Definitions
- the invention relates to an internal combustion engine according to the preamble of claim 1.
- An internal combustion engine is already known (magazine: Autos Testtechnik, ot, No. 11 of May 16, 1998, ISSN 0027-1462, article: "18-cylinder from Volkswagen", Pages 16 to 23), which has eighteen cylinders, which are housed in three rows of cylinders. Each row of cylinders holds six pistons.
- the six overhead camshafts control the four gas exchange valves per cylinder.
- a crankshaft is used to accommodate eighteen connecting rods, each Grip three connecting rods on a crank of the crankshaft.
- the three rows of cylinders are made as a single part from cast aluminum. Due to the complex geometry of this part, casting is very complex.
- the three rows of cylinders are arranged in a star shape, with a vertical row of cylinders one from a vertical axis and one Longitudinal axis of the engine spanned engine level of the internal combustion engine is divided in half.
- the other two rows of cylinders are arranged symmetrically to the engine level. Since there are only three rows of cylinders, a relatively large number of pistons must be accommodated in one row of cylinders. This results in large dimensions in the longitudinal direction, which on the one hand result in a relatively high weight of the internal combustion engine and, on the other hand, cause unfavorable crash behavior due to long stems of the body.
- the internal combustion engine according to the invention with the characterizing features of claim 1 has the advantage of a more compact structure with a relatively low weight in relation to the size and number of cylinders of the internal combustion engine. Another advantage is that only a short stem of the body is required for the internal combustion engine, which results in a favorable crash behavior. The smoothness of the internal combustion engine that can be achieved, particularly when the number of cylinders is twenty or more, is particularly advantageous. Another advantage is that the formation of four individual rows of cylinders results in a simplified manufacture of the cylinder heads.
- an internal combustion engine is partially shown in section, which has four rows of cylinders 1, 2, 3, 4.
- the internal combustion engine can be a mixture-compressing, spark-ignited but also an air-compressing, self-igniting internal combustion engine.
- At least one piston 5 is accommodated in each row of cylinders 1, 2, 3, 4. So there are versions with four, eight, twelve, sixteen, twenty, twenty-four or more pistons 5 or cylinders possible. In the exemplary embodiment, twenty cylinders are provided, so that one row of cylinders 1, 2, 3, 4 contains five pistons 5, respectively.
- the rows of cylinders 1, 2, 3, 4 are arranged such that one row of cylinders 2 or 3 of an associated V-arrangement 1, 2 or
- crankshafts 17 of crankshaft 17 which are not shown in detail, with at least two connecting rods 10, 12 and 11, 13 of a V-arrangement of cylinder rows 1, 2 and 3, 4 are attached to a common offset.
- Another possibility is to provide offset crank pins on the crankshaft, so-called split pins, which are required to compensate for an ignition offset in the V arrangement of two pistons on a common crank pin of the crankshaft 17.
- the internal combustion engine has at least two gas exchange valves 20, 21 per cylinder, preferably four gas exchange valves are provided.
- the gas exchange valves 20, 21 are controlled via bumpers 22, 23, which each lead to a camshaft 25.
- two camshafts 25 are provided, which are accommodated in the free space between the inner rows of cylinders 2, 3 and the outer rows of cylinders 1, 4 and, viewed in the radial direction from the crankshaft 17, somewhat below the gas exchange valves 20, 21, ie closer to the crankshaft 17 , lie.
- the hot exhaust gases are removed from the gas exchange valves 21 via exhaust gas lines 30 which, as shown in the drawing, run above the cylinders or the cylinder rows 1, 2, 3, 4.
- the arrangement of the inlet valves 20 and the outlet valves 21 takes place in the clockwise direction of rotation as follows:
- the inlet valve 20 for the cylinder 2 or the cylinder bank 2, which continues to connect in the direction of rotation, the inlet valve 20, then the exhaust valve 21, -
- the exhaust valve 21 For the cylinder 4 or the cylinder bank 4 which continues to connect in the direction of rotation, first the exhaust valve 21, then the intake valve 20.
- inlet valves 20 and outlet valves 21 in the clockwise direction of rotation is also possible:
- an internal combustion engine which, as stated in the exemplary embodiment, has twenty cylinders, for example eleven main bearings are to be provided for mounting the crankshaft.
- the overall length of the internal combustion engine is approximately 800 mm.
- the distance between the cylinders is approx. 136 mm for a connecting rod with a width of 12 mm, the cylinder row offset is 12 to 56 mm.
- the ignition intervals are to be provided at 36-36-36-36 degrees.
- crankpin of the crankshaft with a six degree offset (a so-called split pin)
- six main bearings are required to support the crankshaft. This results in an overall length of the internal combustion engine of approximately 690 mm.
- the cylinder spacing for a connecting rod with a width of 12 mm is approx. 108 mm, the cylinder row offset is 12 to 13.5 mm.
- the ignition intervals are to be provided at 36-36-36-36 degrees.
- crank pin In a version with twenty-four cylinders and 4x12 mm connecting rods per crank pin, a triple-offset crank pin with an offset of 12, -24 and 12 degrees is required (a so-called three split-pin pitch of the crank pin). Seven main bearings are required for the crankshaft. This results in an overall length of the internal combustion engine of approximately 760 mm.
- the cylinder spacing for a connecting rod of 12 mm is approx. 108 mm, the cylinder row offset is 13.5 mm.
- the ignition intervals are to be provided at 30-30-30-30 degrees.
