Abstract

Bag packaging method for use in flooding, the method utilizing a bag that is self-expanding when it comes into contact with water to be used in emergency situations where containment bags that can hold back floods caused by watercourses, atmospheric events or the deterioration / subsidence / malfunctioning of machinery or structures need to be put into immediate use. The bag comprises an outer permeable bag which receives a soluble container having super-absorbent polymer.

Description

    SCOPE OF INVENTION
  • This invention refers to a bag that can increase its own volume and weight when immersed in water because of a special polymer inside. This makes it useful in emergency situations where containment bags that can hold back floods caused by watercourses, atmospheric events or the deterioration /subsidence / malfunctioning of machinery or structures need to be put into immediate use.
  • BACKGROUND TO INVENTION
  • At present, there is a product on the market that consists of an outer covering made of jute containing a water-absorbent substance that increases its volume and weight when it comes into contact with water and inflates the container bag. This product is based on the properties of some synthetic polymers that bind with water molecules when they come into contact with water and increase in volume and weight according to the quantity of liquid absorbed, the time they remains in contact with the liquid and their absorption capacity. The faults/limits of this commercially available product are as follows:
  • a) contents are easily dispersed when the polymer, that has the same consistency as sand, is placed in a jute bag with a loosely-woven warp and weft. This dispersal impairs the ability of the bag to expand quickly when it comes into contact with water.
  • b) water is absorbed slowly and the bag expands slowly if, in order to prevent what has been described in point a) occurring, the polymer is packed in a paper bag. Although this resolves the problem of dispersal of the material, it slows down the absorption rate and expansion of the bag as a result.
  • c) limits to the resistance of jute covering in some cases where use in severe conditions requires materials that are more resistant but are at the same time water permeable.
  • d) type and quality of polymer contained, since the choice of product directly affects the quantity of water absorbed by the bag and the absorption rate and the characteristics of the polymer vary according to the product used.

  • BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF INVENTION
  • As a result, the main purpose of this invention is to supply a bag that can increase its own volume and weight when immersed in water because of a special polymer inside. This makes it useful in emergency situations where containment bags that can stop flooding caused by watercourses, atmospheric events or the deterioration / subsidence / malfunctioning of machinery or structures need to be put into immediate use. It provides the following solutions to the problems listed in points a), b), c) and d) associated with the products that are commercially available at present:
  • A) a special container is used to avoid dispersal of the polymer in the bag. It consists of a small bag that dissolves almost immediately in water that guarantees that the same quantity of polymer remains in the bag indefinitely and is immediately released when it comes into contact with water.
  • B) as far as the outer covering is concerned, in addition to jute bags, bags made of different materials have been tested and have proved to be equally effective and adaptable to different situations. A bag made of polypropylene, in particular, is highly permeable and more resistant than jute bags.
  • C) the most absorbent and granular polymers are used in the absorbent polymer category according to their specific use.
  • PRODUCT PACKAGING METHOD
  • 1) The polymer that belongs to the "super-absorbent" category is weighed and the quantity to be placed inside the first covering determined according to: i)the required filling level of the bag, ii) the size of the container, iii) the speed with which maximum volume is reached
  • 2) the quantity of polymer is then placed in a water-soluble flexible container
  • 3) the water-soluble flexible container is sealed
  • 4) the water-soluble flexible container is placed in the permeable outer "bag" container
  • 5) the outer container is then closed
  • 6) the final product is packaged according to the required quantities and/or characteristics.

Claims (5)

  1. Packaging method of bags for use in floods involving the insertion of a i) hermetic, ii) water-soluble, iii) eco-compatible container in a general bag used in emergencies.
  2. Packaging method of bags for use in floods, as in the previous claim, involving the insertion of "super-absorbent" polymers in the hermetic container.
  3. Packaging method of bags for use in floods, as in the previous claims, characterized by the quantity of polymer determined according to i) the required filling level of the bag, ii) the size of the container, iii) the speed with which maximum volume is reached.
  4. Packaging method of bags for use in floods, as in the previous claims, with characteristics that allow a finished product to be produced and suitably packaged to withstand internal and external stresses.
  5. Packaging method of bags for use in floods, as in the previous claims, with characteristics that allow a finished product to be packaged according to the required quantities and characteristics.
