the patient carrying device of Figure 1 in use with an immobile patient in a supine position; and
Figure 3 shows the patient carrying device of Figure 1 in use with a mobile patient in an upright position.
Referring first to Figure 1 , there is shown the underside of a patient carrying device, generally indicated 10, according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention. The device 10 comprises a blanket section 1 1 and a lifting section 12. The blanket section 1 1 , when laid flat as in Figure 1 , is substantially larger in width than the lifting section 12, though their lengths are substantially equal.
The blanket section 1 1 overlies the lifting section 12 and is attached thereto by heat bonding along attachment lines 13 so as to define an attachment region 14 therebetween. When the patient carrying device 10 is laid flat and viewed from beneath, as in Figure 1 , side portions 15 of the blanket section 1 1 extend beyond the attachment lines 13, but will in use be wrapped around the body of a patient (not shown in Figure 1 ) lying substantially over the attachment region 14, as will be described below with reference to Figure 2. Similarly, the lifting section 12 has side portions 16 extending beyond the attachment lines 13, said side portions 16 being formed adjacent the opposed sides 17 of the lifting section 12. The side portions 16 of the lifting section 12 have opposed pairs of handles 18 formed therein as cut-outs in the material of the lifting section 12. In the preferred embodiment shown in Figure 1 , the attachment region
14 is further defined by a further pair of opposed attachment lines 19 arranged perpendicular to the sides 17 of the lifting section 12. These enable the formation of flaps 21 at the head end 22 and foot end 23 of the carrying device 10, which are beneficial when the device 10 is to be used as a blanket for a mobile or partially mobile patient, as will be described below with reference to Figure 3.
Referring now to Figure 2, this shows the patient carrying device 10 of the present invention in use with an immobile patient, generally indicated 30, in a supine position. As can be seen, the patient 30 lies centrally on the carrying device 10, in contact with the upper side 31 of the blanket section 11 - the lower side (not visible) being bonded to the lifting section 12. The side portions 15 of the blanket section 1 1 are then wrapped around the patient 30 to maintain comfort and dignity.
The patient 30 may then be lifted and carried to an ambulance (not shown) by two or more operatives (not shown), such as paramedics, first aid practitioners etc., grasping the handles 18 in the lifting section 12. Alternatively, where there are independent factors which may prevent a patient 30 being lifted - for example, where an insufficient number of operatives is available - the handles 18 may be used to slide the patient 30 along the ground. This option is made possible by the low friction surface presented to the ground by the polyethylene-laminated underside of the lifting section 12. Referring now to Figure 3, this shows the patient carrying device 10 of the present invention in use with a mobile patient 30 in an upright position. As can be seen, the patient 30 is again wrapped in the blanket section 1 1 , with the side portions 15 thereof folded across the patient 30. However, the flaps 21 provided at the head 22 and foot 23 ends of the device 10 may now be folded back to permit the patient 30 comfortably to sit, stand and walk as desired.
The patient carrying device 10 of the present invention is thus particularly useful for patients 30 who are neither wholly mobile nor wholly immobile, but whose condition may be somewhere between these two extremes, and/or may vary during the course of a patient's treatment episode.

Claims

Claims
1. A patient carrying device comprising a blanket section adapted to wrap around a patient's body, and a lifting section attached to the blanket section and having handles to enable manual lifting of the patient.
2. A patient carrying device as claimed in claim 1 , wherein:
- the blanket section and the lifting section are each generally rectangular, when laid flat, each having a pair of opposed sides and a pair of opposed ends;
- the length of the lifting section is substantially equal to the length of the blanket section, when laid flat; and
- the lifting section is attached to the blanket section generally centrally thereof, such that the blanket section overlies the lifting section, with each opposed end of the lifting section aligned with an opposed end of the blanket section, when laid flat.
3. A patient carrying device as claimed in claim 2, wherein the lifting section attaches to the blanket section over an attachment region defined by a pair of opposed attachment lines arranged parallel to the sides of the lifting section.
4. A patient carrying device as claimed in claim 3, wherein the handles of the lifting section are arranged externally of the attachment region.
5. A patient carrying device as claimed in claim 3 or claim 4, wherein portions of the blanket section extend beyond the attachment region when the blanket section is laid flat, but are adapted in use to wrap around a patient's body.
6. A patient carrying device as claimed in any of claims 3 to 5, wherein the attachment region is further defined by a further pair of opposed attachment lines arranged perpendicular to the sides of the lifting section.
7. A patient carrying device as claimed in any of the preceding claims, wherein the lifting section is formed from non-woven polypropylene fabric.
8. A patient carrying device as claimed in claim 7, wherein the lifting section is further laminated with a layer of polyethylene.
9. A patient carrying device as claimed in any of the preceding claims, wherein the blanket section is formed from spunlace material.
10. A patient carrying device as claimed in claim 9 wherein the spunlace material comprises polyester and rayon filament fibre.
11. A patient carrying device as claimed in claim 10 wherein the spunlace material comprises substantially 70% polyester and substantially 30% rayon filament fibre.
12. A patient carrying device as claimed in any of claims 9 to 1 1 , wherein the blanket section is further laminated with a layer of polyethylene.
13. A patient carrying device as claimed in any of the preceding claims, wherein the lifting section is attached to the blanket section by sewing, adhesive bonding or heat bonding.
14. A patient carrying device as claimed in claim 2, or any claim dependent thereon, wherein one or more opposed pairs of handles are provided on the opposed sides of the lifting section.
15. A patient carrying device as claimed in claim 14, wherein two, three or four pairs of opposed handles are provided at spaced intervals along the opposed sides of the lifting section.
16. A patient carrying device as claimed in any of the preceding claims, wherein the handles are formed as cut-outs in the material of the lifting section.
