Description

The present invention relates to a method of mounting a safety line cable on a tensioner and a tensioner adapted to be used for the execution of this method.

The invention is particularly applicable to security installations generally called lifelines or security lines allowing staff to be hired for interventions in perilous conditions. The invention is directed to the establishment of safety lines generally consisting of cables on which people can be hitched so as to avoid accidents during accidental falls.

The safety lines must be connected to each other or connected to fixed elements, including support posts or wall mounts. In this connection, it is common to use tensioners allowing on the one hand a fixation on an external element (such as the wall) and on the other hand the connection of the cable of the safety line. Current tensioners also sometimes comprise a damping element capable of absorbing at least partially part of the energy generated by a possible pull on the cable of the safety line.

The connection of the safety line cable to the tensioner is generally done by crimping said cable inside a sleeve. The cable is firstly cut to length to be received in the sleeve, it is kept in tension preferably at a predetermined value and the crimping operation is carried out.

It is easy to understand that adjusting the length of the cable and maintaining it in tension in this configuration have many practical disadvantages for the emergency personnel. Indeed, these are difficult steps to implement and generally require two or three people. In addition, because it is difficult to precisely adjust the length of cable to be cut, the tension is difficult to adjust.

The publication EP-A1-0 273 673 discloses a lifeline having a device for anchoring and tensioning a cable. The cable is crimped to the device and then turned on.

The present invention overcomes all or part of the disadvantages of the tensioners and assembly methods known until now.

According to the invention, the assembly is made much more convenient insofar as the cable is completely passed through the sleeve so as to exceed, the end of the cable can thus be easily maintained during the crimping operation and the cable length perfectly adjusted before cutting.

The present invention relates to a method of mounting a safety line cable on a tensioner, in which the crimping of a portion of the cable in a sleeve formed on the tensioner. According to the invention, the following operations are carried out:
  • passage of the cable through the sleeve,
  • keeping the cable under tension by its end emerging from the sleeve,
  • crimping the cable in the sleeve.

According to advantageous variants, this mounting method is such that:
  • the end of the cable emerging from the sleeve is cut off,
  • when holding the live cable, the voltage is adjusted to a predetermined value before crimping.

The present invention also relates to a safety line tensioner comprising means for attaching an outer member to one end and a crimping sleeve of a portion of the safety line cable at the other end. According to the invention, this tensioner is such that:
  • the sleeve has a hole opening for the passage of the cable through the sleeve,
  • it comprises an opening configured to allow access from outside the tensioner to the end of the cable emerging from the sleeve so as to ensure its maintenance under tension during crimping of the cable in the sleeve.

This tensioner is preferentially such that:
  • the opening is closable by a shutter,
  • it comprises a channel adapted to guide the end of the cable between the hole of the sleeve and the opening,
  • a hollow rod is mounted at the end of the sleeve, the cable also passing through the hollow rod,
  • the rod is mounted translative in opposition to elastic return means relative to the rest of the tensioner,
  • the elastic return means are a spring surrounding the rod,
  • it comprises a channel adapted to guide the end of the cable between the outlet of the hollow rod and the opening.

The accompanying drawings are given by way of example and are not limiting of the invention. They represent only one embodiment of the invention and will make it easy to understand.
  • The figure 1 shows different internal components of the tensioner as well as the passage of a lifeline cable through.
  • The figure 2 shows a view of the tensioner with the hood partially removed.
  • The figure 3 shows an external view of the tensioner with cable passage through an opening.
  • The figure 4 illustrates the tensioner in the position of use after mounting the cable.

The tensioner presented here generally comprises a first end provided with a sleeve 11 for fixing by crimping a safety line cable.

At the other end of the tensioner, fixing means 15 are provided for connecting the tensioner to an external element such as a fastening system on a wall or a post or to another safety line cable.

Between these two ends, the tensioner comprises a mechanism covered with a cover 17, an example of which is shown in FIG. figure 1 .

In a first step, the end 24 of the safety line cable 23 is introduced through the sleeve 11 and the rod 12 which follows it so as to reach a guide channel 20. This channel 20 is advantageously inclined to produce a deflection of the end 24 to an opening 21 formed in the upper part of the cover 17. In the mounting phase, this opening 21 is released by moving a shutter shutter 22. A cable position is obtained as presented in figure 3 .

By pulling on the end 24, the length of the cable 23 can be adjusted as well as its voltage. Advantageously, known voltage measuring means are used at this stage to adjust the level of effort.

The cable 23 is then crimped by plastic deformation of the sleeve 11 according to known crimping methods. The securing of the cable 23 and the sleeve 11 is then effective. The tension of the cable is thus final.

We can then cut the end 24 of the cable beyond the tensioner and close the shutter 22 for example by sliding.

On obtient alors la position d'usage normal présentée en figure 4.We then obtain the position of normal use presented in figure 4 .

It is easy to understand that during these operations, one or two intervention personnel are sufficient for a precise and effective implementation.

Note that it is possible to refine the tension of the cable by relative displacement of some parts of the tensioner, in particular by displacement of the sleeve 11 relative to the rod 12 via a thread or by changing the length of the fixing means 15. A graduated panel 16 accessible to vision by a window 18 makes it possible to adjust the value of the voltage.

In the interior volume of the cover 17, a voltage system and an energy absorbing device are formed in the case shown. These elements are described below as an example.

Referring to the figure 1 , the energy absorption device comprises two relatively movable parts 1, 2 whose figure 4 gives the relative position when absorbing shocks.

One of the parts, hereinafter referred to as the fixed part 1, comprises a frame 10, for example a metal frame, to which the fastening means 15 are attached, for example by a threaded rod and nut system. The frame 10 also makes it possible to receive pairs of jaws 4a, 4b here formed in a single set of vice 3 having an upper plate and a lower plate in which are made two passages for cable portions 6a, 6b substantially parallel to each other and to the direction of traction on the safety line.

Des moyens d'ajustement du serrage de l'étau 3 sont prévus ici sous forme d'une vis de serrage 5, dont le serrage peut être ajusté de sorte à modifier le frottement relatif entre les portions de câble 6a, 6b et l'étau 3.Means for adjusting the clamping of the vice 3 are provided here in the form of a clamping screw 5, the clamping of which can be adjusted so as to modify the relative friction between the cable portions 6a, 6b and the vice 3.

The cable portions 6a, 6b comprise a free portion terminated by limit stops 9a, 9b and another end capable of being driven in a translation movement during the absorption of a shock.

Advantageously, as shown, the two cable portions 6a, 6b are formed on the same cable having a turning zone 7 substantially in its middle and in conjunction with the axis of the sleeve 11 so as to produce two portions 6a, 6b asymmetrical on either side of the longitudinal axis of the assembly.

So as to guide the cable forming the portions 6a, 6b, a turning piece 8 is formed with a longitudinal portion and a substantially rounded portion adapted to receive the cable at the bend 7 as shown in FIGS. figures 3 and 4 .

Sliding relative to the turning piece 8, a rod 12 secured to the sleeve 11 is movable in opposition to resilient return means here in the form of a spring 13 surrounding the rod 12 over part of its length between the turning piece 8 and a cup 19 at the end of the rod 12. It is thus understood that, in normal position (that is to say without energy absorption due to falls), the assembly constituted by the line cable safety, the sleeve 11 and the rod 12 can slightly translate relative to the rest of the device thus constituting a light and reversible damping system.

The tension of the safety line cable can also be adjusted by adjusting the length of the entire tensioner, in particular by acting on the fastening means 15 or by providing a threaded connection between the sleeve 11 and the rod 12 allowing shorten or lengthen the set.

In the normal position, the parts 1 and 2 are secured and their relative movement occurs only during an accidental fall. To avoid inadvertent tripping of the absorption device at low stress levels, a fuse system is provided so as to produce the trip only beyond a predetermined threshold.

Ce seuil est facilement ajustable, notamment en modifiant les propriétés (par exemple la hauteur) et le matériau de l'écrou 14.In the case illustrated, the fuse means comprise a fuse nut 14 which is applied to an internal part of the body 10 and cooperates by threading with a threaded rod end secured to the turning piece 8. For example, the stem portion a relatively hard material such as steel and the fuse nut 14 of a less hard material such as aluminum. In this way, by adjusting the resistance of the threaded connection between the nut 14 and the threaded rod of the turning piece 8, the parts 1 and 2 are set in motion only beyond a predetermined force threshold. This threshold is easily adjustable, in particular by modifying the properties (for example the height) and the material of the nut 14.

An exemplary use of the tensioner of the invention is given below.

In the first place, the tensioner is attached to an external element such as a fixed wall, by fixing means 15. At its other end, it is connected to the end of a safety line cable by crimping the cable in the sleeve 11. During this step, and subsequently by acting on the length of the tensioner (in particular by relative displacement of the fastening means 15 and the body 10 or the sleeve 11 and the rod 12), it is possible to adjust the tension applied on the line of life.

In the normal use position, no movement between the parts 1 and 2 is produced and a translation of the rod 12 against the spring 13 allows the damping of slight variations of tensile force applied by the cable of safety line on the turnbuckle.

During an accidental fall, the person connected to the safety line generates additional traction on the safety line cable and, consequently, on the turnbuckle. At this level of effort, the fuse link is broken, in particular by tearing the threads of the fuse nut 14 of softer material than the threaded rod. It is easily understood that a relative movement between the part 1 and the part 2 is then possible, causing the driving of the turning piece 8 with the sleeve 11 and the rod 12 from right to left.

The hood 17 in two portions follows this movement.

During this phase, the portions 6a, 6b move by rubbing on the walls of the passages formed in the vise 3. This friction produces an energy absorption. If the displacement continues, it reaches the end stops 9a, 9b which are applied on the side of the vice 3.

When the energy of the fall has been absorbed at least partially, the assembly comes to rest in a position of relative spacing between the parts 1 and 2.

The formation of two cable portions 6a, 6b makes it possible to balance the assembly in the direction of traction and produces two symmetrical friction zones. Another advantage of this embodiment is to allow the use of smaller diameter cables than if a single cable was formed thus ensuring better winding capacity of the free end of the cable portions 6a, 6b and a greater length . These windings are received in a volume dedicated for this purpose formed in a cavity internal to the cover 17.
