Description

Description A HOUSEHOLD APPLIANCE
[0001] The present invention relates to a household appliance wherein a UV (ultraviolet) light source is utilized.
[0002] In household appliances, for example in washing machines and dishwashers, UV
(ultraviolet) light source is used for sterilization during washing/drying processes. The UV rays remove microorganisms that are hazardous to human health by reaching those parts of the washed and dried items that are particularly hard to reach and clean. It is known that UV lights have disinfecting properties however are harmful for the eyes and precautions are taken for the user not to be affected by UV light. For example while the UV light that disinfects the detergent dispensers is turned on in washing machines, the electric current delivered to the UV light source is cut off and the light source is turned off when the detergent dispenser lid is opened. Together with the malfunctioning possibility of the electronic or mechanical control mechanisms that energize and de-energize the UV light source, using this type of mechanisms is an expensive solution.
[0003] The explanation is given for washing machines wherein UV light source is used in the state of the art DE4342049, JP2003230790 and JP2006167243 Patent Application Documents, clothes dryer machines wherein UV light source is used in the EP1696071, US5644340 and US6877248 Patent Application Documents, and dishwashers wherein UV light source is used in the DE4442722, EP0599048 and US3915180 Patent Application Documents.
[0004] In state of the art Japanese Patent Document No JP5060459, in a refrigerator, a light source is used for sterilization and also as a defrost heater, the rays emitted from the light source is separated into IR (infrared), UV (ultraviolet) and V (visible) rays by way of the light guides and the light in the visible wavelength is used for the illumination of the indicator on the front panel.
[0005] The aim of the present invention is the realization of a household appliance wherein the user is informed when the UV light source is active without using an additional control mechanism.
[0006] The household appliance realized in order to attain the aim of the present invention is explicated in the claims.
[0007] In the household appliance of the present invention, a UV light source is used for sterilization of the compartments within the body wherein UV rays affect and the user is informed while the light source is on with a UV warning indicator.
[0008] The indicator is disposed on the front side of the household appliance or on the door of the household appliance, anywhere the user can see, and comprises a UV reactive material that emits light in the visible wavelength (activated by ultraviolet light) when the rays emitted from the UV light source in the body affect thereon. [0009] The indicator furthermore comprises a front filter on the user side of the UV reactive material and a rear filter behind on the light source side of the UV reactive material.
[0010] The front filter has the feature of transmitting through rays of the visible wavelength and not transmitting UV rays. Thus the UV reactive light emitter is enabled to be affected by only the UV light received from the light source and not from the UV light in the daylight. Moreover, the front filter enables the light emitter that is reactive with the UV light received from the light source to transmit the emitted light in the visible wavelength to the side of the user.
[0011] The rear filter, unlike the front filter, has the properties of not transmitting visible wavelength rays but transmitting UV rays. The rear filter, transmits the UV rays emitted from the light source to the light emitter, does not transmit the emitted visible light, thus increasing the effectiveness of the UV reactive light emitter.
[0012] In an embodiment of the present invention, the front filter, the UV reactive light emitter and the rear filter forming the indicator are in layers adjacent to each other, arranged in that order from the front towards the rear and disposed on the body or on the door.
[0013] In another embodiment of the present invention, the indicator is configured as an inscription or a symbol like "UV ACTIVE" informing the user that the UV light source is turned on.
[0014] In an embodiment of the present invention, the household appliance is a washing machine wherein laundry or dishes are washed and the user is informed by the indicator when the UV light source is turned on during the washing or drying processes.
[0015] In this embodiment, the UV light affects on components such as the tub or the detergent dispenser and the indicator is disposed on the loading lid covering the tub or on the detergent dispenser lid.
[0016] In this embodiment, a wall is situated between the chamber wherein detergent is put and the detergent dispenser lid with the indicator thereon and a passage is situated on the wall that enables the light emitted from the UV light source to reach the indicator. The passage is covered with a transparent material preventing detergent and water from passing but transmitting UV light or with the rear filter that is used in the indicator.
[0017] The indicator of the present invention informs the user inexpensively and assuredly while the UV light source is turned on without using additional control mechanisms.
[0018] The household appliance realized in order to attain the aim of the present invention is illustrated in the attached figures, where:
[0019] Figure 1 - is the perspective view of a household appliance.
[0020] Figure 2 - is the schematic view of a UV light source and a detergent dispenser.
[0021] Figure 3 - is the schematic view of a UV light source and an indicator.
[0022] Figure 4 - is the exploded view of a UV light source and an indicator. [0023] Figure 5 - is the schematic view of a household appliance while the UV light source is active.
[0024] Elements shown in figures are numbered as follows:
[0025] 1. Household appliance
[0026] 2. Body
[0027] 3. Tub
[0028] 4. Detergent dispenser
[0029] 5, 105. Lid
[0030] 6. Light source
[0031] 7. Light emitter
[0032] 8. Indicator
[0033] 9. Front filter
[0034] 10. Rear filter
[0035] 11. Passage
[0036] The household appliance (1) comprises a body (2) and a UV light source (6) that entirely or partially illuminates the interior of the body (2) and emits UV (ultraviolet) radiation.
[0037] In the embodiment of the present invention, the household appliance (1) comprises an indicator (8) on the front side of the body (2) or on the door, at a position within the sight of the user and having a UV reactive light emitter (7) that emits light of the visible wavelength (V:Visible) when the UV rays emitted by the light source (6) affect thereon.
[0038] When the light source (6) is turned on, the UV reactive light emitter (7) in the indicator (8) emits light in the visible light (V) of a higher wavelength than UV light by absorbing UV light and the visible light (V) is given off outwards from the indicator (8) that is disposed on the front side of the body (2) or the door of the household appliance (1), informing the user that the light source (6) is operating.
[0039] In the embodiment of the present invention, the indicator (8) comprises,
[0040] - a front filter (9) disposed on the side of the light emitter (7) facing the user,
[0041] - that transmits light in the visible wavelength (V),
[0042] - not transmitting the UV light in the daylight (UV proof feature),
[0043] - enabling the light emitter (7) not to be affected by the UV light in daylight and only by the UV light received from the light source (6), and
[0044] - transmits to the side of the user the light emitted in the visible wavelength (V) by the light emitter (7) becoming reactive with the UV light received from the light source
(6) (Figures 3, 4).
[0045] Since there is light in the visible wavelength (V) as well as rays in UV wavelength in daylight, the front filter (9) prevents the UV rays in daylight reaching the light emitter
(7) and emit visible rays (V) thus misleading the user by giving the impression that the light source (6) is turned on even though it is not. [0046] The front filter (9), not allowing UV rays to pass, moreover prevents UV rays that somehow reach from the light source (6) to the front filter (9) from passing and harming the user.
[0047] The indicator (8) furthermore comprises, a rear filter (dark glass filter) (10), disposed on the side of the light emitter (7) facing the light source (6), having UV transmission feature and that transmits UV rays emitted from the light source (6) to the light emitter (7) but not transmitting the visible light (V) emitted from the light source (6) (Figures 3, 4).
[0048] The light source (6) moreover emits rays in the visible wavelength (V) as well as UV rays. Since only UV light is intended to reach the light emitter (7), the passage of visible light (V) should be blocked. The rear filter (10) filters the rays coming from the light source (6) blocking the passage of the visible light (V), allows only UV rays to pass and increases the effectiveness of the UV reactive light emitter (7).
[0049] When the light source (6) is energized, light in the visible wavelengths (V) is also emitted along with UV wavelength light and the rays (UV and V) reach the rear filter (10) on the indicator (8). The rear filter (10) does not transmit the visible light (V) and passes only UV light enabling thereof to reach the light emitter (7). The UV rays are absorbed at the light emitter (7) and visible light (V) is transmitted from the light emitter (7) towards the side of the user. The visible light (V) emitted from the light emitter (7) reaches the front filter (9) and to the side of the user from the front filter (9). Since there is UV wavelength rays in the daylight on the side of the user, by means of the UV proof front filter (9), the exterior UV rays are prevented from reaching the light emitter (7) and the user is informed only when the light source (6) of the household appliance (1) is turned on.
[0050] In an embodiment of the present invention, the front filter (9), the UV reactive light emitter (7) and the rear filter (10) are arranged in layers adjacent to each other, in that order from the front towards the rear and disposed on the body (2) or on the door.
[0051] In an embodiment of the present invention, the indicator (8) is configured as an inscription or a symbol informing the user that the light source (6) is turned on. For example, the indicator (8) is configured as an inscription such as "UV ACTIVE" warning the user when the light source (6) is turned on (Figure 5).
[0052] In an embodiment of the present invention, the household appliance (1) is a washing machine wherein laundry or dishes are washed and the user is informed when the light source (6) is turned on by the indicator (8) during the washing or drying processes.
[0053] In this embodiment, the household appliance (1) comprises a tub (3) wherein washing/drying processes are made, a detergent dispenser (4) for placing the washing agents therein, a loading lid (5) covering the loading port for loading, unloading the laundry to the tub (3) and a detergent dispenser lid (105) openable for putting detergent therein by the user and covering the side of the detergent dispenser (4) facing the user.
[0054] The light source (6) illuminates completely or partially the interior of the detergent dispenser (4) or the tub (3) and the indicator (8) is disposed on the lid (5 or 105) that covers the compartments such as the tub (3) or the detergent dispenser (4).
[0055] When the light source (6) is energized, the visible light (V) emitted from the UV reactive light emitter (7) situated inside the indicator (8) is transmitted outside from the indicator (8) situated on the lids (5 or 105), informing the user that the light source (6) is operating.
[0056] In another embodiment of the present invention, the household appliance (1) comprises one or more passages (11) on the wall (D) situated between the partition (B) of the detergent dispenser (4) wherein detergent is put and the detergent dispenser lid (105) with the indicator (8) disposed thereon, providing the light emitted from the light source (6) to reach the indicator (8) (Figure 2). Moreover, light guides can be used to facilitate the light emitted from the light source (6) to reach the indicator (8).
[0057] In another embodiment of the present invention, the passage (11) is covered with a transparent material preventing detergent and water from passing but allowing UV light to pass. Consequently, UV light is transmitted from the passage (11) to the indicator (8), preventing detergent and water from passing through the passage (11), reaching and damaging the indicator (8).
[0058] In another embodiment of the present invention, rear filter (10) is disposed on the passage (11). After the rays emitted from the light source (6) are separated at the rear filter (10) disposed in the passage (11), the UV rays pass from the rear filter (10) and reach the UV reactive light emitter (7) in the indicator (8) that is disposed on the detergent dispenser lid (105) (Figure X).
[0059] By means of the indicator (8) of the present invention, the user is visually warned not to open the lid (5, 105) while the light source (6) is active without requiring additional mechanical or electronic control mechanisms. In the embodiment of the present invention, informing of the user is guaranteed while the light source (6) is active, there is no possibility of the indicator (8) malfunctioning and not warning the user.
