Description

Method and set of testing equipment for assessment of electric parameters of lightning protection systems
The object of this invention is the method and a set of testing equipment for the assessment of electric parameters of lightning protection systems.
The lightning protection of building structures is realized by means of conventional systems consisting of electric conductor laid on the outlines of the protected facility and earthed metal spike, or by means of lightning arresters provided with active heads seated on a pipe mast. The purpose of those heads is to accelerate the creation of bottom-up channel with ionized air to enable the extension of protected area compared to conventional protective system. The commonly known method of assessment of technical efficiency of a lightning protection system consists in external visual inspection, usually with the use of field-glasses. This method permits only a general determination of the scope of any mechanical damage to active head and, when it is impossible to make a specific determination, a verification of the state of damage and head suitability for further use may only be possible after it is dismounted from mast and checked on a test stand, and is usually performed by manufacturer of such systems.
Also known are mobile units permitting a check of a lightning protection system upon previous dismounting of active head or by applying a suitable probe to head spike. However, performing such inspection is very cumbersome and expensive, especially in the case of lightning arrester installed on church tower, tank or mast which, as a rule, are difficult to access.
The purpose of this invention is to develop a method and equipment for periodic evaluation of the efficiency of the lightning systems, especially those with active heads, or evaluation of a system right after lightning stroke.
The essence of the method of conducting the evaluation of electric parameters of lightning protection system, in particular its head, of the invention, consist in that at least one inspection wire, connected electrically to tester unit, is additionally mounted to lightning arrester head, equipped with grounding conductor, then the testing arrangement of the unit is activated by applying low control voltage between earthing conductor and inspection wire, or between inspection wires only, to control the electric energy stored in the set of capacitors and supplied to permanent contacts of those conductor wires, connected also to the tested elements of lightning-arrester head, and then the information obtained on the electrical parameters of the conductors is transmitted by these conductors to the testing unit, either mounted directly to lightning arrester head or located at some further distance from the head and coupled electrically to its earthing conductor and to inspection wire. The measurement of technical and service parameters of the lightning-arrester head is carried out only when the tester unit is in the state of electrical conducting. The measurement of technical and service parameters of the lightning-arrester head is also carried out after coupling the tester unit with current measuring element in the earthing conductor and, on the basis of this information, an automatic assessment of these parameters is performed. In turn, the set of testing equipment for the assessment of electric parameters of lightning protection systems of this invention consists characteristically of tester unit provided with a probe and a socket, installed in lightning-arrester head, containing a connector with earthing conductor of the lightning protection system and with inspection wire, whereas the tester unit has a set of capacitors that store electric energy and are electrically connected with the inspection wire and with electro-mechanical system provided with moving element with measuring contacts opposing fixed contacts of these conducting wires electrically connected with tested elements of the lightning-arrester head. In a state of normal functioning of lightning protection system the tester unit does not conduct electric current while during testing of the lightning protection system it is in a state of electric current conducting, whereas the system has at least one inspection wire going outward from it. Preferably, the connector socket is mounted on, or in, the mast of lightning-arrester head and two or more inspection wires are connected to the set of capacitors. During testing of lightning-arrester head elements the tester unit probe is located in the socket of the connector of earthing conductor and inspection wire, while measuring contacts of this unit are located in its fixed contacts. Also, preferably, the electromagnetic system consists of electro-magnet or electric motor and, during testing of lightning-arrester head elements, the electromagnetic system is supplied from outside through inspection wire and earthing conductor or through inspection wires only.
The basic advantage of the method and equipment unit of this invention is the possibility to perform a remote testing of lightning-arrester head without the need for direct intervention on the head. The testing unit may be installed fixed to lightning protection system and testing may performed periodically, or directly after a lightning stroke, and the relevant information may be transmitted for as up to 1000 meter.
The object of the invention is presented in examples of its embodiment in the drawing, where Fig. 1 presents the block diagram of the unit for testing electric parameters of lightning arrester head, electrically coupled with this head and, Fig. 2 is a diagram of protected facility equipped with lightning protection system.
A set of tester equipment consists of tester unit 1 equipped with probe 2 and socket 3 mounted in lightning arrester head 4, containing a connector with earthing conductor 5 and inspection wire 6. Said tester unit I consists of set of capacitors 7 that store electric energy and are electrically connected with the inspection wire 6 and with electro-mechanical system 8, provided with moving element 9 with measuring contacts H) opposing fixed contacts jj, of the earthing conductor 4 and inspection wire 6 electrically connected with tested elements 12 of the lightning-arrester head 4, for example with its electrical coil, spark gap and its other elements. In other examples of embodiment not shown in the drawing, a set of testing equipment is equipped with several inspection wires 6, the electro-mechanical system 8 has electric motor or mechanical tension member and is supplied from
90 external unit through two or more inspection wires 6, whereas the socket 3 of the connector of conductors 5 and 6 is installed in, or on, mast 13.
The method of testing of lightning arrester head 4, installed on pipe mast 13 earthed with conductor 5 located on protected facility .14, wherein at least one inspection wire 6 is/are additionally mounted to lightning arrester head 4 and
95 connected, together with said earthing conductor 5 to lightning protection system through socket 3 and probe 2 to its tester unit 1, and then the probe 2 is used to apply low voltage of the range within several to few scores of volts between these conductors/wires. Applying of low voltage causes activation of tester unit 1 and supplying of electrical energy stored in the set of capacitors 7
100 to electro-mechanical system 8, which causes a shift of the movable element 9 with the measuring contacts 10 towards fixed contacts lj_ electrically connected with tested elements 12 of lightning arrester head 4.
Once the contacts 10 and H are connected, the information on actual electrical parameters 12 of elements 12 of the lightning arrester head 4 is
105 transmitted through set of capacitors 7 along inspection wire 6 and earthing conductor 5 to memory and to display of tester unit 1, where a reading of test results is taken. Once the testing is finished the moving measuring contacts 10 return to the non-conducting initial position of the unit. The conducting and non-conducting states of the tester unit I is realized only by connecting and
110 disconnecting the measuring contacts _10 of the unit to or from the fixed contacts JT connected with tested elements 12.
The reading of checked parameters of lightning arrester head 4 is done with the use of tester unit I mounted permanently to the head or with a mobile tester unit.
