  • The invention relates to a portion capsule with ground coffee for producing a coffee beverage according to the preamble of claim 1.
  • Portion capsules of this kind are known in many variants, with portion capsules for producing espresso coffee in particular being known. The basic advantage of such capsules is that they are gas-tight and the coffee powder is included in the capsule with the exclusion of oxygen. This keeps the coffee powder in the capsule fresh for a long time. For brewing the coffee powder contained in the capsule, both manual, semi-automatic and fully automatic espresso coffee machines are used. In the manual coffee machines, the capsule is usually inserted into a capsule holder, which is then manually attached to the coffee machine. In the semi-automatic coffee machines, the capsule is inserted into a capsule carrier or directly into the brewing chamber, the latter subsequently being closed by means of a central, manually operated lever. In fully automatic coffee machines, however, the capsule is removed from a magazine, then automatically fed to the brewing chamber and ejected after brewing or extracting without action by the user in a collection container. All three of these types of coffee machines generally have a provided with radial outlet openings for the introduction of brewing water brooder, which is designed to pierce the bottom or lid of the capsule.   • Although great efforts have been made to provide the finished coffee on the surface with a durable foam layer, in some countries there is an increasing desire to be able to produce conventional coffee in the sense of a filter coffee with generic portion capsules.
  • From the US2003 / 172813 a generic portion capsule is known in which a substance extractable by water for the preparation of a beverage, preferably an espresso coffee, is added. In this case, a sieve-like member is arranged between the capsule bottom and the substance, or between the capsule lid, the capsule bottom and the substance, which is provided with a plurality of axial openings. The respective organ is provided with embossings directed against the capsule bottom or the capsule lid, so that fluid channels are formed between the respective organ and the capsule bottom or the capsule lid. In these fluid channels, the brewing water can spread over the capsule cross-section, or collect the brewed coffee beverage. In order to prevent that the respective organ is pierced with the piercing of the capsule, the respective organ has a central, directed against the capsule interior recess into which the piercing means may extend after piercing the bottom or the lid. Although such a portion capsule is very well suited for the production of espresso coffee, it is not predestined for the production of filter coffee, since the capsule opposes the flow of brewing water high resistance, which virtually inevitably leads to foaming.
  • From the EP 0 326 685 is known as a disposable article, called brewing chamber known container which is collapsible and at the bottom of a filter bag with tea or ground coffee is glued. The container is preferably made of paper, cardboard or the like. The bottom of the container is provided below the filter bag with a drain opening, through which the liquid coffee can flow. In a preferred embodiment of the container, the drain opening is closed on the outside by means of a peelable film. Such a container is suitable for use in a conventional one Filter coffee machine, however, it can not be used together with an espresso coffee machine.
  • The invention aims to develop a portion capsule such that it can be used in a conventional espresso coffee machine to produce with her a conventional coffee beverage, which has no appreciable foam layer on the surface and in taste corresponds to a conventional filter coffee.
  • For this purpose, a portion capsule according to claim 1 is provided according to the invention.
  • By providing at least the capsule bottom with a passage formed by a recess intended to prevent hydraulic build-up of pressure during brewing and extraction of the coffee received in the capsule, the basic requirement is established to make a coffee with such a portion capsule in a conventional espresso coffee machine produce, which corresponds in appearance and taste to a standard filter coffee. The passage ensures that the forcibly supplied brewing water can not generate any appreciable pressure build-up in the capsule. Thus, the brewing water can flow without much resistance through the capsule together with the coffee powder received therein, whereby foaming can be successfully prevented. In order to prevent the coffee powder received in the capsule from escaping via the passage from the capsule or being washed out together with the extraction medium-brewing water-a filter element is arranged between the passage and the coffee powder received in the capsule. In order to ensure a good shelf life of the coffee powder received in the capsule despite the passage, the passage is closed by means of a gas-tight film. The latter is either manually removable or designed such that it can easily be pierced by a piercing means.

  • The portion capsule according to Fig. 1 consists of a cup-shaped lower part 1, a lower filter element 2, an upper distributor element 3 and a cover 4. The coffee powder to be accommodated between the filter element 2 and the distributor element 3 in the lower part 1 can not be seen from this illustration. The filter element 2 and the distributor 3 are dimensionally stable and formed substantially plate-shaped and preferably produced by deep drawing.
  • The upwardly conically slightly widening lower part 1 is provided in the upper region with a circumferential shoulder 5, which forms an annular shoulder 5a on the inside, which serves to support the upper distributor element 3. On the upper side, the cup has a peripheral edge 6, on which the cover 4 is fixed-preferably welded-on. As indicated schematically, the bottom of the cup is provided with a circular recess 20 for forming a passage 22 which is covered by a film 21. The film 21 has a tab L, which projects beyond the cup 1 side and allows manual removal of the film 21. The cup 1, the lid 4 as well as the film 21 are made of a gas-tight multi-layer composite material, wherein the lower part 1 in comparison to the lid 4 and the film 21 is relatively stiff, dimensionally stable, elastic and tough. After the closure of the recess 20 with the film 21 and the welding of the lid 4 with the lower part 1, the capsule and thus its contents are hermetically sealed. All of these films preferably have at least one gas-tight layer and a layer of a thermoplastic polymer. Layers from one thermoplastic polymer can be easily welded together, for example by means of heat or ultrasound.
  • The substantially plate-shaped filter element 2 is provided with a peripheral edge 11 and has a plurality of circular ring segment shaped embossments 9, which rise above the underside of the filter element 2. When the filter element 2 is inserted into the cup 1, the embossments 9 are laterally of the recess 20 at the bottom of the cup 1, so that between the embossings 9 and the cup base collecting channels 17 are formed, which extends radially outwardly from the axis of symmetry as well extend circularly about the axis of symmetry. Outside the embossments 9 in the region of the liquid channels 17, the filter element 2 is provided with a plurality of openings 8. In the center of the filter element 2, a central, directed against the capsule interior recess 10 is arranged, which is conical.
  • The upper distributor element 3 likewise has a multiplicity of embossings 13 designed in the form of a circular ring segment, which protrude as elevations over the upper side of the distributor element 3. The distribution element 3 is provided with a circumferential on the outside, downwardly directed web 16. Through these embossings 13 3 liquid channels 18 are formed on the upper side of the distribution element, which extend radially outwardly from the axis of symmetry and circularly about the axis of symmetry around. Outside of the embossments 13, in the region of the fluid channels 18, in turn, a plurality of openings 14 is provided. In the center of the distributor element 3, in turn, a central recess 15 directed against the capsule interior is arranged, which is of conical design. On the outside, the distribution element 3 is provided with an annular surface 19, which is raised relative to the fluid channels 18 and is substantially aligned with the upper side of the embossments 13.
  • When inserting the upper distribution element 3, this is supported by the web 16 on the circumferential shoulder 5a of paragraph 5 of the cup 1 from. When introducing brewing water for preparing a coffee beverage, the upper distributor element 3 serves, in particular, for uniformly distributing the brewing water over the entire capsule cross-section, while the lower filter element 2 in particular for the escape of To prevent coffee powder from the capsule.   • In order to achieve as uniform a distribution of the brewing water and a uniform flow of coffee powder received in the capsule with respect to the capsule cross-section, both in the distribution element 3 as well as in the filter element 2 recessed openings 14, 8 evenly distributed over the respective surface. The total cross section of the openings 14 embedded in the distributor element 2 is at least 3%, preferably at least 5% of the average capsule cross section. This ratio also applies to the filter element 2. By means of this design it can be ensured that the brewing water flows through the distribution element 3 into the capsule without appreciable resistance, and that the brewed coffee beverage can also escape from the capsule via the filter element 2 without appreciable resistance. The recess 20 in the bottom 7 of the capsule also ensures that neither at the beginning nor during the Aufbrühvorgangs a hydraulic pressure build-up in the capsule takes place. With this configuration, the formation of a foam layer on the finished coffee beverage can be reliably prevented.
  • Nevertheless, the openings in the distribution or filter element 2, 3 should not be so large that the ground coffee can escape from the capsule. For this purpose, the average diameter of a single opening 8, 14 is chosen smaller than the statistical average of the diameter of a single particle of ground coffee. To counterbalance the brewing water on the part of the coffee powder too much flow resistance, the coffee taken in the capsule is ground relatively coarse. The arithmetic mean of the diameter of a particle in the present case is between 400 and 600 μm.
  • Preferably, the film 21 has a different color than the capsule. The color of the film can be chosen differently depending on the contents of the capsule, for example. As variable parameters are mentioned, for example, the amount, the mixture, the roasting and the degree of grinding of the coffee powder.
  • FIG. 2 shows a longitudinal section through the capsule according to Fig. 1 , wherein the portion capsule is filled with coffee powder KP. The coffee powder KP is enclosed between the lower filter element 2 and the upper distribution element 3 in the capsule.   • After the film 21 is removed, the capsule may be fed to a brewing chamber (not shown). Via the openings 8 in the lower filter element 2, the brewed beverage reaches the underside of the filter element 2 and flows out through the passage 22 formed by the recess 20 from the capsule, from where it is forwarded via means not shown in detail to a beverage outlet. By providing distribution or filter elements 2, 3 designed in this way, it is ensured that the beverage particles received in the capsule are flowed through homogeneously by the brewing water and a uniform extraction of the entire coffee powder is achieved. The embossments 9, 13 are in any case distributed such that the respective element 2, 3 is supported on the capsule base 7 or capsule cover 4 in a planar manner. By this planar support ensures that the fluid channels 17, 18 forming free spaces between the capsule cover 4 and the distributor member 3 are maintained even when acting on the outside of the capsule pressure.
  • The diameter of the openings 8, 14 embedded in the distributor or filter element 2, 3 is preferably smaller than the statistical diameter of a single particle (coffee grain) for producing a beverage, preferably smaller than x-σ, where the x is the arithmetic mean of the Diameter and under σ the standard deviation is to be understood. This ensures that virtually no particles escape from the capsule or be flushed out, regardless of how large the piercing opening is.

  • While the cup-like capsule part 1a is relatively stiff, dimensionally stable, elastic and tough, the film 21a is thinner in comparison and also has a lower elasticity, extensibility and tear strength. This ensures that the film 21a quickly breaks and breaks under the force of a piercing.
  • So that the film 21 can be kept relatively thin, it is constructed in two layers. The combination of a layer of a thermoplastic polymer with a layer of aluminum has proven to be particularly advantageous. In particular, polypropylene or polyethylene are suitable as the thermoplastic polymer. Single-portion capsule according to one of Claims 3 to 22, characterized in that the inner face of the cup-like lower part (1a) is provided with a circumferential groove (27), and in that the filter element (2a) arranged between the through-passage (22a) and the coffee (KP) is provided with a rim (27) which is directed towards the inner face of the capsule and on its outer face is provided with a projection (28) which encircles it in an annular fashion and fixes the filter element (2a) in the groove (27) in a clamping fashion.
