Definitions
- the present invention relates to a bay window in a building, equipped with several windows with one or two parallel glass plates sliding in said bay and a suspension structure of said glazing partially incorporated into a frame member forming the upper horizontal side of the bay and comprising guide means related to the glazing.
- a bay window according to the preamble of claim 1 is known from the French publication FR 1 013 865 A .
- the present invention aims to provide, for the windows of buildings, a constructive concept that differs both traditional construction methods and proposals including industrial products mass production, while offering a drastic reduction in heat losses. For this, it uses bonded assemblies and materials with low heat transfer coefficient, including wood.
- the bay represented at Fig. 1 comprises two sections 1 and 2 each equipped with two windows 3 and 4, each consisting, as will be seen below, of two glass plates 5 and 6 ( Fig. 2 ).
- a suspension structure 7 allowing a sliding of the glazings 3 and 4 along two parallel tracks, one for the glazing 3 and the other for the glazing 4.
- the suspension structure 7 comprises elements integrated in the upper frame of the bay, and elements forming part of the glazing structure.
- the number of sections of the bay is not limited to two. It could be higher, or the bay might have only one section.
- a dormant frame member 8 which will be discussed later and which guides the glazing 3 and 4 independently of one another by protecting them from any constraints they may suffer.
- the suspension structure 7 is shown in cross-section at the Fig. 2 and in longitudinal section at the Fig. 3 . It comprises in the first place a concrete slab 9 or other construction material, forming part of the facade of the building. An armature consisting of a steel plate 10 is embedded in this slab. A series of tubular steel brackets 11, with quadrangular profile, connected in pairs and closed at one end by a 11a, are fixed at a distance distance to the steel plate 10 by sealing bolts 12 penetrating into the concrete slab 9. Under each of the tubular brackets 11 are screwed three angles 13 in the vertical flanks from which are driven axes 14 bearing ball castors 15. As can be seen in Fig.
- each tubular bracket 11 the vertical flank of the bracket 13 located in the middle of the alignment carried by each tubular bracket 11 is equipped with two fixed axes 14 coaxial and carries two casters 15 on either side of this vertical element.
- a layer of thermal insulation 16 covers the outer face of the concrete slab 9 by embedding the tubular consoles 11, and a woodworking plate 17, cut at the desired locations, is applied against the underside of the thermal insulation 16 .
- Glazing 3 and 4 are suspended on the casters 15 so that they can slide at will, the glazing 3 on one track and the glazing 4 on the other. They each comprise two glass plates 5 and 6, the one on the outside of the building will be thicker than the other. The two plates of each glazing are connected by an intermediate section 18 of continuous flexible material disposed along the four edges of the glass plates 5 and 6 and glued against the inner faces of each of the plates. This profile may be neoprene having the desired elasticity, or other elastomer, glued by a thin layer adhesive. The space between the glass plates 5 and 6 can be filled with an insulating gas or kept under vacuum.
- Two flat steel profiles 19 are glued by a thin-layer adhesive along the upper edges of the glass plates 5 and 6 on their outside face to the glazing, so that, when they are mounted, they rest on the rollers 15.
- neoprene gaskets or brush seals 20 in contact with the upper edge of each of the glass plates 5 and 6 are glued to the frame, here more precisely to the wood panel 17.
- the vertical edges of the glazing may be bare according to the Fig. 3 or garnished neoprene joints, or even equipped with wooden uprights, as will be seen later.
- Fig. 4 The arrangement of the lower edges of the windows and the sill of the bay is shown in Fig. 4 for the embodiment shown as an example.
- an insulation mantle 22 In front of a slab 21 located under the concrete slab 9 under the described bay is placed an insulation mantle 22 in a similar way to the thermal insulation 16, which surmounts a threshold 23 of hardwood resistant to the weather and good dimensional stability, by example in oak.
- This piece of wood will be prepared in carpentry to the profile that shows the Fig. 4 .
- Two outer flanges 24 and an intermediate flange 25 cut in the upper face of the threshold 23 will guide between them the lower edges of the glazings 3 and 4, these flanges being lined with seals or neoprene seals 35 provided with brushes glued to the wood.
- Evacuation holes for water or other detritus are drilled obliquely from distance to distance in the threshold plank 23.
- a concrete lining or paving 26 is further provided to extend downward, outside the facade, the threshold 23
- the figs 5 , 6 and 9 illustrate an example of arrangement of the vertical edges of glazing 3 and 4.
- Wooden slat elements 27 and 28 are fixed by glued joints 42 and 43 against the vertical edges of the two glazings 3 and 4.
- the elements of wooden laths 27 and 28 have notches 29 and 30.
- these wooden laths 27 and 28 are equipped with Brush seals 34 which slide against the underside of the joinery wood plate 17. They are further equipped with brush seals 44 in their faces facing one another.
- the figs 7 to 11 show in section through horizontal planes various variants of auxiliary arrangements compatible with the described construction.
- a glazing such as 3 placed in a final position with respect to the bay.
- the latter is equipped, at its end, with a fixed upright 36, for example made of wood lined with rubber or other elastomer seals against which abutting homologous joints 38 bonded as already indicated against the vertical slice of plates 5 and 6.
- a fixed upright 36 for example made of wood lined with rubber or other elastomer seals against which abutting homologous joints 38 bonded as already indicated against the vertical slice of plates 5 and 6.
- an intermediate wooden upright 39 is placed between the woodworking panel 17 of the suspension structure and the threshold 23 of the bay. Placed in the center of it, it allows glazing 4, according to the assembly of the Fig. 1 , to mark their final position.
- a glazing unit 3 and the following glazing unit 4 can be fixed against the vertical slices glazing, as shown in Fig. 9 , the elements of wooden slats 27 and 28, for example, fixed by glued joints 42, 43 and lined in their faces opposite brush seals 44.
- the functions of these auxiliary elements are clear and do not require other explanations.
- figs 10 and 11 show how, with the same layout as in the Fig. 9 movable uprights 45, 46, or 47, 48, fixed against the vertical slices of glazing placed in lateral offset, can be locked, according to the Fig. 10 by a hand lock 49 and, according to the Fig. 11 , by frictional engagement of a lug 50 in a housing 51, so as to ensure the positions of the windows and secure the bay even in case of adverse weather conditions, such as wind or precipitation.
- the current characteristics of glass, glue, and joinery or construction woods show that the arrangement of bay windows described above is perfectly reliable. It has the advantage of great simplicity, ease of manufacture without requiring the production of industrial elements. Its weight is reduced and it will be noted finally that the presented solution avoids to a large extent thermal bridges through metallic elements, which greatly improves the conditions of winter heating and participates in the economy of the energy.
- the insulating efficiency of the glazing according to the present invention is essentially determined by the fact that there is only one gap in the continuity of the insulating envelope (double insulating glass - gap - frame fixed insulation of the facade ), while the windows of the state of the art have at least two gaps (double insulating glass - gap - sliding frame - gap - dormant frame insulation facade).

The current characteristics of glass, glue, and joinery or construction woods show that the arrangement of bay windows described above is perfectly reliable. The insulating efficiency of the glazing according to the present invention is essentially determined by the fact that there is only one gap in the continuity of the insulating envelope (double insulating glass - gap - frame fixed insulation of the facade ), while the windows of the state of the art have at least two gaps (double insulating glass - gap - sliding frame - gap - dormant frame insulation facade).
In the embodiment described above, the glazings comprise two parallel glass plates 5, 6. The double glazings that are commercially available can advantageously be used. Of course, this The invention also relates to windows equipped with single-glass windows.
