Description

    Technical field of the invention
  • The invention relates to a follow-up fall arrest device used with a fixed safety rope, and comprising a body equipped with a retaining system arranged to occupy either an active locking position in case of a fall, or an inactive unlocking position allowing the progression of the user along the rope in the upward direction, or in the opposite direction during a controlled descent, said restraint system comprising:
    • a support arm articulated on a first axis of the body,
    • a blocking roller in the form of a cylindrical wheel mounted for free rotation on a second axis integral with the support arm,
    • and a centrifugal coupling arranged between a roller drive member and the support arm so as to occupy a disengaged or engaged position.
    State of the art
  • During the normal use of ascent or descent, the fall arrest devices follow the progression of the person along the rope without causing blockage. The person is free to move without any manual intervention to unblock the fall arrest device. The blocking occurs only in the event of a fall.
  • The restraint system of known fall arrest devices generally comprises a pivoting lever having at one end an attachment ring for connection to a harness, and at the opposite end a locking cam of the rope. Such an arrangement behaves like a cleat cam, which may prevent blocking if the user was to grip the lever in case of a fall.
  • WO 00/24471 relates to a bidirectional locking device for a fall arrest apparatus, comprising a locking member equipped with two cams independently actuated by a common locking member in response to a sudden change in weight. The locking of each of the cams depends on the inclination of the rope relative to the frame of the apparatus.
  • US 4923037 discloses a fall arrest device having a retaining system composed of an articulated support arm, which is equipped with a cylindrical wheel mounted free rotation, and a centrifugal mechanical coupling arranged in a pawl. The periphery of the wheel comprises a series of teeth constituting a pinion causing rotation of the wheel by friction effect with the cable. To insert the vertical lifeline in the fall arrest device, it is necessary to make use of an articulated U-shaped comer, and to rotate it outwards, which complicates maneuvers. The use of pin-shaped springs does not allow precise control of the locking threshold of the coupling.
  • Object of the invention
  • The object of the invention is to provide a fall arrest device for fixed rope, to obtain a precise locking threshold according to the speed or acceleration of the blocking roller.
  • The fall arrest device according to the invention is characterized in that the centrifugal coupling comprises at least one movable flyweight along a ramp of the drive member against a compression spring, and an interface linkage engaged within a cylindrical rim of the support arm for transmitting the elastic force of the spring to the weight.
  • During normal use of ascent or descent, the coupling is in the disengaged position, and the fall arrest device follows the progression of the person along the rope without any manual intervention of unlocking the restraint system. In the event of a fall, the blocking occurs automatically at a predetermined threshold. In this case, the coupling is in the engaged position causing a strong pressure of the roller against the rope.
  • According to a preferred embodiment, the weight is of cylindrical shape, and cooperates in the engaged position with the cylindrical rim of the support arm. The peripheral surface of the weight and the ramp of the drive member is advantageously striated, so as to form a rack.
  • Preferably, the centrifugal coupling comprises two flyweights and two compression springs arranged symmetrically with respect to the second axis of the roller.
  • Brief description of the drawings
  • Other advantages and features will emerge more clearly from the following description of an embodiment of the invention given by way of non-limiting example, and represented in the appended drawings in which:
    • Figure 1 is a perspective view of the fall arrest device according to the invention, which is installed on a lifeline after installation of a carabiner attachment;
    • Figure 2 shows an exploded perspective view of the fall arrest apparatus of Figure 1, after disassembly with respect to the rope;
    • Figure 3 is an exploded perspective view of the retaining member of the fall arrest device;
    • Figure 4 is a sectional view of the locking roller with the centrifugal coupling with clutch in the disengaged position;
    • Figures 5 and 6 are sectional views along lines LL and GG of Figure 4;
    • Figure 7 is an identical view of Figure 4 in the engaged position of the coupling for locking in case of a fall.
    Description of a preferred embodiment
  • In Figures 1 to 7, a fall arrest device 10 is used for the safety of a person moving along a fixed rope 12 insurance. A carabiner 14 is hooked to the fall arrest device 10 so as to be connected to the harness, either directly or via an absorption lanyard. During the normal use of ascent or descent, the fall arrest device 10 follows the progression of the person along the rope 12 without causing blockage. The person is then free to move without any manual intervention to unblock the fall arrest device 10.
  • The fall arrest device 10 is composed of a rigid body 16, and a movable retaining member 18 cooperating with the rope 12 to occupy either an active locking position in the event of a fall or an inactive unlocking position in the direction of climb, or in the opposite direction during a controlled descent. The body 16, which is preferably metallic, comprises a u-shaped straight channel 20 for the passage of the rope 12, and a stirrup 22 for mounting a first axis 24 extending transversely with respect to the direction of the chute 20 The upper part of the chute 20 is pierced by two holes 23 to allow the passage of the carabiner 14.
  • The retaining member 18 comprises a support arm 26 articulated on the first axis 24, and a wheel-shaped locking roller 28 mounted to rotate freely on a second axis 30 integral with the support arm 26. The peripheral surface of the blocking roller 28 is cylindrical, and is provided with a plurality of pins 32 each having a predetermined inclination with respect to the radial direction passing through the axis 30. A torsion spring 31 is threaded on the first axis 24, and urges the support arm 26 into position. direction of chute 20.
  • The blocking roller 28 is provided with an internal drive member 33, coaxially traversed by a tubular bearing housing 36 of the second fixed axis 30. Inside the blocking roller 28 is also a centrifugal coupling 38 formed by a pair of cylindrical weights 40 arranged between opposite ramps 42 of the drive member 33 and a circular rim 44 of the support arm 26.
  • A pair of compression springs 46 urges the centrifugal coupling 38 to the disengaged position so as to provide a radial clearance between the weights 40 and the cylindrical flange 44 of the drive member 33 of the arm 26 (FIG. 4). A connection interface 45 is engaged inside the rim 44, and transmits the relaxation forces of the springs 40 to the flyweights 40. The presence of the connection interface 45 and the compression springs 46 defines precisely the threshold of clutch of the centrifugal coupling 38 as a function of the speed or acceleration of the drive member 33 of the rotary roller 28.
  • In the event of a fall of the user, the sudden rotation in the direction of the arrow F1 of the drive member 33 of the blocking roller 28 around the second axis 30 causes the flyweights 40 to move by centrifugal effect towards the engaged position ( Figure 7). The weights 40 are subjected to a centrifugal force, which is greater and opposite to the restoring force of the springs 46. This displacement along the ramps 42 causes compression of the springs 46, and causes a jamming effect of the weights 40 against the rim 44. The roller 28 is thus secured to the support arm 26, so as to form a cleat that can pivot about the first axis 24, and block the fall by locking the rope 12.
  • The peripheral surface of the weights 40 and ramps 42 of the drive member 33 is advantageously ridged, so as to form a rack facilitating the clutch and disengagement of the centrifugal coupling 38. The compression springs 46 have stiffness uniforms to control the mating threshold.

Claims (4)

  1. Fall arrest device used with a fixed safety rope (12) and comprising a body (16) equipped with a securing system (18) arranged to occupy either an active locking position in case of a fall or an inactive unlocking position enabling the user to progress along the rope (12) in the ascending direction, or in the opposite direction when performing a controlled descent, said securing system (18) comprising:
    - a support arm (26) articulated on a first spindle (24) of the body (16),
    - a roller (28) in the form of a cylindrical wheel mounted rotating free on a second spindle (30) securedly attached to the support arm (26),
    - and a centrifugal coupling means (38) arranged between a drive member (33) of the roller (28) and the support arm (26) so as to occupy a disengaged position or an engaged position,
    characterized in that the centrifugal coupling means (38) comprise at least one flyweight (40) movable along a ramp (42) of the drive member (33) against a compression spring (46), and a connecting interface (45) engaged inside a cylindrical rim (44) of the support arm (26) to transmit the elastic force of the spring (46) to the flyweight (40).
  2. Fall arrest device according to claim 1, characterized in that the flyweight (40) is of cylindrical shape, and operates in the engaged position in conjunction with the cylindrical rim (44) of the support arm (26).
  3. Fall arrest device according to claim 2, characterized in that the peripheral surface of the flyweight (40) and of the ramp (42) of the drive member (33) is serrated so as to form a rack.
  4. Fall arrest device according to claims 1, characterized in that the centrifugal coupling means (38) comprise two flyweights (40) and two compression springs (46) arranged symmetrically with respect to the second spindle (30).
