Description

  • The invention relates to a security element for embedding in security papers, documents of value and the like with a carrier film having opposing first and second major surfaces, an optically variable security feature disposed on the first major surface and an adhesive layer applied to the second major surface.
  • Security documents, such as banknotes, stocks, bonds, certificates, vouchers, checks, high-quality admission tickets, but also other forgery-prone papers, such as passports or other identity documents, are often provided with security elements for security, which allow a verification of the authenticity of the value document and at the same time serve as protection against unauthorized reproduction.
  • The security elements can be designed, for example, in the form of a security thread completely or partially embedded in a banknote. Security elements with viewing-angle-dependent effects play a special role, since they can not be reproduced even with the most modern copiers. Such security elements are equipped with optically variable structures, such as diffraction structures or microlens arrays, which give the viewer a different image impression at different viewing angles and, for example, show a different color impression and / or another graphic motif depending on the viewing angle.
  • For embedding in security paper or documents of value, however, security threads with optically variable structures can only be coated with adhesive on the side facing away from the structures, since otherwise the optically variable structures are destroyed or adhesively bonded by the adhesive be that the optically variable effect is no longer recognizable. The anchoring of security threads with optically variable structures in the substrate is therefore lower than the conventional security threads, which can be coated on both sides with adhesive.
  • The DE 69914 944 T2 (= Dl) describes a security paper with an elongated security element. In paragraphs [0022], [0026] and [0027], a strip is described which is preferably completely or partially metallised or carries one or more holograms. One side of the strip is preferably coated with an adhesive. The other side may be partially coated in areas with an adhesive.
  • Based on this, the object of the invention is to avoid the disadvantages of the prior art and, in particular, to realize optically variable security features and excellent adhesion in the substrate in a security element at the same time.
  • This object is achieved by the security element having the features of the main claim. A method for producing such a security element, a security paper and a value document with such a security element are specified in the independent claims. Further developments of the invention are the subject of the dependent claims.
  • According to the invention, it is provided in a generic security element that the first main surface is provided with a structured adhesive layer in the form of patterns, characters or a coding. This ensures that portions of the optically variable security feature are not coated with adhesive and the optical variability of the security element is fully maintained, at least in these sub-areas. At the same time, optimum adhesion of the security thread in the substrate is achieved by coating the carrier film with adhesive layers on both sides.
  • In general, strip-type elements or individual elements, such as patches, can be used as the security element. Preferably, the security element is a security thread.
  • According to the invention, the first major surface is provided with an adhesive layer only outside the region of the optically variable security feature. This fully preserves the optical variability of the security element. Such a structured adhesive layer can be applied with particular advantage in the register to the optically variable security feature.
  • Furthermore, the first main surface can be provided with an adhesive layer only in marginal areas. The central area of the security element is then unrestrictedly available for optically variable security features. In all embodiments, the adhesive layer of the first main surface can contain a feature substance, in particular a magnetic, electrically conductive, luminescent or infrared-absorbing feature substance, as a further authenticity indicator.
  • In an advantageous variant of the invention, the second main surface is provided over its entire surface with the adhesive layer. According to another likewise advantageous variant, the second main surface is provided with a structured adhesive layer in the form of patterns, characters or an encoding. Here, too, it makes sense to have the structured adhesive layer of the second main surface in register with the optically variable security feature of the first main surface and optionally in register to apply a structured adhesive layer of the first major surface.
  • Like the adhesive layer of the first main surface, the adhesive layer of the second main surface may contain a feature substance, in particular a magnetic, electrically conductive, luminescent or infrared-absorbing feature substance. The adhesive layers of the first and second main surfaces can also contain different feature substances, so that different authenticity tests are possible from opposite sides.
  • The optically variable security feature preferably contains microlenses, a matt structure, a hologram, a holographic grating image or another hologram-like diffraction structure.
  • The invention also includes a method for producing a security element for embedding in security papers, documents of value and the like, in which
    • a carrier film is provided with opposing first and second major surfaces,
    • the first main surface is provided with an optically variable security feature,
    • the second major surface is provided with an adhesive layer, and
    • the first major surface is provided with a patterned adhesive layer in the form of patterns, characters or an encoding.
  • Further, the invention includes a security paper for the production of value documents or the like as well as a value document, such as a banknote, identification card or the like. Security paper or document of value are equipped according to the invention with an at least partially embedded security element of the type described above.
  • The invention provides the following advantages in particular:
    • The optically variable effect of the functional surfaces remains fully preserved at the same time with improved anchoring of the security element in the substrate, at least in some areas.
    • Due to the structured and thus partial application of the adhesive layers, adhesive can be saved despite excellent adhesion compared to conventional production methods.
    • Full-surface or structured adhesive layers can be combined with feature substances to realize further authenticity features. In addition to their adhesive function, the adhesive layers then fulfill another function as a design and / or coding feature.
    • By register-accurate arrangement of optically variable elements and structured adhesive layers another authenticity feature can be formed.

  • The invention will now be explained using the example of a banknote. Fig. 1 shows a schematic representation of a banknote 10 with an embedded security thread 12 according to an embodiment of the invention. Fig. 2 shows the layer structure of the security thread of Fig. 1 schematically in cross-section, Fig. 3 shows in (a) a top view, in (b) a top view of the underside of the thread.
  • Regarding Fig. 2 For example, the security thread 12 comprises a plastic carrier film 20 having a first major surface 22 (upper side) and an opposite one second major surface 24 (bottom). On the upper side 22, an optically variable security feature 26 is arranged, for example a microlens arrangement, an embossed structure, a diffractive structure, a matt structure and the like.
  • For embedding the security thread 12 in the banknote paper, an adhesive layer 28 is applied to the underside 24 of the carrier film 20. In addition to the adhesive layer 28, the upper side 22 of the carrier film 20 outside the region of the optically variable security feature 26 is also partially provided with an adhesive layer 30. On the one hand, this measure achieves the full optical variability of the security thread 12 and, on the other hand, ensures optimum adhesion of the security thread 12 in the banknote substrate.
  • How best in Fig. 3 can be seen, the adhesive layer 28 in the embodiment over the entire surface of the bottom 24 of the carrier film 20 is applied ( Fig. 3 (b) ). On the upper side 22 of the security thread 12, the adhesive layer 30 is applied in each case along the two edges of the carrier film in a narrow edge region (FIG. Fig. 3 (a) ). Despite the significantly improved anchoring, however, almost the entire area of the carrier film for the security feature 26 is still available.
  • Both the adhesive layer 28 of the lower side 24 and the adhesive layer 30 of the upper side 22 can be applied in a structured manner to the carrier film 20. It is advisable to apply the structured adhesive layers 28, 30 in the register to the optically variable security feature 26.
  • Within the security thread, an additional security feature may be provided by using one or both adhesive layers 28, 30 with feature substances, such as magnetic, electroconductive, luminescent or infrared absorbing feature substances.
  • Fig. 4 shows a further embodiment of a security thread according to the invention, in which all these additional features are realized for illustration. Fig. 4 (a) shows a top view of the top of the security thread, Fig. 4 (b) a view of the underside of the thread. The optically variable security feature 36, for example a microlens array, is arranged at regular intervals on the upper side 32 of the security thread.
  • In the edge regions of the carrier film and additionally in the intermediate spaces of the optically variable security feature 36, a structured adhesive layer 40 is applied in register to the top side 32. Adhesive layer 40 is admixed with a magnetic feature substance 42, which serves as an authenticity feature in a machine test of the security thread.
  • The underside 34 of the security thread is likewise provided with a structured adhesive layer 38, the structural elements of which are formed by the numerical sequence "10" corresponding to the denomination of the banknote. The individual structural elements are applied in register to the security features 36 and the structured adhesive layer 40 of the top 32. In addition, a luminescent feature substance 44 is added to the adhesive layer 38, so that the digit sequences "10" light up when the banknote is illuminated with UV radiation.

Claims (17)

  1. A security element (12) for embedment in security papers and value documents, having a substrate foil (20) having opposing first and second main surfaces, an optically variable security feature (26, 36) disposed on the first main surface (22, 32) and an adhesive layer (28, 38) applied on the second main surface (24, 34), characterized in that the first main surface (22, 32) is provided with a structured adhesive layer (30,40) in the form of patterns, characters or a code outside the region of the optically variable security feature (26, 36).
  2. The security element according to claim 1, characterized in that the first main surface (22, 32) is provided with the adhesive layer (30,40) only in border regions.
  3. The security element according to claim 2, characterized in that the adhesive layer (30, 40) of the first main surface (22, 32) is applied in register with the optically variable security feature (26, 36).
  4. The security element according to at least one of claims 1 to 3, characterized in that the second main surface (24) is contiguously provided with the adhesive layer (28).
  5. The security element according to at least one of claims 1 to 3, characterized in that the second main surface (34) is provided with a structured adhesive layer (38) in the form of patterns, characters or a code.
  6. The security element according to claim 5, characterized in that the structured adhesive layer (38) of the second main surface (34) is applied in register with the optically variable security feature (36) of the first main surface (32).
  7. The security element according to at least one of claims 1 to 6, characterized in that the adhesive layer of the first and/ or second main surface includes a feature substance (44), especially a magnetic, electrically conductive, luminescent or infrared-absorbing feature substance.
  8. The security element according to at least one of claims 1 to 7, characterized in that the optically variable security feature (26, 36) includes microlenses, a matte pattern, a hologram, a holographic grating image or another hologram-like diffraction pattern.
  9. A method for manufacturing a security element (12) for embedment in security papers and value documents, in which
    - a substrate foil (20) having opposing first and second main surfaces is provided,
    - the first main surface (22, 32) is provided with an optically variable security feature (26, 36),
    - the second main surface (24, 34) is provided with an adhesive layer (28, 38), and
    - the first main surface (22, 32) is provided with a structured adhesive layer (30, 40) in the form of patterns, characters or a code outside the region of the optically variable security feature (26, 36).
  10. The method according to claim 9, characterized in that the first main surface (22,32) is provided with the adhesive layer (30,40) only in border regions.
  11. The method according to claim 10, characterized in that the adhesive layer (30, 40) of the first main surface (22, 32) is applied in register with the optically variable security feature (26, 36).
  12. The method according to at least one of claims 9 to 11, characterized in that the second main surface (24) is contiguously provided with the adhesive layer (28).
  13. The method according to at least one of claims 9 to 11, characterized in that the second main surface (34) is provided with a structured adhesive layer (38) in the form of patterns, characters or a code.
  14. The method according to claim 13, characterized in that the structured adhesive layer (38) of the second main surface (34) is applied in register with the optically variable security feature (36) of the first main surface (32).
  15. The method according to at least one of claims 9 to 14, characterized in that the adhesive layer of the first and/or second main surface is applied together with a feature substance (44), especially a magnetic, electrically conductive, luminescent or infrared-absorbing feature substance.
  16. A security paper for manufacturing value documents or the like, having an at least partially embedded security element (12) according to one of claims 1 to 15.
  17. A value document, such as a banknote, identification card or the like, having an at least partially embedded security element (12) according to one of claims 1 to 15.
