Abstract

A process for producing tetrahydropyran-4-one, which is represented by the formula (1), characterized by reacting at least one of dihydropyran-4-one and pyran-4-one, which are represented by the formula (2): (2) (wherein (A) indicates a single bond or double bond), with hydrogen either (a) in a mixed solvent comprising an aprotic solvent and an alcohol solvent in the presence of a metal catalyst or (b) in a hydrophobic organic solvent in the presence of an anhydrous metal catalyst obtained by dehydrating a hydrous metal catalyst.
