Description

The present invention relates to absorbent paper products and more particularly cellulose wadding for sanitary or domestic use and aims a sheet consisting of at least two plies, one of which is embossed for the realization of toilet paper.

In the sanitary and domestic paper industry, use is made, for the production of these products, of a generally creped absorbent paper of slight weight, designated: cellulose wadding or wadded fabric. It takes advantage of the capacity of elongation of the structure conferred for example by creping to emboss the sheet, that is to say permanently deform in places and obtain protrusions on a face corresponding to recessed areas on the other side.

Indeed, the trend in recent years, in terms of hygiene products has been to make them softer, softer by working their characteristics of thickness and strength, including embossing.
The latter also makes it possible to improve the visual appeal of the product. The present invention relates to paper converted into dry part.

The most widespread embossing patterns consist of a repetition on a geometric basis of elementary protuberances of small cross section and simple geometric shape. An example is described in the patent US-A-3,414,459 which relates to a sheet with two or three plies, ie consisting of a plurality of elementary sheets, called folds, bound or glued together. The plies are embossed with a frequency of distribution of the protuberances and a height of the protuberances adapted to the production of water-absorbing products such as essule-tout, the number of elements ranging from 5 to 30 cm 2 . Moreover, the Applicant has developed, for toilet paper in particular, patterns whose number of elements is greater, ranging from 30 to 80 cm 2 . In this case, because of their number, these elements form protuberances of lower height and necessarily have an elementary surface at the top also very low, less than 1 mm 2 . For these last embodiments, an aspect is obtained which mimics that of a woven product. An example has been described in the patent EP-A-26,548 . This type of embossing mainly affects the characteristics related to the thickness of the sheet, on the one hand, and its rigidity and strength, on the other hand. These patterns make it possible to achieve a good compromise between the desired improvements in the characteristics when converting the semi-finished product into a finished product, and the industrial operating conditions; they allow, in particular, the application of a sufficient embossing intensity. However, they have a limited visual appeal.

Other absorbent paper products consist of two plies but obtained according to a different association technique. On one hand, a fold or a set of two superposed folds is waffled and, on the other hand, a second fold by means of two distinct embossing devices. The first fold and the second fold are embossed in relief patterns consisting of protuberances. The density of patterns necessarily remains low: less than 20 protuberances / cm 2 for this type of product. Indeed the two plies are associated by means of a marrying cylinder so that the distal surfaces of the protuberances of the two superimposed folds are disposed opposite the surfaces between two protuberances in the plane of the second fold. This technique is still called "nested" process. With a structure of this type one seeks to obtain thick products having a good hand. However, especially for the application to toilet paper, the softness is not optimal because of the relatively coarse embossing. In addition, it is necessary to emboss strongly to obtain the desired large thickness.

In one and the other embodiment of a double sheet, the two plies are waffled. If the embossing brings thickness to each of the folds, however, it causes a significant reduction in its resistance to breakage. Indeed, the mechanical work on the sheet is accompanied by a loosening of interfiber bonds in the embossed areas.

The invention thus has for first objective the production of a double sheet whose breaking strength is improved compared to a double embossed sheet of the same thickness.

Conversely, increasing the embossing pressure increases the thickness of the sheet and / or the quality of the embossing pattern marking but is limited by the need not to induce excessive loss of resistance to breakage.

The second object of the invention is the production of a double sheet whose thickness and / or visibility of the embossing pattern is improved with respect to a double embossed sheet of the prior art while having a good breaking strength. .

According to the invention a toilet paper satisfying one or the other of the two objectives referred to above, consisting of two plies of cellulose wadding of weight 10 to 40 g / m 2 each one of which is embossed with relief patterns, consisting at least in part of discrete protuberances oriented towards the inside of the sheet, and the other being unembossed, is characterized in that the embossed ply has at least 30% of the total area at the minus 30 and less than 90 protuberances per cm 2 , the top surface of which is less than 1 mm 2 , preferably less than 0.7 mm 2 .

Indeed, the Applicant has found with surprise that a double sheet thus characterized has the same thickness as a double sheet made with two embossed folds in the same manner as the embossed ply of the invention and assembled in spikes point position.

This property has been observed only for densities of the motif at least equal to 30 pins per cm 2 on surface portions covering at least 30% of the total area.

The surface at the top of the protuberances is even weaker as the number of these latter is locally high. It is preferably less than 0.7 mm 2 for 30 protuberances per cm 2 and preferably less than or equal to 0.4 mm 2 for 50 protuberances per cm 2 .

By thickness, in the present technical field is meant the thickness measured on a stack of a certain number of sheets (12-ply for example) on which a slight pressure (2 kPa for example) is applied. It follows that the thickness takes into account a certain resistance to crushing of the structure. Thus without wishing to be bound by an explanation, the preservation of the thickness of the structure of the invention results from the better crush resistance of a ply which has been embossed with a high density pattern.

Conformément à une autre caractéristique le produit selon l'invention présente sur au moins 50% de la surface totale au moins 30 protubérances par cm2.According to another characteristic, the product according to the invention has at least 50% of the total surface area at least 30 protuberances per cm 2 .

Conformément à une autre caractéristique le nombre de protubérances est au moins de 50 par cm2.According to another characteristic, the number of protuberances is at least 50 per cm 2 .

According to another feature the product has a second embossing pattern between said surface portions. Advantageously, this pattern may be of linear type, ie consisting of protuberances whose surface at the apex is of linear shape.

  • the figure 1 schematically represents an enlarged section of the structure made according to the invention;
  • the figure 2 represents an installation for carrying out the invention.

Avantageusement les deux plis sont liés par collageWith reference to the figure 1 , the product 1 according to the invention comprises two plies, an embossed ply 2, and a non-embossed or smooth ply 4. The embossed ply comprises protuberances 11 distributed at a fixed constant pitch over a surface portion. In the structure of the product according to the invention, the protuberances of the embossed ply are oriented towards the inside. The two plies are preferably linked together. In particular, they can be linked together at the distal surfaces of the protuberances of the embossed fold. Advantageously, the two plies are linked by gluing

The product according to the invention has a basis weight of about 20 to 80 g / m 2 . Each of the plies is made of cellulose wadding. Cellulose wadding is a creped paper of low basis weight between 10 and 40 g / cm 2 which has been dried on a heated cylinder and from which it has been detached by means of a metal blade, called a creping blade.

On surface portions together representing at least 30% of the total area, the embossed ply has a pattern density greater than 30 protuberances / cm 2 and a density less than 90 protuberances / cm 2 . It can also present in addition one or more types of different patterns and whose pattern densities are different. The protuberances can then be of different height, and the fold has patterns of different levels. European patent applications EP-A-0 426 548 and EP-A-0 797 705 illustrate embossed products according to these principles but having two embossed folds.

In the product according to the invention, the second ply is not embossed.

The fibrous and / or chemical composition of the plies may be the same or different. For example, the unembossed ply may have a fibrous composition essentially based on long fibers such as resin fibers, and the embossed ply, a fibrous composition essentially based on short fibers. This combination makes it possible to obtain a more resistant product without sacrificing the softness provided by the short fibers. The non-embossed ply may comprise a temporary or possibly permanent wet resistant additive. If this additive is already present in a certain amount in the embossed fold, the non-embossed fold may contain a larger amount. An example of a wet-resistant additive is a compound of the polyamine epichlorohydrin type, marketed under the name KYMENE SLX by the company HERCULES. The embossed fold can mean a softener or debinding. The sheet thus formed has a very good wet strength and therefore good strength, in particular because of the composition of the non-embossed ply. It also offers a softness of surface by the choice of the fibrous and chemical composition of the embossed fold.

Each fold may further consist of one or more layers forming a laminate. The layers in this case may also have a different fibrous and / or chemical composition.

The sheet is represented with the two folds 2 and 4 superimposed. They are arranged so that the protuberances are inside the sheet. The two plies can be bonded to each other in any manner known to those skilled in the art, such as, for example, mechanically by knurling, that is to say by passing the sheet between a wheel and a smooth counter cylinder.

On obtient un produit particulièrement souple lorsque la surface est inférieure à 5 %.Preferably, however, the two plies are bonded to one another by means of an adhesive substance interposed between the vertices of the protuberances of the folds represented which come into contact. The adhesive substance is then preferably deposited on the highest vertices of the elements of the pattern, and is advantageously colored in order to bring out the details. Thus, when the embossed ply has protuberances whose vertices are at different levels, a partially associated product is produced on a small surface. We obtain a product particularly soft when the surface is less than 5%.

It consists essentially of elements forming part of the state of the art. A first embossing cylinder 10 has been etched in a pattern with spikes of a shape adapted to the desired protuberances. The method consists of embossing a fold of cellulose wadding 20 unwound from a not shown reel, between the embossing roll 10 and a rubber roll 12 and then coming together by means of a marrying roll 14 a fold non-embossed cellulose wadding 40, also unwound from a not shown spool, on the first 20 while it is still in contact with the embossing roll. Previously, the adhesive substance, preferably water-based, has been applied to the tops of the embossed fold by means of a sizing roll 16.

The products according to the invention have very advantageous characteristics compared to products consisting of two plies existing on the market.

This is illustrated by the following example, which was made from sheets of tissue wadding of hygienic quality and different weights, products according to a standard technique (referenced 1 and 3) such as those sold under the mark LOTUS, and products (referenced 2 and 4) according to the invention, that is to say with a single embossed fold.

In Example A, the pattern is one currently sold under the trademark LOTUS and comprises 80 protuberances per cm 2. The surface at the top of these is less than 0.4 mm 2 . The standard product is then associated in point / tip mode.

In Example B, the pattern is composed of surface protuberances at the apex also less than 1 mm 2 . They are distributed in alignments along which the pattern density is greater than 30 protuberances per cm 2 , the alignments being separated from each other with sufficient spacing to allow assembly in the nested position. The average density is 15 p / cm 2 . Such a pattern is described in the patent application filed by the Applicant under the number FR-A-98 05147 April 24, 1998 .

Avec une association de pli conforme à l'invention, la transformation entraîne une perte de seulement 5 et 7 % contre 12 et 11% pour obtenir la même épaisseur de produit, 0.32 mm.Comparing columns 1 and 2, it is surprisingly found that if the standard product and the product of the invention are subjected to respective embossing pressures in order to obtain the same thickness (0.27 mm) in In both cases, much less resistance is lost with the product of the invention. In fact, in the example, there was the same embossing pressure for the standard product and for the product of the invention. Thus, for the product of the invention, only 1% resistance in the running direction and 11% resistance in the transverse direction have been lost by the embossing and the transformation operation, whereas in the standard product of the prior art, lost respectively 15% and 18%. The same observation is made when considering columns 3 and 4. With a fold association according to the invention, the transformation causes a loss of only 5 and 7% against 12 and 11% to obtain the same thickness of product, 0.32 mm.

  • Produit standard (1) : 1,6 +/- 0,2
  • Produit de l'invention (2) : 1,7 +/- 0,2
  • Produit standard (3) : 2 +/- 0,2
  • Produit de l'invention (4) : 2 +/- 0,2
In addition the softness of the product of the invention is surprisingly not impaired compared to the standard product. A consumer test conducted on a panel of 20 people in which they were asked to give their opinion on the softness of the products in this case, gave the following results (on a scale from -3 to +3):
  • Standard product (1): 1,6 +/- 0,2
  • Product of the invention (2): 1.7 +/- 0.2
  • Standard product (3): 2 +/- 0,2
  • Product of the invention (4): 2 +/- 0.2

By comparing the results of columns 1 and 2 between them or 3 and 4, it is found that by transforming the sheets so as to obtain products having substantially the same thickness, significantly improves the strength of the product of the invention.

Comparing the results of columns 1 and 2, it is found that by aiming at the production of products having the same cross-directional resistance, it is possible to emboss the fold more intensively in the case of the invention. A thickness of 0.36 mm is obtained for the sheet of the invention against only 0.30 mm by the standard product. From the point of view of the consumer, therefore, a thicker and improved-looking sheet is produced by a clearer marking without sacrificing its mechanical strength.

By way of example, an embossed product was produced with a pattern consisting of protuberances on the engraved cylinder 1.3 mm high, at a rate of 7 per cm 2 . The standard method with "nested" assembly of the two embossed folds gives a sheet thickness of 0.28 mm for a cross-directional strength of 80 N / m. Under the same conditions a product with a single embossed fold has a thickness loss of nearly 20% even if there is a slight increase in resistance, less than 9%. By increasing the pressure, a similar thickness will only be obtained at the cost of a strongly degraded resistance.

According to another embodiment of the invention, an engraved cylinder 10 having first pins and second pins is used. The first pins are distributed in a first pattern having on at least one surface portion at least 30 pins per cm 2 , and preferably 50 pins per cm 2 . The second pins are distributed in a second pattern, the number of second pins is lower. The vertices of the second spikes are at a higher level than those of the first spikes. Thus, this cylinder makes it possible to emboss a fold 20 according to first protuberances corresponding to the first pins and second protuberances corresponding to the second pins. The embossing is on two levels. Because of their prominence, the second protuberances of the fold 20 formed on the cylinder 10 receive the glue of the gluing cylinder 16. The connection with the non-embossed fold 40 is thus provided by the second protuberances. According to this other embodiment, a second non-embossed ply 40 ', represented by an arrow on the spindle, is introduced between the cylinder 10 thus etched and the marrying roll 14. figure 2 . By choosing in particular correctly the amount of adhesive applied to the second protuberances of the fold 20 and the pressure of the marrying cylinder, it ensures a distribution of the adhesive on both sides of the fold 40 and the formation of a connection between the fold 40 ' and the fold 40 at the top of the second protuberances. This produces a product with three plies both thick and flexible. Instead of applying the adhesive to the tops of the protuberances it can be sprayed on both sides of the first non-embossed ply.
