  1.   7. Apparatus according to one of the preceding claims wherein the turning portion (4a, 4b) rotates through 180° about its axis of rotation (6a, 6b) upon a full rotary movement of the turning drum (2).

Apparatus according to claim 11 wherein the feed means (62) is a feed drum having the receiving means (64) on its outside periphery, wherein in the direction of conveying movement of the feed drum only each second receiving means is occupied by rod-shaped objects (11) so that, after being turned by the turning drum (2), the rod-shaped objects (11) which are arranged in one of the rows can be deposited by the turning drum (2) in the same row in which the rod-shaped objects (11) which were not taken over by the turning drum (2), in the receiving means (64) which are unoccupied in said row.

  16. Apparatus according to claim 15 wherein the push rod (16a, 16b, 18a, 18b) is connected by way of at least one link (34a) to a crankshaft (22a) which in turn is operatively connected to the shaft (12a, 12b).
  17. Apparatus according to claim 16 wherein the rotary movement of the crankshaft (22a) is converted into the rotary movement of the shaft (12a, 12b) by way of gears in a ratio of 2:1 so that the shaft (12a, 12b) rotates through 180° in a full revolution of the turning drum (2).
  18. Apparatus according to one of claims 16 and 17 having at least two push rods (16a, 16b, 18a, 18b) which are arranged parallel, wherein the respective links (34a) are arranged on the crankshaft (22a) eccentrically and in mutually displaced relationship through about 120°.
  19. Apparatus according to one of claims 15 to 18 wherein the push rods (16a, 16b, 18a, 18b) are biased towards the cams (40a, 40b) by means of compression springs (42a) which are associated with the push rods.
  20. A cigarette manufacturing machine comprising an apparatus according to one of the preceding claims.
  21. A method of turning and transferring filter cigarettes (11) of a first row into the gaps in an adjacent second row of filter cigarettes (11) whose filter cigarettes (11) are fed in axially aligned relationship in mirror-image arrangement with respect to the filter cigarettes (11) of the first row along a first conveyor belt, comprising the following steps:
    a) the filter cigarettes (11) of the first row are transferred onto a closed second conveyor path;
    b) groups comprising at least two adjacent filter cigarettes (11) are simultaneously turned through 180° perpendicularly to their longitudinal axis;
    c) the filter cigarettes (11) are displaced by their length in their axial direction;
    d) the filter cigarettes (11) are displaced in. the direction of conveying movement corresponding to half a pitch (T/2); and
    e) the re-oriented filter cigarettes (11), in the region of the transfer onto the closed conveyor path, are discharged therefrom into the gaps in the second row of filter cigarettes (11).
  22. A method according to claim 21 wherein steps b) and c) are effected simultaneously.
  23. A method according to claim 21 wherein steps c) and d) are effected simultaneously.
  24. A method according to claim 21 wherein steps b) and d) are effected simultaneously.
  25. A method according to claim 21 wherein steps b), c) and d) are effected simultaneously.
  26. A method according to one of claims 21 to 25 wherein the groups comprising at least two adjacent filter cigarettes are turned in the opposite direction to a further group disposed in the direction of conveying movement beside such a group.
  27. A method according to one of claims 21 to 26 wherein the operation of turning a group begins immediately after transfer onto the closed conveyor path, and wherein the operation of turning a group following said group on the conveyor path begins only after the group has passed through a rotary angle of about 135°.
  28. A method according to one of claims 21 to 27 wherein the operation of turning each group is effected while passing through a rotary angle of about 180° on the closed conveyor path.
