Abstract

The invention relates to a method of managing at least one representation of a user in a virtual environment. According to the invention, such a method includes a step of adapting the representation of a given user which is intended to be replayed to at least one other user, which adaptation being executed as a function of at least one comparison between at least one characteristic specific to the given user and at least one characteristic sought by said other user. The adaption step is executed for each of the representations of the set of users.

1. Field of the Invention

The present invention relates to computer management of virtual environments, such as "virtual worlds," allowing such users to meet virtually, via their respective terminals. More specifically, the invention relates to the management of user representations, the latter being represented by avatars evolving in these virtual environments. In the remainder of this document we will use interchangeably the notions of environments or virtual worlds, without this having any influence on the understanding of the invention.

A virtual environment can be seen as a representation of a particular universe in which users of the real world are present in the form of avatars. An avatar is a representation, using a set of parameters from a user. Such a representation may be in the form of an image or an animated object.

Thus, in a virtual environment called "immersive", such representation is usually the result of calculations, sometimes complex, made from various parameters specific to a user. Such representation may be in two or three dimensions and evolve in real time as well based on parameters and / or actions performed by the user in the virtual environment as a function of actions performed by others users (or their avatars) evolving within a virtual environment. A virtual environment is called "immersive" when the user is immersed in it through a performance space and users, for example in three dimensions. This is called user immersion.

2. BACKGROUND In a virtual environment, meetings between avatars allow users represented by these avatars to exchange them.

Typically, a user selects a first step to meet another user based on the visual appearance of the avatar of the latter, and secondly on the basis of the characteristics defined by the user and not visually represented through his avatar.

The visual appearance of an avatar is chosen by the user it represents, its "owner" and can result in a performance taking into account criteria such as height, eye color, hair style clothing etc. The visual appearance of an avatar can also be supplemented with graphic indicators characteristics of the user, such as a basketball, bike, any attribute for representing one or more characteristics of the user.

A disadvantage of this way of representing an avatar is the fact that only the owners of the avatars who choose the look of their avatars. Thus, the visual appearance of each avatar depends on the repository of its owner, reference may be different from those of other users (for example, a user may choose a measuring LM70 great avatar, while another user, LM70 is not large). Another disadvantage of this technique of the prior art is that in an environment where change many avatars, it becomes difficult to meet people based solely on the physical appearance of avatars.

3. Summary of the Invention

The invention proposes a new solution that does not have all these disadvantages of the prior art, as a user process management representations in at least one virtual environment.

Thus, the invention relies on a novel and inventive approach to the representation of users in a virtual environment, optimized and personalized for each user on his terminal. According to one embodiment of the invention, said adapting step is performed for each of the representations of all users.

The method of the invention uses, for a given user, the features defined by the latter, representative for some of the user itself (characteristics), and for others, representative of desired characteristics with other users by the given user.

For a given user, more consistent information is obtained for each of the other users of the environment, or just for users in the field of view of the given user.

These concordance information is obtained by comparing the desired characteristics of the given user with the characteristics of each of the others and seen by comparing the characteristics of the given user with the desired characteristics of other users considered.

Thus are obtained for a given user, a first match of whether a user is considered that the given user search, and a second matching information indicating whether the given user matches what this research even considered user .

These concordance information is managed in a memory associated with each of the representations of users or, overall, to the virtual environment in which users' representations.

This information is for example stored and updated in one or more databases.

Alternatively, the adjustment of the representation of a user is performed dynamically and does not require storing the corresponding information.

According to a particular characteristic of the invention, said comparing steps implement a calculation of a distance between the specific characteristics of a given user and the corresponding features that own another user.

Thus, the method according to the invention performs a calculation of a semantic distance between two characteristics to determine if they are identical or not.

Overall, clean and desirable characteristics are chosen by users from a list of predefined characteristics in a virtual environment the management entity. Comparison between two characteristics can therefore consist of a strict comparison between two strings, or a weighted comparison, which allows to consider the characteristics as non-identical, but close (for example, when comparing a characteristic indicating a size, one can consider the strict equality between sizes or equal ± 5 cm).

The general principle of the invention relies on the management of cross-match information between different representations of users in an immersive virtual environment providing users with opportunities to meet them. 5.3.2 Example environment displayed by a user will now be described in relation to Figure 5, an exemplary environment previewed by the user U according to the embodiment described above, resulting from the update of the RCL as described above.

The user U thus sees in his vision the avatars of users Ul, U2 and A.

These avatars, besides their visual appearance selected by their respective users, each have a distinctive sign, as described above.

In Figure 5, the green color is represented by diagonal stripes, the color orange is represented by dots, and the yellow color by a grid. The avatar of the user U2 is shown with a striped oval shape and the avatar of the user Ul with an oval with dashed lines.

The user's avatar A is represented with an indication of unavailability. The user U can also see the bottom left in its environment, the total number of avatars respectively having a sphere green, orange and yellow, in the environment in which is located the user U.

This information may be restricted to the field of view of the user U, or in one or more regions of the virtual environment close to where is now the user U (case shown in the figure). This information may also relates to the virtual environment full.

Thus, these indications may indicate the number of "green" users within 100m around the location of the user U, so as to indicate which areas it can lead privileged way to try to meet other users corresponding to it.

5.4 Structure of the management entity

finally presented in relation with Figure 6, the simplified structure of a management entity in the particular embodiment described above.

Such management entity comprises a memory 60 constituted by a buffer memory, a processing unit 61, equipped for example with a microprocessor .mu.P and driven by the computer program 62, implementing the management method according to the 'invention.

At initialization, the computer program code instructions 62 are for example loaded into a RAM memory before being executed by the processor of the processing unit 61. The processing unit 61 receives as input characteristics own set of users and desired characteristics of a set of users. The microprocessor of the processing unit 61 implements the steps of the management method described above according to the instructions of the computer program 62, for performing cross comparison between the characteristics and the features and update a table matching stored for example in the memory 60. for this, the management entity comprises, in addition to buffer memory 60, comparing means at least one of said characteristics searched by said given user with at least one corresponding own characteristic at least one other user, issuing a first information match, comparison means of at least one of said characteristics of said given user with at least one corresponding desired characteristic of at least one other user, issuing a second registration information , updating means in a memory associated e to said environment and / or at least one of said representations, at least one basic information of corresponding data based on said first and second information match, and means for adapting the representation associated with the at least one other user and intended to be rendered on a terminal of said given user, based on information stored in said database. These means are controlled by the microprocessor of the processing unit 61.

Claims

1. A method of managing at least one representation of a user in a virtual environment, characterized in that it includes a step of adapting the representation of a given user which is intended to be rendered at least another user, which adaptation being performed as a function of at least one comparison between at least one characteristic specific to said particular user and at least one desired characteristic by said another user.
2. A management method according to claim 1, characterized in that said matching step is performed for each of the representations of all users.
3. A management method according to any one of claims 1 and 2, characterized in that said matching step comprises the substeps of: comparing at least one of said characteristics of said given user with at least one desired characteristic corresponding said another user, providing a first match information; comparing at least one of said characteristics searched by said given user with at least one corresponding characteristic specific to said other user, delivering a corresponding second information; updating to, in an environment associated with said memory and / or at least one of said representations of at least one base corresponding information data, based on said first and second registration information; changing the appearance of the representation associated with said given user and intended to be rendered on a terminal of said another user, based on information stored in said database.
4. A method according to claim 3, characterized in that said sub-steps of comparing implement a calculation of a distance between own characteristics of a given user and the corresponding features that own another user.
5. A method according to any one of claims 3 and 4, characterized in that said appearance changing step implements a first type of modification if said first and second registration information is less than a predetermined threshold.
6. A method according to any one of claims 3 and 4, characterized in that said appearance changing step implements a second type of modification if said first correlation information is smaller than a predetermined threshold and said second information concordance is greater than said threshold.
7. A method according to any one of claims 3 to 6, characterized in that said appearance changing step implements a third type of modification if said second information match is below a predetermined threshold and said first information concordance is greater than said threshold.
8. A method according to any one of claims 3 to 7, characterized in that said adjustment step associated with the representation of said given user, in the vicinity of the latter, at least one distinctive symbol representative of a degree of matching into account of said first and second correlation information.
9. A method according to any one of claims 3 to 8, characterized in that said matching step changes at least one visual feature of the representation of said given user, based on a degree of agreement taking account of said first and second matching information.
10. A method according to any one of claims 1 to 9, characterized in that 'it comprises a step of displaying, on the terminal of said other user, at least one information representative of the number of other users having a degree of predetermined registration with said another user and whose representation is located in at least a field of view of the representation of said another user.
11. Entity for managing at least a representation of a user in a virtual environment, the entity characterized in that it comprises means for adapting the representation of a given user which is intended to be rendered at least another user, said adjustment means being adapted to perform at least one comparison between at least one characteristic specific to said particular user and at least one desired characteristic by said another user.
12. management entity according to claim 11, characterized in that said matching means comprises: means for comparing at least one of said characteristics of said given user with at least one corresponding desired characteristic of said other user, providing a first corresponding information; - means for comparing at least one of said characteristics searched by said given user with at least one corresponding characteristic specific to said other user, delivering a corresponding second information; updating means in a memory associated to said environment and / or at least one of said representations of at least one base corresponding information data, based on said first and second registration information; means for modifying the appearance of the representation associated with said given user and intended to be rendered on a terminal of said another user, based on information stored in said database.
13. A user terminal connected to an entity of at least one representation of a user in a virtual environment, characterized in that it comprises means for adapting the representation of a given user which is intended to be returned to at least one other user, said adjustment means being adapted to perform at least one comparison between at least one characteristic specific to said particular user and at least one desired characteristic by said another user.
14. Product computer program downloadable from a communications network and / or stored on a computer readable medium and / or executable by a microprocessor, characterized in that it comprises program code instructions for executing the method management system according to at least one of claims 1 to 10 when executed on a computer.
