Claims (4)

  1. Apparatus for applying labels to containers (10) which have a longitudinal axis and which have a closure (12) which has a surface with an inscription directed normally relative to the longitudinal axis, the apparatus having an electrooptical device (18) for recording the orientation of the containers, which device produces signals which reproduce the orientation of the containers (10), and a device (24, 32) for rotating the containers about their longitudinal axis into a target orientation in which the labels are applied to the containers (10) in a preset position, and a device (26) for applying the labels, the signals of the electrooptical device (18) being related by a control device (34) to the target orientation of the containers (10) and the device (24, 30) for rotating the containers (10) being controlled by the control device (34) such that the containers (10) are in the target orientation before the labels are applied, characterized in that the orientation of the containers (10) is recorded by means of the electrooptical device (18) using the inscription of the closures (12).
  2. Apparatus according to claim 1, characterized in that the device for rotating the containers (10) is integrated into an inlet star (20) which is arranged in front of the device (22, 26) for applying the labels.
  3. Apparatus according to claim 2, characterized in that the device (18) for recording the orientation of the containers (10) is arranged in front of the inlet star (20) or at the latest inside the inlet star (20).
  4. Apparatus according to one of claims 1 to 3, characterized in that the device for rotating the containers (10) is formed by a number of turntables (24) which are arranged on the periphery of a revolving platform (22) which moves the containers (10) past a labelling device (26), each turntable (24) being provided with a rotation-drive device (32) which is controlled by the control device (34).
