An article carrier comprising a carrying panel member (14, 18) having at least one aperture (50) for receiving an article (B), the aperture >(50) being defined in part by a retention tab (47, 55) and in part by a stopper tab (64), the retention tab (47, 55) extending upwardly to engage the underside of a radially protruding part of the article (B) in the aperture (50) wherein the stopper tab (64) is provided to engage the upper side of the radially protruding part of the article (B) in the aperture (50).

Description

TOP GRIPPING ARTICLE CARRIER AND BLANK
Background of the Invention
This invention relates to a carton for packaging at least one article for example bottles, having a top flange which is engaged by the carton. In particular, this invention relates to a carton incorporating a structure for retaining the flange.
GB 1 479 729 to Vanstone discloses a top gripping carrier having top and side panels, opposed engaging elements being struck from bevelled panels intermediate the top and side panels and being defined at their upper engaging edges by slots at their lower edges by a fold line connecting the bevelled panel. The engaging elements operate in conjunction with a connecting panel intermediate the top and side panels to engage the rim of soft drink cans and the like of reduced diameter with respect to the side wall of the cans.
US 3 638 990 to Huault discloses a top gripping carrier for flanged articles in which a cut line extends along the majority of the intersection between the top and side panels such that the side panel, when folding downwardly and inwardly, engages the under side of the article flanges to retain the articles within the carrier.
Other examples of the prior art are US 3 387 879 and US 4 533 047.
The above mentioned carriers are adapted for particular types of article, due to the arrangement of the engaging elements, hi particular, the arrangements require complicated construction, prior to being engaged with the article.
The present invention seeks to overcome, or at least mitigate, the problems of the prior art.
Summary of the Invention
One aspect of the invention provides an article carrier comprising a carrying panel member having an aperture for receiving an article, the aperture being defined in part by a retention tab and in part by a stopper tab the retention tab extending upwardly to engage the underside of the radially protruding part of the article in the aperture, wherein the stopper tab is provided to engage the the radially protruding part of the article in the aperture.
Preferably, the stopper tab is provided to engage the upper side of the radially protruding part of the article in the aperture. More preferably, the stopper tab extends into the respective aperture when the carrier is in blank form.
The carrying panel member may comprise a riser panel, and a supporting panel. The aperture may be formed in the supporting panel, and the retention tab of the aperture is hingedly connected to the respective supporting panel.
Optionally, the aperture may extend into the adjacent riser panel and the retention tab of each aperture is hingedly connected to the adjacent riser panel.
According to an optional feature of this aspect of the invention, the retention tab of the aperture is connected to the respective supporting and riser panels along first and second fold lines respectively, and the first and second fold lines of the retention tab of each aperture are arranged to diverge toward the respective aperture.
According to another optional feature of this aspect of the invention, there further comprises a top panel hingedly connected to the carrying panel member and wherein the stopper tab extends from the top panel into the aperture. There may furtlier comprise a side wall panel hingedly connected to the carrying panel member and includes a tab extending into the aperture to assist in folding the side wall panel when the article is inserted into the aperture.
A second aspect of the invention provides a blank for forming an article carrier comprising a top panel and a carrying panel member having an aperture for receiving the one or each article, the aperture being defined in part by a retention tab and in part by a stopper tab extending from the top panel into the aperture. The carrying panel member of the second aspect of the invention may comprise a riser panel, and a supporting panel, the aperture is formed in the supporting panel, and the retention tab of each aperture is hingedly connected to the respective supporting panel.
Optionally, the aperture extends into the adjacent riser panel and the retention tab of each aperture is hingedly connected to the adjacent riser panel. Preferably, the retention tab of the aperture is connected to the respective supporting and riser panels along first and second fold lines respectively, and the first and second fold lines of the retention tab of each aperture are arranged to diverge toward the respective aperture.
A third aspect of the invention provides a package comprising at least one necked article each article having a radially protruding part along the neck and a top-gripping carrier according to one of the preceding paragraphs for engaging the neck of the one or each article.

Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiment
Referring to the drawings and, in particular, Figure 1 there is shown a top gripping article carrier formed from a blank 10 of paperboard or like foldable sheet material. The blank 10 comprises a first carrying panel member 14, a top panel 16 and a second carrying panel member 18 hingedly connected one to the next in series along fold lines 24 and 26. In one class of embodiments, there further comprises first side wall panel 12 hingedly connected to first carrying panel member 14 along fold line 22 and second side wall panel 20 hingedly connected to second carrying panel member 18 along fold line 28.
Each carrying panel member 14 and 18 comprises a support panel 30, 38 and a riser panel 32, 36 hingedly connected together along an interrupted fold line 34 and 40 respectively.
There comprises one or more article retention structures 42. In Figure 1, there comprises six article retention structures arranged in two rows of three structures each to receive a 2 x 3 article array. Of course, other arrays are envisaged without departing from the scope of invention. Each article retention structure 42 is identical and therefore only one structure will now be described.
The retention structure 42 comprises an aperture 50 for receiving an article B. The aperture is defined in part by a retention tab 47 and in part by stopper tab 64. The retention tab 47, in this embodiment, is provided by two adjacent panels 44 and 46 hingedly connected together along fold line 45. The retention tab 47 is connected to the respective supporting panel along fold line 48. Preferably, the retention tab 47 is also hingedly connected to riser panel 32 along fold line 49. Fold lines 48 and 49 are arranged to diverge towards the aperture 50.
In one class of embodiments, there further comprises a second retention tab 55 connected to the respective supporting panel 56 and optionally, riser panel 58 along first and second fold lines 60, 61 which are similarly arranged to diverge towards the respective apertures.
The shape of the or each retention tab 47, 55 is constructed to define an edge 75, 77 to engage the underside of a radially protruding part of the article in the aperture when the carrier is in a set up condition. The stopper tab 64 protrudes inwardly into the aperture and is shaped to engage the radially protruding part of an article in the aperture, in order to improve the rigidity of the top panel, with respect to an article held by the retention structure.
In order to assist in the construction of the side wall panels, there further comprises a tab 54 which extends into aperture 50. Tab 54 is defined and separated from the adjacent retention tabs 47, 55 by cut line 52.
In one class of embodiments there further comprises one or more hand apertures defined by tabs 68 and 70 in top panel 16 which can be separated therefrom by being pushed in an inward manner, as is well known in the art.
In order to form the completed carrier in flat collapsed condition from the blank, a series of sequential folding operations are required and will be described further with reference to Figures 2 and 3 of the drawings. The folding operations can be performed in one or more straight line machines, so that the carrier is not required to be rotated or inverted to complete its construction. The folding process is not limited to that described below and can be altered according to particular manufacturing requirements.
Referring in particular to Figure 2, the blank 10 is placed on to one or more articles B to be packaged, such that the top panel 16 is positioned intermediate two adjacent rows of articles B. The blank 10 is then pushed in a downward direction so that the stopper tabs 64 engage the protruding part of the article.
In the illustrated embodiment, it is preferred for the edge of the stopper tab 64 to engage the upper part of the protruding part P of the article; although it is envisaged that the stopper tab 64 could be shaped to be received by the underside of the protruding part, without departing from the scope of invention.
As top panel 16 is engaged with the articles B, the or each carrying panel member 14, 18 is constructed by continuing to push the blank 10 in a downward direction relative the articles. This action causes the top of the articles B to be inserted through the apertures 50 to automatically fold the support panels 30, 38 and riser panels 32, 36 by folding tabs 44 and 46 out of alignment with the respective support panel 30 and riser panel 32 along fold line 48 and 49. The tabs 44 and 46 are folded out of alignment with each other along fold line 45 to better conform to the shape of the article
Similarly, the second retention tab 55 is also folded in like manner by folding tabs 56 and 58 out of alignment with the respective support panel 30 and riser panel 32 along fold line 60 and 61. The tab 56 and 58 are folded out of alignment along fold line 62. Thus, the edge 75 , 77 of the or each retaining tab 47, 55 is engaged by the underside of the protruding part P of the article as shown in Figures 2 and 3.
hi order to construct the first and second side wall panels 12, 20 the protruding tab 54 engages the top of the article B as it passes through aperture 50, which causes the panels 12 and 20 to be folded automatically out of alignment with support panels 30,38 respectively along fold lines 22 and 28. This action forces the aforesaid panels 12, 20 in a downward direction to form the side wall structure as illustrated in Figures 2 and 3. Preferably, the upper edge 52 of tab 54 also engages the protruding part P of the article B, to maintain the side wall panels 12, 20 in a set up condition and further, to provide additional support for the article carrier to improve its rigidity.
Figures 2 and 3 illustrate the hand apertures fonned from tab 68 and 70.
In order to remove one or more of the articles B from the article carrier the end user engages the article and pulls the article in a downward direction to force the stopper tab 64 and retaining tabs 47, 55 to become disengaged from the protruding part of the article.
The present invention and its preferred embodiment relates to an arrangement for providing a an article retaining structure. However, it is anticipated that the invention can be applied to a variety of carriers and is not limited to those of the top gripping type hereinbefore described and could be used for numerous applications for example a wraparound carton. It will be recognised that as used herein, directional references such as "top" and "side" do not limit the respective panels to such orientation, but merely serve to distinguish these panels from one another. Any reference to hinged connection should not be construed as necessarily referring to a single fold line only: indeed it is envisaged that hinged connection can be formed from one or more of one of the following, a score line, a frangible line or a fold line, without departing from the scope of invention.
It should be understood that various changes may be made within the scope of the present invention, for example, the size and shape of the panels and apertures may be adjusted to accommodate articles of differing size or shape. The carton may accommodate more than one article in different arrays.

Claims

CLAΓMS
1. An article carrier comprising a carrying panel member having an aperture for receiving an article, the aperture being defined in part by a retention tab and in part by a stopper tab, the retention tab extending upwardly to engage the underside of a radially protruding part of the article in the aperture, wherein the stopper tab is provided to engage the upper side of the radially protruding part of the article in the aperture .
2. An article carrier as claimed in claim 1 wherein the stopper tab extends into the respective aperture when the carrier is in blank form
3. An article carrier as claimed in claim 2 wherein the carrying panel member comprises a riser panel, and a supporting panel, wherein the aperture is fonned in the supporting panel, and the retention tab of the aperture is hingedly connected to the respective supporting panel.
4. An article carrier as claimed in claim 3 wherein the aperture extends into the adjacent riser panel and the retention tab of each aperture is hingedly connected to the adjacent riser panel.
5. An article carrier as claimed in claim 4 wherein the retention tab of the aperture is connected to the respective supporting and riser panels along first and second fold lines respectively, and the first and second fold lines of the retention tab of each aperture are arranged to diverge toward the respective aperture.
6. An article carrier as claimed in any preceding claim wherein there further comprises a top panel hingedly connected to the carrying panel member and wherein the stopper tab extends from the top panel into the aperture.
7. An article carrier as claimed in claim 6 wherein there further comprises a side wall panel hingedly connected to the carrying panel member and includes a tab, extending into the aperture to assist in folding the side wall panel when the article is inserted into the aperture.
8. A blank for forming an article carrier comprising a top panel and a carrying panel member having an aperture for receiving the one or each article, the aperture being defined in part by a retention tab and in part by a stopper tab extending from the top panel into the aperture.
9. The blank as claimed in claim 8 wherein the carrying panel member comprises a riser panel, and a supporting panel, the aperture is formed in the supporting panel, and the retention tab of each aperture is hingedly connected to the respective supporting panel.
10. The blank as claimed in claim 9 wherein the aperture extends into the adjacent riser panel and the retention tab of each aperture is hingedly connected to the adjacent riser panel.
11. The blank as claimed in claim 10 wherein the retention tab of the aperture is connected to the respective supporting and riser panels along first and second fold lines respectively, and the first and second fold lines of the retention tab of each aperture are arranged to diverge toward the respective aperture.
12. A package comprising at least one necked article each having a radially protruding part along the neck and a top-gripping carrier as claimed in any of claims 1 to 8 for engaging the neck ofthe one or each article.
