Abstract
Catheter device, comprising a tubular catheter (1) which is connected at the proximal end to a catheter hub (2) having a hollow space (2a) which is open toward the proximal side, a needle (3) displaceable in the catheter (1) and connected at the proximal end to a needle hub (4) which is inserted in the catheter hub (2) such that the needle tip protrudes from the catheter, a needle guard in the form of a spring clip (5) displaceable on the needle (3), which spring clip is arranged in the hollow space (2a) of the catheter hub and provided with an engaging means which, during withdrawal of the needle from the catheter, cooperates with an engaging means (3a) on the needle such that the spring clip is removed with the needle from the catheter hub (2) while the spring clip covers and blocks the needle tip, wherein the spring clip (5) is held in the catheter hub (2) only by frictional engagement or by hooking of the edges with the inner surface of the hollow space (2a) of the catheter hub (2) until the engaging means (3a) on the needle cooperates with the engaging means on the spring clip (5) during withdrawal of the needle.
Description
Catheter device
The invention relates to a catheter device according to the preamble of claim 1.
A catheter device of this type is known from EP 1 180 381, wherein the ends of the spring arms of the spring clip which abut on the needle shaft are held in the catheter hub by an annular projection on the inner circumference of the catheter hub, until the engaging means in the form of a crimp on the needle engages with the bore circumference at the proximal transverse wall of the spring clip. In this engaged position, the two spring arms overlap the needle tip and are thereby released from the projection protruding radially inward, so that the spring clip with the needle can be removed from the catheter hub.
The projection protruding radially inward on the catheter hub for fixing the spring clip in the catheter hub requires a certain attention to detail regarding production and assembly. The invention is therefore based on the object of forming a catheter device of this type such that it can be more simply produced and assembled, without the holding function of the spring clip in the catheter hub being adversely affected.
This object is solved according to the invention by the features in the characterizing part of claim 1. Because the spring clip is held in the catheter hub only by wedging or hooking of the edges with the inner surface of the catheter hub until the engaging means on the needle cooperates with the engaging means on the spring clip during removal of the needle, there results a simpler design of the catheter hub and a simpler assembly.
The invention will become more apparent from the following detailed description with reference to the drawings.

Fig. 1 shows a catheter 1 which is fixed in a socket-shaped catheter hub 2 whose hollow space 2a, which is open toward the proximal side, is preferably shaped conically at least at its end section such that the maximum diameter exists at the proximal end of the catheter hub 2. Into the catheter 1 a needle 3 is inserted, which is fixed on a needle hub 4 which is inserted in the proximal end of the catheter hub 2, wherein the needle tip protrudes beyond the distal end of the catheter 1. h the hollow space 2a of the catheter hub 2, a spring clip 5 is arranged, which is displaceable on the needle shaft and abuts on the needle shaft with the angled ends of two diametrically opposed spring arms 5a and 5b. Near the needle tip, the needle is provided with crimping or the like, so that a radial projection 3a results which forms an engaging means and cooperates with a bore in the proximal transverse wall 5c of the spring clip such that duririg the withdrawal of the needle 3 from the catheter hub, the spring clip 5 is removed from the catheter hub by means of the engaging means 3 a, wherein the angled free ends of the spring arms of the spring clip overlap and block the needle tip, as shown in Fig. 3.
In order to hold the spring clip 5 in the catheter hub 2 while the needle 3 is withdrawn from the catheter by means of the needle hub 4 and the angled ends of the spring arms 5a and 5b slide on the needle shaft, the outer corners of the proximal transverse wall 5c of the spring clip 5 are hooked or clamped together with the inner wall of the catheter hub 2 such that premature release of the spring clip from the catheter hub is prevented. Only when the radial projection 3a engages at the edge of the bore 5d in the transverse wall 5c of the spring clip and tensile force is exerted on the needle hub 4, is the engagement between spring clip 5 and catheter hub 2 released.
In this protective position shown in Fig. 3, the spring clip can no longer be displaced in the axial direction on the needle shaft, because the needle tip and the radial projection 3a form axial stops for the spring clip. It is not necessary here for the spring clip to exert a clamping force on the needle in the radial direction.
In the position of the spring clip 5 according to Fig. 1, it is not necessary for the radially outer areas 5e und 5f of the ends of the spring arms to abut on the inner wall of the catheter hub 2 or to be pressed by the needle shaft against the inner wall of the catheter hub. The holding force of the spring clip in the catheter hub can be guaranteed by the four corners of the transverse wall 5c alone, which press into the plastic material of the catheter hub 2.
Fig. 4 shows a view of the needle from above in Fig. 1, wherein the crimping of the needle shaft is made clear which leads to the diametrically opposed radial projections at 3a.
The transverse wall 5c of the spring clip 5 can be designed such that during the exertion of a certain tensile force by the radial projections 3a of the needle, the transverse wall 5c curves slightly towards the proximal side, so that the comers of the transverse wall 5c are released more easily from the inner circumference of the catheter hub.
Fig. 5 shows a view, rotated by 90°, of the spring clip 5, or a view of the spring clip from above in Fig. 1, wherein in the area of the proximal end of the spring clip 5, diametrically projecting engaging members 6 are provided, which hook on the inner circumference of the catheter hub 2 consisting of plastic material. As can be seen from Fig. 5, these engaging members are formed somewhat -shaped and elastic in the view according to Fig. 5, so that due to their radial prestress they produce a certain clamping effect by which the corners of the spring clip wedge or hook into the material of the catheter hub 2. Preferably, these engaging members 6 engage in a conically-shaped proximal end section 2b of the catheter hub 2 at the inner circumferential wall. The distal area of the hollow space 2a can here be designed cylindrically.
According to a further embodiment, the radially outer ends of the engaging members 6 can he adapted in shape to the inner circumference of the catheter hub 2, to support frictional engagement.
When engaging members 6 are provided, it is not necessary for the spring clip 5 itself to abut with the proximal transverse wall 5c on the inner circumference of the catheter hub. However, the proximal transverse wall 5c can also be designed such that it hooks its corners into the inner wall of the catheter hub, as shown in Fig. 2, to reinforce the fixing of the spring clip in the catheter hub.
Radially projecting engaging members can also be provided at another position on the spring clip, for example in the area of the spring arms, so that during overlapping of the needle tip by the free ends of the spring arms 5a and 5b, the tension is decreased due to which the engaging members mounted on the spring arms abut on the inner circumference of the catheter hub. Fig. 7 shows an embodiment of such a spring clip, on whose spring arms 5a and 5b radially projecting engaging members 7 are formed by a corresponding shaping of the spring arms.
In the engaging members 7 projecting from the spring arms, the hollow space 2a of the catheter hub can also be formed cylindrically.
Instead of the engaging members 7 projecting radially from the spring arms, the angled free ends of the spring arms 5a and 5b can also be so formed that they simultaneously radially outwardly form an engaging member with the inner circumference of the catheter hub. In other words, the engaging members 7 in Fig. 7 can be transferred to the distal ends of the spring arms.
Fig. 8 shows an embodiment having a one-arm spring clip 8 which surrounds the needle 3 for example in a U-shape and is provided in the central area with a bracket 9 which presses elastically against the needle shaft. The bracket 9 cooperates with a groove (not shown) on the circumference of the needle 3 as an engaging means such that the front edge of the bracket 9 engages in the circumferential groove on the needle when the needle tip lies witiiin the spring clip and is covered and blocked by the angled end of the spring arm. The radially outer ends 8a and 8b of the proximal transverse wall 8c abut on the inner wall of the catheter hub 2 in the axial direction offset from one another, wherein the position 8a lies by a pre-determined amount before the bearing position 8b. In this one-arm embodiment of a spring clip, too, this is held in the catheter hub only by frictional engagement or hooking of the proximal edges of the spring clip on the inner circumferential wall of the catheter hub 2, as this is described in the preceding embodiments.
h the embodiment of a spring clip according to Fig. 8, in the protective position the elastic bracket 9 exerts a certain clamping force in the radial direction on the needle shaft, wherein the bracket 9 is diametrically opposed to the free end of the spring arm. Hereby, in the
protective position, the needle shaft is clamped between spring arm and bracket 9 in the radial direction, while a displacement in the axial direction is not possible.
In each of the embodiments described, a one-part spring clip is shown as a protective member or needle guard. The spring clip or a corresponding protective member can also be composed of a plurality of parts.
Claims
Catheter device, comprising a tubular catheter (1) which is connected at the proximal end to a catheter hub (2) having a hollow space (2a) which is open toward the proximal side, a needle (3) displaceable in the catheter (1) and connected at the proximal end to a needle hub (4) which is inserted in the catheter hub (2) such that the needle tip protrudes from the catheter, a needle guard in the form of a spring clip (5)displaceable on the needle (3), which spring clip is arranged in the hollow space (2a) of the catheter hub and provided with an engaging means which, during withdrawal of the needle from the catheter, cooperates with an engaging means (3a) on the needle such that the spring clip is removed with the needle from the catheter hub (2) while the spring clip covers and blocks the needle tip, characterized in that the spring clip (5) is held in the catheter hub (2) only by factional engagement or by hooking of the edges with the inner surface of the hollow space (2a) of the catheter hub (2) until the engaging means (3a) on the needle cooperates with the engaging means on the spring clip (5) during withdrawal of the needle.
Catheter device according to claim 1, wherein the hollow space (2a) in the catheter hub is conically shaped at least at the proximal end section such that the greatest diameter exists at the proximal end.
Catheter device according to claim 2, wherein the spring clip (5) is held in the area of the proximal end by factional engagement or by hooking of the edges on the inner wall of the catheter hub (2).
Catheter device according to one of the preceding claims, wherein on the circumference of the spring clip, at least two diametrically projecting engaging members (6; 7) are provided, which abut on the inner wall of the catheter hub (2) with frictional engagement or by hooking.
5. Catheter device according to claim 4, wherein the engaging members (6; 7) are formed elastically and abut with prestress on the inner wall of the catheter hub (2).
6. Catheter device according to claim 1, wherein engaging members (7) are arranged or formed on diametrically opposed spring arms of the spring clip (5).
