Definitions
- the invention relates to a method for operating a hearing aid and a hearing aid with an input transducer, a signal processing unit, an output transducer, a voltage source and means for checking the state of charge of the voltage source.
- Hearing aids are usually operated with a voltage source in the form of a battery or a rechargeable battery. These are usually emptied after only a few days of operation and must be replaced or recharged. It is therefore desirable for the hearing aid wearer to be informed in good time of a voltage source that is about to run out. For example, e.g. From US 6,320,969 a hearing aid is known which monitors the state of charge of the voltage source and warns the user by emitting an acoustic signal in front of a declining voltage source.
- a hearing aid which comprises means for checking the state of the voltage source. If the energy stored therein comes to an end, then the clock frequency is reduced by these means and the signal processing is converted into a restricted operating mode. For a limited time still a limited operation of the hearing aid with the voltage source used is possible.
- Object of the present invention is to provide a simple feasible, alternative solution to the above problem.
- the object is achieved in a hearing aid with an input transducer, a signal processing unit, an output transducer, a voltage source and means for checking the state of charge of the voltage source in that the hearing aid comprises means for lowering the low-frequency signal components in the acoustic output signal in response to the residual charge of the voltage source ,
- an input signal is recorded by means of an input transducer and converted into an electrical input signal.
- an input transducer usually serves as an input transducer at least one microphone which receives an acoustic input signal.
- Modern hearing aids often comprise a microphone system with a plurality of microphones in order to achieve a direction dependent on the direction of arrival of acoustic signals reception, a directional characteristic.
- the input transducers may also include a telecoil or antenna for receiving electromagnetic input signals.
- a hearing aid may be connected to a so-called "MLX module" in the form of an audio shoe for wireless reception of a signal transmitted from an external device.
- the input signals converted by the input transducer into electrical input signals are for further processing and amplification fed to a signal processing unit.
- the further processing and amplification takes place to compensate for the individual hearing loss of a hearing aid wearer, as a rule, as a function of the signal frequency.
- the signal processing unit outputs an electrical output signal, which is fed via an output transducer to the hearing of the hearing aid wearer, so that the latter perceives the output signal as an acoustic signal.
- output transducers usually listeners are used, which generate an acoustic output signal.
- output transducers for generating mechanical vibrations are also known, which directly excite certain parts of the ear, such as the ossicles, to vibrate.
- output transducers are known which directly stimulate neurons of the ear.
- the invention has the advantage that the lowering of the low-frequency signal components with respect to the higher-frequency signal components in the acoustic output signal is a technically easy to implement procedure.
- a change in the clock frequency of a digital hearing aid which entails a number of other measures (adaptation of the transfer function, adaptation of filter parameters, etc.)
- no further adjustments to the signal processing are required when lowering the low frequencies.
- the vast majority of the input signals remain understandable. The latter is often no longer the case, in particular with a broadband gain reduction.
- the bass reduction does not lead to a deterioration of the harmonic distortion.
- the hearing aid wearer hears the majority of acoustic input signals with the amplification needed for him.
- the measure according to the invention only leads to a sound shift.
- the invention has little effect on the transmission of acoustic signals which are of importance to the hearing aid wearer. These are, for example, hearing aid-internally or externally generated warning signals.
- the hearing aid wearer can thus continue to hear the internally generated warning signal for warning of a voltage source that is about to run out in the amplification required for it.
- the warnings are preferably carried out at regular intervals by means of voice output and comprise a time estimate with respect to the duration for which the restricted operation according to the invention can still be maintained.
- a reduction of low-frequency signal components in the acoustic output signal reduces the power consumption of the hearing aid by up to 80%. From the time of accessing the measure according to the invention, so that up to five times longer remaining time is possible than would be the case without energy-saving measures.
- mechanical means for lowering the low-frequency signal components may be provided in the acoustic output signal.
- electronic means are used for lowering low-frequency signal components in the acoustic output signal.
- filter means which can preferably be adapted to different boundary conditions by means of corresponding filter parameters.
- the measures according to the invention are advantageously always taken when the residual charge of the voltage source used falls below a certain threshold value.
- This threshold is preferably, e.g. during programming of the hearing aid, adjustable.
- a development of the invention provides several different threshold values with respect to the residual charge of the voltage source used and a lowering of the low-frequency signal components in several stages. For example, a drop in the output voltage of the voltage source below a certain threshold by 20 mV each leads to a lowering of the low-frequency signal components of 2 dB each.
- a further embodiment of the invention provides, with further decreasing output voltage of the voltage source, a shift of the cutoff frequency, below which a signal reduction takes place. For example, If the output voltage of the voltage source falls below a first threshold, signal components are lowered below the cutoff frequency of 400 Hz. If the output voltage falls below a second threshold value, the cutoff frequency below which a cut occurs shifts to higher frequencies, e.g. 600 Hz. Of course, more than two thresholds or cutoff frequencies can be set.
- the lowering of the low-frequency signal components or the shift of the cutoff frequency, below which a reduction takes place not in stages, but continuously with decreasing output voltage of the voltage source.
- the associated gradual lowering of the low-frequency signal components is thus barely noticed by the user at first.
- Fig. 1 shows in block diagram a hearing aid with a microphone 1 for receiving an acoustic input signal and output of an electrical signal.
- the electrical signal is fed to a signal processing unit 2.
- the processed and amplified output signal of the signal processing unit 2 is converted back into an acoustic signal by means of a receiver 3 and supplied to the hearing of a hearing aid wearer.
- the voltage supply of said components of the hearing aid device via a voltage source 4, which is usually designed as a battery or accumulator.
- a voltage source 4 which is usually designed as a battery or accumulator.
- the hearing aid further includes a voltage monitor 5. If the output voltage of the voltage source 4 falls below a certain threshold, then a warning signal is fed by the voltage monitor 5 in the signal processing unit 2 and according to reinforced individual requirements of each user and output via the handset 3.
- the hearing aid according to the embodiment comprises as a special feature filter means 6 for lowering low-frequency signal components in the output signal.
- the filter means 6 need not necessarily be between the signal processing unit 2 and the handset 3 may be arranged in the signal path of the hearing aid from the microphone 1 to the handset 3. Rather, appropriately designed filter means in any arrangement in the signal path lead to a lowering of the low-frequency signal components of the acoustic output signal.
- the filter means 6 could thus for example be inserted directly after the microphone 1 in the signal path.
- the filter means 6 are designed as high pass, so that higher-frequency signal components can pass unhindered and low-frequency signal components are suppressed.
- the filter means 6 do not influence the transmission behavior of the hearing aid device permanently, but only when the output voltage of the voltage source 4 falls below a certain, preferably adjustable threshold value.
- this threshold coincides with the above-mentioned threshold at which the audible warning signal is generated for the user.
- several threshold values can be set in the voltage monitor 5, and the lowering of low-frequency signal components in the output signal takes place in several stages.
- An embodiment in this regard is illustrated in FIG. It can be seen from the diagram that a lowering of the low-frequency signal components takes place by 2 dB as soon as the output voltage of the voltage source falls below the first threshold value S1 of 1.1 V.
- the further threshold values S2, S3 and S4 the low-frequency signal components in the output signal are lowered by a further 2 dB in each case.
- the signal reduction takes place by a corresponding control of the filter means 6 by the voltage monitor 5.
- the lowering of low-frequency signal components of the output signal falls below the output voltage of a first threshold value S1 by a constant amount, for example -6 dB.
- the limit frequency f g is gradually increased in this exemplary embodiment, below which a signal reduction takes place. This procedure is illustrated in the diagram according to FIG. 3.
- S1 When falling below the threshold value S1, initially only frequencies below 200 Hz are lowered. If the output voltage falls below the threshold value S2, signal components below 400 Hz are lowered in the output signal. Even with the threshold values S3 and S4, the limit frequency f g is increased by 200 Hz in each case.
- the two measures mentioned - gradual reduction or incremental increase in the cutoff frequency - can of course also be combined.
- the reduction or the shift of the limit frequency in dependence on the output voltage of the voltage source can also take place on the basis of a continuous characteristic, as illustrated in FIGS. 4 and 5.
- FIG. 4 when the threshold value S1 is undershot, the attenuation of the low-frequency signal components increases linearly with a further decreasing output voltage until a threshold value S2 is reached at which the maximum attenuation (-8 dB in the exemplary embodiment) is set.
- 5 illustrates a linear relationship between the output voltage and the cut-off frequency, below which a signal reduction takes place.
- the maximum cutoff frequency is 1 kHz in the exemplary embodiment.
- FIG. 1 Another embodiment of the invention is illustrated in FIG.
- the electrical input signal generated by the microphone 10 is first fed to a filter bank 11.
- the hearing aid comprises the eight signal processing units 12A to 12H.
- the signals of the individual channels are combined in a summer 13 and finally converted via an earphone 14 into an electrical signal and fed to the eardrum of a user.
- the voltage supply of said components of the hearing aid device by means of a voltage source 15.
- the output voltage of the voltage source 15 is monitored by a voltage monitor 16. This provides when falling below a threshold directly an output signal to the handset 14 for the information of a user about a soon to be necessary replacement or soon necessary reloading the power source.
- the hearing aid according to the embodiment of FIG. 6, three switches 17A, 17B and 17C, by means of which the power supply of the signal processing units 12A, 12B and 12C can be interrupted.
- the signal processing unit 12A is associated with the frequency band 0 to 200 Hz
- the voltage supply is interrupted when the output voltage of the voltage source 15 of a first threshold value S1 is exceeded by opening the switch 17A by the voltage monitor 16. If the output voltage drops below a threshold value S2, the second switch 17B is also opened, thereby suppressing also the frequency band from 200 Hz to 400 Hz.
- the third frequency band 400 Hz to 800 Hz
- the invention provides a measure that can be implemented in different ways to effectively reduce power consumption. Although the sound image of the relevant hearing aid device is changed by the measure, the majority of the acoustic information remains understandable for the hearing aid wearer concerned. In particular, be Alarm signals continue to transmit with the necessary reinforcement for the hearing aid wearer.
Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a method for operating a hearing aid and a hearing aid with an input transducer, a signal processing unit, an output transducer, a voltage source and means for checking the state of charge of the voltage source.
Hearing aids are usually operated with a voltage source in the form of a battery or a rechargeable battery.
Despite the warning hearing aid wearers come again and again in situations in which - despite warning - a replacement of an empty battery or the recharging of a battery is no longer possible in time. It is therefore desirable to enable a kind of "emergency operation" with limited functionality of the hearing aid device over an extended period of time in the case of a voltage source that is about to run out.
From DE 199 41 859 C2 a hearing aid is known, which comprises means for checking the state of the voltage source. If the energy stored therein comes to an end, then the clock frequency is reduced by these means and the signal processing is converted into a restricted operating mode. For a limited time still a limited operation of the hearing aid with the voltage source used is possible.
Object of the present invention is to provide a simple feasible, alternative solution to the above problem.
The object is achieved in a hearing aid with an input transducer, a signal processing unit, an output transducer, a voltage source and means for checking the state of charge of the voltage source in that the hearing aid comprises means for lowering the low-frequency signal components in the acoustic output signal in response to the residual charge of the voltage source ,
- Detecting the state of charge of the voltage source,
- Lowering the low-frequency signal components in the acoustic output signal as a function of the state of charge.
In a hearing aid, an input signal is recorded by means of an input transducer and converted into an electrical input signal. Usually serves as an input transducer at least one microphone which receives an acoustic input signal. Modern hearing aids often comprise a microphone system with a plurality of microphones in order to achieve a direction dependent on the direction of arrival of acoustic signals reception, a directional characteristic. However, the input transducers may also include a telecoil or antenna for receiving electromagnetic input signals. For example, a hearing aid may be connected to a so-called "MLX module" in the form of an audio shoe for wireless reception of a signal transmitted from an external device. The input signals converted by the input transducer into electrical input signals are for further processing and amplification fed to a signal processing unit. The further processing and amplification takes place to compensate for the individual hearing loss of a hearing aid wearer, as a rule, as a function of the signal frequency. The signal processing unit outputs an electrical output signal, which is fed via an output transducer to the hearing of the hearing aid wearer, so that the latter perceives the output signal as an acoustic signal. As output transducers usually listeners are used, which generate an acoustic output signal. However, output transducers for generating mechanical vibrations are also known, which directly excite certain parts of the ear, such as the ossicles, to vibrate. Furthermore, output transducers are known which directly stimulate neurons of the ear.
The invention has the advantage that the lowering of the low-frequency signal components with respect to the higher-frequency signal components in the acoustic output signal is a technically easy to implement procedure. In contrast to a change in the clock frequency of a digital hearing aid, which entails a number of other measures (adaptation of the transfer function, adaptation of filter parameters, etc.), no further adjustments to the signal processing are required when lowering the low frequencies. Nevertheless, the vast majority of the input signals remain understandable. The latter is often no longer the case, in particular with a broadband gain reduction. Furthermore, the bass reduction does not lead to a deterioration of the harmonic distortion. The hearing aid wearer hears the majority of acoustic input signals with the amplification needed for him.
The measure according to the invention only leads to a sound shift. In particular, the invention has little effect on the transmission of acoustic signals which are of importance to the hearing aid wearer. These are, for example, hearing aid-internally or externally generated warning signals.
In particular, the hearing aid wearer can thus continue to hear the internally generated warning signal for warning of a voltage source that is about to run out in the amplification required for it. In this case, the warnings are preferably carried out at regular intervals by means of voice output and comprise a time estimate with respect to the duration for which the restricted operation according to the invention can still be maintained.
A reduction of low-frequency signal components in the acoustic output signal reduces the power consumption of the hearing aid by up to 80%. From the time of accessing the measure according to the invention, so that up to five times longer remaining time is possible than would be the case without energy-saving measures.
In the invention, mechanical means for lowering the low-frequency signal components may be provided in the acoustic output signal. Thus, for example, to lower the depths by means of a small drive automatically a sound channel can be shortened or narrowed. Preferably, however, in a hearing aid according to the invention, electronic means are used for lowering low-frequency signal components in the acoustic output signal. These are in particular filter means, which can preferably be adapted to different boundary conditions by means of corresponding filter parameters.
The measures according to the invention are advantageously always taken when the residual charge of the voltage source used falls below a certain threshold value. This threshold is preferably, e.g. during programming of the hearing aid, adjustable.
A development of the invention provides several different threshold values with respect to the residual charge of the voltage source used and a lowering of the low-frequency signal components in several stages. For example, a drop in the output voltage of the voltage source below a certain threshold by 20 mV each leads to a lowering of the low-frequency signal components of 2 dB each.
A further embodiment of the invention provides, with further decreasing output voltage of the voltage source, a shift of the cutoff frequency, below which a signal reduction takes place.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the lowering of the low-frequency signal components or the shift of the cutoff frequency, below which a reduction takes place, not in stages, but continuously with decreasing output voltage of the voltage source. The associated gradual lowering of the low-frequency signal components is thus barely noticed by the user at first.

The hearing aid according to the embodiment comprises as a special feature filter means 6 for lowering low-frequency signal components in the output signal. In this case, the filter means 6 need not necessarily be between the
In one embodiment of the invention, several threshold values can be set in the
-6 dB.In an alternative embodiment of the invention, the lowering of low-frequency signal components of the output signal falls below the output voltage of a first threshold value S1 by a constant amount, for example -6 dB.
In order to reduce the current consumption as the voltage drop continues, however, the limit frequency f g is gradually increased in this exemplary embodiment, below which a signal reduction takes place. This procedure is illustrated in the diagram according to FIG. 3. When falling below the threshold value S1, initially only frequencies below 200 Hz are lowered. If the output voltage falls below the threshold value S2, signal components below 400 Hz are lowered in the output signal. Even with the threshold values S3 and S4, the limit frequency f g is increased by 200 Hz in each case.
Die maximale Grenzfrequenz liegt im Ausführungsbeispiel bei 1 kHz.The two measures mentioned - gradual reduction or incremental increase in the cutoff frequency - can of course also be combined. Furthermore, the reduction or the shift of the limit frequency in dependence on the output voltage of the voltage source can also take place on the basis of a continuous characteristic, as illustrated in FIGS. 4 and 5. Thus, according to FIG. 4, when the threshold value S1 is undershot, the attenuation of the low-frequency signal components increases linearly with a further decreasing output voltage until a threshold value S2 is reached at which the maximum attenuation (-8 dB in the exemplary embodiment) is set. 5 illustrates a linear relationship between the output voltage and the cut-off frequency, below which a signal reduction takes place. The maximum cutoff frequency is 1 kHz in the exemplary embodiment.
Another embodiment of the invention is illustrated in FIG. In contrast to the exemplary embodiment according to FIG. 1, the electrical input signal generated by the
As a special feature, the hearing aid according to the embodiment of FIG. 6, three
The invention provides a measure that can be implemented in different ways to effectively reduce power consumption. Although the sound image of the relevant hearing aid device is changed by the measure, the majority of the acoustic information remains understandable for the hearing aid wearer concerned. In particular, be Alarm signals continue to transmit with the necessary reinforcement for the hearing aid wearer.
