- the helmet generally comprises visors through which the wearer of the helmet can see his environment; these visors are most often retractable towards the top of the skull and provide protection of the face against various attacks (wind, dust, light or violent lighting, etc.).
- visors for this, it is generally provided on a standard helmet a dark visor arranged closest to the face and retractable inside the helmet, to protect against violent lighting in particular for day vision.
- night vision equipment must be placed before the wearer's eyes. However, the size of such equipment prohibits being able to lower the clear visor during the day.
- a very important problem which arises for all helmets is that of the weight carried when an ejection of the pilot is necessary or in the event of a violent impact (crash of the aircraft for example). Indeed, during an ejection it is absolutely essential that the pilot's face is protected by a folded visor. On the other hand, the weight of the functional elements added to the headset and positioning tend to impose dangerous efforts to the driver's neck in the event of hard acceleration, as during an ejection, and so avoid to add elements additional, especially placed away from the natural center of gravity of the bare head and the pilot's neck.
- pilot ejection One solution currently recommended in the event of pilot ejection is to eject the night vision equipment and then to lower the clear visor during the day before the pilot ejects. But an important drawback is that pilot ejection must be prepared. One could plan to keep the night vision equipment with a third clear visor placed in front to protect the pilot's face in the event of ejection. This would allow unprepared ejection. But the mass added to the helmet and the offset from the center of gravity would then become prohibitive (we add 5 to 10% to the weight of the helmet with a large lever arm relative to the pilot's neck).
- the solution envisaged is therefore to provide only two visors (one light, one dark) whatever the use day or night.
- the invention provides for adapting the standard helmet in order to allow rapid reconfiguration by replacing a day visor which does not degrade the ergonomics of the standard helmet with a night module incorporating night vision equipment and a clear visor. front of this equipment lockable in the down position. This is achieved according to the invention using articulations of the visor or the night module on the helmet, removable without tools.
- a helmet with retractable visors with rapid day / night reconfiguration comprising a shell including a sagittal guide rail with a central opening, characterized in that it comprises a retractable visor by day or a night module incorporating night vision equipment and a retractable visor at the front of this equipment, the day visor and the night module being interchangeable quickly and without tools and having an upper central part which cooperates with said guide rail and side arms each equipped symmetrically with an articulation on the shell of the helmet that can be dismantled without tools and in that each of said articulations about a common axis of rotation comprises a first part integral with the shell, comprising at least one guide boss in a predetermined direction perpendicular to said axis of rotation and a peripheral groove, and a second part integral with the arm, comprising at least one locking lever articulated in said second part to come and lock in said groove.

- the object of the invention is to be able to use a standard helmet with night vision equipment while allowing unprepared ejection and without any degradation of ergonomics in daytime configuration.
- a visor In a standard helmet, the clear day visor, placed in front of the helmet with respect to the tinted visor, is much too close to the pilot's face to allow the insertion of night vision equipment between the face and the day visor .
- the solutions used or possible can consist either of replacing the clear day visor with another visor much more distant from the face with the disadvantage of degrade the ergonomics of the helmet in daytime configuration, either to use a third clear visor compatible with the wearing of night vision equipment with the disadvantage of too high carried weight, or finally to provide an automatic ejection of part of head gear which is very difficult to develop.
- Figure 1 is a view of a helmet adapted to give it the ability to alternate quickly and without tools between day and night configuration. For this, we dismantle the exterior visor (clear) by day and the lateral mechanisms of this visor so as to leave on the shell 1 of the helmet only axes of rotation 4 and the control buttons 3 of the tinted interior visor, the mechanism of which order will not be described further because it is not modified.
- a first part of the dismountable joints arranged symmetrically on either side of the helmet comprises, in addition to the axis of rotation 4, a support and guide part 2 attached around the axis 4 and screwed onto the shell 1.
- this part 2 comprises a bearing face facing outwards and perpendicular to the axis of rotation and comprising a guide boss, as will be seen later.
- the helmet is also equipped with a sagittal guide rail 10 with a central opening 11 and notches 12 for locking the equipment in the low position.

- the part 2 carries on its support face 22 a boss 20 for guidance extending along a predetermined direction perpendicular to the axis of rotation 4 (FIG. 1) and included in a plane containing the axes of rotation and the center of the central opening 11 of the rail 10.
- the articulation comprises a second part secured to the arm 8 and comprising an intermediate piece 5, an intermediate piece 7 and a locking lever 6.
- the intermediate piece 5 in the form of a washer is provided with a peripheral groove 50 and a slot 51 extending from the center to the periphery of the intermediate piece.
- This slot has dimensions and a shape adapted to those of the boss 20 so that, when the part 5 comes to bear on the bearing surface 22, the boss 20 is engaged in the slot 51 and ensures the rotation of the part 5.
- the latter is provided with a lever 6 of generally semi-circular shape pivoting around a pivot 61 disposed in the groove 50 opposite the slot 51.
- the boss 20 comprises, as can be seen in the detail A of FIG. 2B, an outer peripheral groove 21 coming to align with the groove 50 of the part 5 when the latter is in abutment on the support part 2.
- the internal edge 60 of the lever 6 comes, in the locked position, insert into the part of the groove 50 opposite and into the groove 21 of the boss.
- the intermediate piece 7 comprises a slot 70 parallel to the direction of the slot 51 of the intermediate piece 5 and extending from the center of the piece 7 to its periphery with dimensions such that it allows the axis of rotation to pass 4 and centering on this axis in the articulation locking position.
- the intermediate piece 7 also comprises a centered pivot 71, engaging in a corresponding housing of the arm 8 to allow and guide a limited rotation of the arm 8 relative to the parts 5 and 7.
- the arm 8 has a slot 81 of the same dimensions as the slot 70 and aligned with it in the unlocked position. Fixing means secure the parts 5 and 7 with the arm 8 while allowing limited rotation of the arm 8 relative to the parts 5, 7.
- Figure 2B shows in section all these parts in the locked position. Having described these joints, Figure 3 shows the approach of a day visor 15 on the helmet.
- the movement of the visor 15 takes place in a direction F parallel to the predetermined direction of the boss 20.
- the upper mechanism 16 of the visor is passed through the central opening of the rail at the same time as the part 5 secured to the visor is guided on the boss of the piece 2 secured to the helmet.

- Figure 5 shows the adapted helmet with its clear day visor fitted.
- the visor 15 then occupies the same position as a standard day visor and can be manipulated in the central part and come to lock in the low position on the notches 12 ( Figure 1) of the rail. It can therefore be seen that the visor can be mounted or removed very easily without tools. Disassembly is carried out by raising the visor to the level of the central opening of the rail and by manually unlocking the two levers 6. When the visor moves upwards, the slot 81 of the arms 8 has come back into place. coincidence with the slots 51 and 70 to release the axes of rotation 4.
- the day visor is dismantled and a night module is used which is mounted on the helmet with identical articulations on the side arms.
- Figure 6 shows the night configuration architecture.
- the night module comprises a crest 30 with its lateral arms fixed to the helmet 1 by articulations 32 identical to those already described.
- the crest is equipped with the same upper locking mechanism as the visor, cooperating with the rail 10.
- the clear visor 31 supported by the crest is further from the face of the helmet wearer in order to be able to lock in front of the night vision equipment.
- the docking of the crest with the visor on the helmet is shown in Figure 7. It is done in much the same way as for the clear day visor.
- the reception of the night vision equipment is then done as shown in Figure 8.
- the visor 31 and the crest 30 are in the high position where they are held only by friction at the axes of rotation of the lateral joints.
- We then present the night vision equipment 40 which, by its piece 41 for example in a dovetail, comes to lock on the helmet 1. Once mounted, this equipment leaves the possibility of the visor 31 to fold in front of it and to lock in the low position in the notches of the rail, which is essential to guarantee the holding of the visor during an ejection which therefore does not require preparation.
- the embodiments described are not limitative of the invention.
- the invention makes it possible to preserve in daytime configuration a space and ergonomics identical to those of a standard helmet although the clear daytime visor has become modular.
