Abstract

An extension unit (50, 60 or 70) is connected to the main body (10) of a controller provided with an analogue direction key (12), a digital direction key (14), indicating buttons (20a-20z), indicating levers (22l and 22r), etc. When the unit (50) having a light emitting section (52) is connected to the controller, a cordless controller becomes available.     The present invention relates to a controller which outputs various instructions to an electronic device, such as a game device, by operation of an operator.

    More than several years have passed since video game devices for domestic use first appeared, and recently a large variety of entertaining games have been developed. Video games for the domestic use are very popular as an entertainment. Domestic game devices are connected to input means called controllers. Players operate the controllers to output various instructions to the game devices.

    Thus the controllers intervene between the players and the game devices, and act as a man-machine interface, and thus are very important to the game devices. The ease of operation as well as the functional ability of the controllers are closely related to the feasibility and entertainment value of games.

    Various types of controllers for the domestic game devices have been proposed, but in general most controllers for the domestic video game devices include direction keys which command directions as well as a plurality of command buttons.

    However, the command buttons of the conventional controller can make only one command by one operation thereof, and are unsuitable to continuously make commands. It is very difficult especially to make commands which are continuously changed. When continuously changed commands must be made, nothing suffices other than unnatural operations of pushing the command buttons for various periods of time or pushing the command buttons repeatedly a number of times.     The above-described objects are achieved by a controller connectable to an electronic device for a game comprising:
    • direction key means disposed on an upper operational surface of the controller and providing signals indicative of directions;
    • a plurality of command buttons disposed on said upper operational surface and providing a signal indicative of one command by one operation; and
    • a pair of command means each disposed at a lower operational surface of the controller;
       wherein said direction key means and said command buttons are disposed so as to be manipulated by the thumbs of an operator and said command means are disposed so as to be manipulated by fingers other than the thumbs of the operator when said controller is held by an operator with both hands;
       CHARACTERISED IN THAT said pair of command means includes a pair of levers disposed rotatably moveable in response to operation by an operator and the controller outputs continuously variable command amounts by one operation in correspondence to the operational angles of the manipulated lever.

    In the above-described controller it is preferable that change-over means are provided for interchanging signals transmitted to the electronic device from a first mode of data provided by a first direction key and a second mode of data provided by a second direction key.

    direction key means (12, 14, 518) disposed on an upper operational surface (10a, 510a) of the controller and providing signals indicative of directions;
    a plurality of command buttons (20, 520) disposed on said upper operational surface (10a, 510a) and providing a signal indicative of one command by one operation; and
    a pair of command means each disposed at a lower operational surface (10c, 10d, 510c, 510d) of the controller;
       wherein said direction key means (12, 14, 518) and said command buttons (20, 520) are disposed so as to be manipulated by the thumbs of an operator and said command means are disposed so as to be manipulated by fingers other than the thumbs of the operator when said controller is held by an operator with both hands;
       CHARACTERISED IN THAT said pair of command means includes a pair of levers (22l, 22r, 522l, 522r) disposed rotatably moveable in response to operation by an operator and the controller outputs continuously variable command amounts by one operation in correspondence to the operational angles of the manipulated lever (22l, 22r, 522l, 522r).
  2. A controller according to claim 1 wherein said direction key means disposed on said upper operational surface (10a) comprises a first direction key (14) arranged so as to provide signals indicative of a plurality of prescribed discrete directions, and a second direction key (12) arranged so as to provide signals indicative of arbitrary directions over 360 degrees;
       and said first and second direction keys (12, 14) are disposed at the left part of the upper operational surface (10a) so that, when the controller is held by an operator with both hands, both of said first and second direction keys (12, 14) are manipulated by the thumb of the operator's left hand.
  3. A controller according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein said command buttons (20, 520) are disposed so as to be manipulated by the thumb of the operator's right hand.
  4. A controller according to any preceding claim, wherein said pair of levers (22l, 22r, 522l, 522r) are disposed so as to protrude downwardly from the lower operational surface (10c, 10d, 510c, 510d) of the controller so as to be manipulated by fingers other than the thumbs of an operator when said controller is held by an operator with both hands.
  5. A controller according to claim 2 or claim 3, and claim 4 when dependent to claim 2 or claim 3, further comprising:
    signal generating means (560, 564) which transmits to the electronic device a first mode of data based on the signals provided by the first direction key (14) and the plurality of command buttons (20, 520), and a second mode of data based on the signals provided by the second direction key (12); and
    change-over means (18, 524) for changing between the transmission of the first mode of data and the second mode of data to the electronic device.
  6. A controller according to any preceding claim, further comprising a pair of grips (512l, 512r) to be held by an operator.
  7. A controller according to any preceding claim, further comprising a projection (30, 80, 510b) disposed so as to protrude downwardly from the lower operational surface between said pair of levers (22l, 22r, 522l, 522r).
  8. A controller according to claim 6, further comprising a projection (30, 80, 510b) disposed so as to protrude downwardly from the lower operational surface between said pair of levers (22l, 22r, 522l, 522r) so that the controller can be supported by the projection (30, 80, 510b) and the pair of grips (512l, 512r) when placed on a flat surface.
  9. A game apparatus (200) connected to the controller according to any preceding claim and adapted to execute a game to be controlled by a command from the controller.
