- the image beam that exits from the micromirror display device 1 is the parallel beam that is reflected in the front surface direction by the micromirrors that are inclined in the one inclined direction or slightly diffused beam, and the convex surface and the concave surface of the meniscus lens 14 has the curvature which allows the image beam that has exited from the micromirror display device 1 to enter the projection system optical member 15 as the substantially parallel beam or slightly converged beam.
- the illumination beam proj ected from the light source system optical member 2 is corrected into the substantially parallel beam which follows the direction inclined at the predetermined angle relative to the front surface direction of the micromirror display device 1, and the substantially parallel beam so corrected is made to transmit through the cover glass 13 so as to enter the micro irorr display device 1.
- the image beam which is the part of the beam reflected by the plurality of micromirrors of the micromirror display device 1 which is reflected in the front surface direction by the micromirrors which are inclined in the one inclined direction, transmits through the cover glass 13 again, and enters the projection system optical member 15 via the meniscus lens 14 so as to be projected onto the projection surface, as shown in Figs. 3A and 4, whereas the beam reflected in the oblique direction by the micromirrors inclined in the other inclined direction transmits again the cover glass 13 and exits in an obliquely deviating direction from the projection system optical member 15 via the meniscus lens 14, as shown in Figs.
- the convex surface and concave surface of the meniscus lens 14 are made to be surfaces having the curvature which allows the image beam that has exited from the micromirror display device 1 (the parallel beam that has been reflected by the micromirros inclined in the one inclined direction) to enter the projection system optical member 15 as the substantially parallel beam, the image beam can be projected onto the projection surface without being lost at the projection system optical member 15.
- the image beam that has left the micromirror display device 1 and which is to enter the projection system optical member 15 via the meniscus lens 14 is made to enter the projection system optical member 15 as a light beam having a divergence or convergence angle of a certain magnitude relative to the substantially parallel beam that has exited the micromirror display device 1, part of the beam that has so entered is refracted in a direction which deviates from the projecting direction of the image beam by the incident side and exit side lenses 21, 22, 23 of the projection system optical member 15, and a certain light loss is caused due to the beam so refracted being absorbed by the inner circumferential surface of the lens barrel 16 of the projection system optical member 15.
- the aforesaid illumination beam can be projected onto the projection surface without any light loss at the projection system optical member 15.
- the image beam that has departed from the micromirror display device 1 is made to enter the projection system optical member 15 while being refracted to some extent, while it is difficult to correct the image beam which transmits through the meniscus lens 14 so as to enter the projection system optical member 15, in the event that the image beam which transmits through the meniscus lens 14 so as to enter the projection system optical member 15 is the substantially parallel beam or a beam close to a parallel beam, the aforesaid illumination beam can be projected onto the projection surface without any light loss at the projection system optical member 15.
- the beam which is reflected in the oblique direction by the micromirrors directed in the other inclined direction of the micromirror display device 1 can be made to exit while it remains substantially as a parallel beam, and consequently, the area of the light absorbing body, not shown, for absorbing the beam may remain small.
- the entirety of the part of the illumination beam projected from the light source system optical member 12 which has been surface reflected by the concave surface of the meniscus lens 14 which faces the light source system optical member 2 and the projection system optical member 15 is made to exit in a direction deviating obliquely relative to the exit direction of the image beam which is reflected in the front surface direction of the micromirror display device 1 via the meniscus lens 14, as shown in Figs .3C and 6.
- the beam that has entered the incident side end face of the lens barrel 16 of the projection system optical member 15, that is, the light that has entered the incident side end faces of the fixed lens barrel 17 and the incident side movable lens barrel 18 is absorbed by the end surfaces of both the fixed lens barrel 17 and the incident side movable lens 18.
- the beam that has entered the lens barrel 16 is refracted by the plurality of incident side lens 21 within the incident side movable lens barrel 18 in a direction in which an angle relative to the lens optical axis 0 2 increases to thereby be absorbed by the inner circumferential surface of the fixed lens barrel 17 and an inner circumferential surface of a portion of the fixed lens barrel 17 which is situated between the incident side movable lens barrel 18 and the first exit side movable lens barrel 19.
- the beam that has been refracted by the incident side lenses 21 within the incident side movable lens barrel 18 the absorbing position of the beam that has departed from the departure end of the incident side movable lens barrel
- the incident side movable lens barrel 18 enters a lens support portion provided at an intermediate portion along the barrel length of the inner circumferential surface of the first exit side movable lens barrel 19 as shown in Fig. 6 in such a manner as to erect therefrom to thereby be absorbed thereat. Consequently, as the incident side movable lens barrel 18 is separated apart from the first exit side movable lens barrel 19, the beam that has exited from the exit end of the incident side movable lens barrel 18 enters the inner circumferential surface of the fixed lens barrel 17 closer to the incident end than the lens supporting portion of the first exit side movable lens 19 and the inner circumferential surface of the portion of the fixed lens barrel 17 which is situated between the incident side movable lens barrel 18 and the first exit side movable lens barrel 19 to thereby absorbed thereat.
- the meniscus lens 14 disposed on the front surface side of the micromirror display device 1 has the characteristic to make the beam of the illumination beam from the light source system optical member 2 which is surface reflected by the concave surface of the meniscus lens 14 which faces the light source system optical member 2 and the proj ection system optical member 15 exit in the direction in which the beam does not enter the exit side lenses 22, 23 of the plurality of lenses 21, 22, 23 of the projection system optical member 15, the surface reflected beam by the meniscus lens 14 can be prevented from being projected onto the projection surface by the projection system optical member 15 in an ensured fashion.
- the meniscus lens 14 preferably makes part of the beam that has been surface reflected by the surface thereof which faces the light source system optical member 2 and the proj ection system optical member 15 which part is directed toward the projection system optical member 15 exit at the angle at which the part of the beam is refracted by the incident side lens 21 of the projection system optical member 15 in the direction in which the same part does not enter the exit side lenses 22, 23 of the projection system optical member 15, and according to the construction, the surface reflected beam by the meniscus lens 14 can be prevented from being projected onto the projection surface by the projection system optical member 15 in an ensured fashion.
- the plurality of lenses 21, 22, 23 which constitute the projection system optical member 15 are disposed within the lens barrel 16 having the light absorbing property which is made up of the fixed lens barrel 17 and the incident side movable lens barrel 18 and the first and second exit side movable lens barrels 19, 29 which are provided in the interior of the fixed lens barrel 17, the fixed lens barrel 17, the incident side movable lens barrel 18 and the first and second exit side movable lens barrel 19, 20 being all made up of molded products from black resin.
- the lens 23 disposed nearest the exit end may be made up of a lens which has an effective area thereof, that is, an area having the lens function to project the incident light toward the projection surface on an area thereof excluding a circumferential portion, and the circumferential portion may not have the lens function.
- the part of the beam is made to exit in directions other than the direction toward the projection surface.
- the meniscus lens 14 may only have to have the characteristic for making the beam that has been surface reflected on the concave surface thereof which faces the light source system optical member 2 and the projection system optical member 15 exit in the direction in which the beam does not enter the effective area of at least the lens 23 of the projection system optical member 15 which is disposed nearest the exit end thereof, that is the characteristic for making part of the beam that has been surface reflected by the concave surface exit at the angle at which the part of the beam is refracted in the direction in which the part of the beam does not enter the effective area of the lens 23 disposed nearest the exit end of the projection system optical member by the incident lens 21 of the same optical system. According to the construction, it is possible to ensure the prevention of projection of the surface reflected beam that is reflected by the meniscus lens 14 onto the projection surface by the projection system optical member 15.
- the lens barrel 16 of the projection system optical member 15 or the fixed lens barrel 17 and the incident side movable lens barrel 18 and the first and second exit side movable lens barrels 19, 20 which are provided in the interior of the fixed lens barrel 17 are made to be constituted by molded products from black resin, respectively, a light absorbing treatment may be applied to the inner circumferential surfaces of the lens barrels 17, 18, 19, 20 such as a light absorbing paint being applied to or a light absorbing material being planted in those barrels, provided that the inner circumferential surfaces are allowed to maintain the light absorbing property.
- the lens barrel 16 may be constructed such that an annular stop wall for allowing image beams directed toward the projection surface to transmit therethrough but image beams directed toward other directions to be absorbed thereat is provided at a single or a plurality of locations on the inner circumferential surfaces of the incident side movable lens barrel 18 and the first and second exit side movable lens barrels 19, 20 and the inner circumferential surface of the portion of the fixed lens barrel 17 which is situated between the incident side movable lens barrel 18 and the first exit side movable lens barrell9.
- the relay lens 14 constituted by the meniscus lens is disposed on the front surface side of the micromirror display device 1
- the relay lens that is disposed on the front surface side of the micromirror display device 1 may be constituted by, for example, a planoconvex lens which is formed into a flat surface on a side thereof which faces the light source system optical member 2 and the projection system optical member 15 and is formed into a convex surface on a side thereof which faces the reflection display device, provided that the planoconvex lens corrects the illumination beam that has entered from the surface which faces the light source system optical member 2 and the projection system optical member 15 into the parallel beam which follows the direction inclined at the predetermined angle relative to the front surface direction of the reflection display device so as to make the parallel beam so corrected enter the reflection display device 1, makes the image beam that has exited from the reflection display device 1 enter the projection system optical member 15 and makes part of the illumination beam from the light source system optical member 2 that has been surface reflected on the surface which faces
- the light source system optical member 2 is constructed such that the illumination beam that is projected from the light source portion 3 and which is then made to transmit through the light-guiding rod 6, the color wheel 7 and the light source system lens unit 19 so as to be reflected by the mirror 12 to be thereby allowed to enter the micromirror display devicel
- the light source system optical member 2 may be constructed such that the illumination beam that is projected from the light source portion 3 and which is then made to transmit through the light-guiding rod 6, the color wheel 7 and the light source system lens unit 19 is projected directly onto the micromirror display device 1.
- the color wheel 7 of the light source system optical member 2 is disposed on the exit end of the light-guiding rod 6, the color wheel 7 may be disposed at any other position, provided that the position where the color wheel 7 is disposed is situated within an optical path extending from the light source portion 3 to the entrance side of the projection system optical member 15.
- the cover glass 13 is disposed in front of the micromirror display device 1 and the relay lens 14 is disposed in front of the cover glass 13 so disposed, the cover glass 13 may be omitted.
- the reflection display device is not limited to the micromirror display device and for example, a reflection liquid crystal display device (an active matrix liquid crystal display device or a simple matrix liquid crystal display device) may be used which is provided a reflection membrane on a rear side thereof, provided that the display device has a plurality of pixels which are arranged in a matrix, whereby the reflection of a light that has entered from the front surface of the device is controlled by the plurality of pixels so arranged so as to project an image beam forward.
- a reflection liquid crystal display device an active matrix liquid crystal display device or a simple matrix liquid crystal display device
- the reflection liquid crystal display device is preferably constructed such that a beam that has entered from an incident direction inclined in one direction relative to the front direction thereof and which is then made to transmit a liquid crystal layer so as to be reflected on the reflection membrane is refracted by a prism or the like so as to be made to depart in the front direction.
- the liquid crystal device may be a color display device provided with a color filter having a plurality of or three colors such as red, green and blue, and in the event that the color display device is used, the color wheel 7 of the light source system optical member may be omitted, whereby a white illumination beam is constructed so as to be projected from the light source system optical member 2 onto the color display device at all times.
