- the object of the present invention is to provide improved installations or apparatus for filling gas cylinders.
- the objective of the invention consists more particularly in making it possible to fill gas cylinders with improved precision and at a high rate.
- the scales fitted to the filling carousel have a relatively poor precision which, taking into account in addition the time constant (or dead time or reaction time) of the electromechanical or electropneumatic systems for closing the filling conduits, results in disparities in the filling of bottles, of the order of a hundred grams or more.
- the bottles are actually filled with at least a hundred grams above or below the filling reference value; in order to guarantee a minimum filling of a gas cylinder to a determined value, the reference value must therefore be approximately one hundred grams greater than this determined value; as a result, therefore, a significant loss of product unnecessarily introduced into the bottle.

- the regulator 42 for maintaining the pressure is generally located on this said return pipe which is connected to the carousel 9 by a second rotary connector 41 ; this regulator 42 for maintaining a pressure within a determined range can be eliminated by using a mass flow meter according to the invention.
- the abscissa axis represents time and the ordinate axis represents the mass flow rate of liquefied gas passing through the flow meter and actually introduced into the bottle.
- the curve of variation of the flow during a filling operation which is illustrated in this figure shows that the transient flow 57 of start of filling varies from a zero value at the time 50 when a signal corresponding to the opening order arrives at the filling valve, up to a value 54 corresponding to the normal filling flow rate, which is reached at time 51; the time interval separating instants 50 and 51 can be of the order of 0.5 seconds.
- the flow 58 retains a value 54 which is substantially constant until the arrival at time 52 of the order to close the filling valve; the flow 59 then decreases to a zero value which it reaches at the time 53; taking into account the flow rate values usually used, the quantities of identified gases 55 and 56 flowing during the transient periods of opening and closing of the valve (s), can each be of the order of approximately 50 grams; these quantities can be very variable depending on the environmental conditions of the installation, can also vary from one valve to another, and also vary depending on the evolution over time of the behavior of the valve and its control mechanism; due to the very high sensitivity, linearity and precision of the mass flow meter, these changes can be measured and taken into account by the electronic control unit to constantly modify and for each filling station, the set values to be observed.

Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to an automatic filling device for a generally metallic bottle or reservoir with liquefied gas, particularly liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) such as butane or propane.
The technical field of the invention is that of the manufacture of an automatic gas cylinder filling installation.
It is known from patent FR2681 934 (Provençale d'Automation et de Mécanique) a liquefied gas bottle filling installation which includes a bottle weighing unit upstream of a carousel, a programmable controller connected to the weighing to determine the weight of gas to be introduced into each bottle for filling and controlling the filling valve fitted to a filling station; the installation also includes a weighing unit located downstream of the carousel to control after filling the quantity of gas actually introduced into the bottles; the carousel is equipped with a plurality of scales for controlling the weight of the bottle as it is filled.
The object of the present invention is to provide improved installations or apparatus for filling gas cylinders.
The objective of the invention consists more particularly in making it possible to fill gas cylinders with improved precision and at a high rate. Indeed, the scales fitted to the filling carousel have a relatively poor precision which, taking into account in addition the time constant (or dead time or reaction time) of the electromechanical or electropneumatic systems for closing the filling conduits, results in disparities in the filling of bottles, of the order of a hundred grams or more.
As a result, the bottles are actually filled with at least a hundred grams above or below the filling reference value; in order to guarantee a minimum filling of a gas cylinder to a determined value, the reference value must therefore be approximately one hundred grams greater than this determined value; as a result, therefore, a significant loss of product unnecessarily introduced into the bottle.
Patent application EP 653 585 describes an installation for filling motor vehicle tanks with gas, which comprises a mass flow meter, for example of the type using those of the Coriolis effect, and a control valve disposed upstream of the flow meter ; a non-return valve fitted to the tank to be filled, the volume of which is unknown; filling is carried out by a succession of steps making it possible to obtain complete filling corresponding to the desired pressure (approximately 200 bars); the device comprises a sensor for measuring the pressure prevailing in the tank to be filled and a temperature sensor; filling is carried out by several successive filling steps, each followed by a pressure control step and calculation of a corrected maximum pressure.
This slow process and device cannot be used to automatically fill gas cylinders in less than three seconds.
The solution to the problem posed consists in using, instead of the scales normally used to control or dose the quantity of LPG introduced into the bottle during its filling, a mass flow meter.
It has indeed been found that, surprisingly, such flowmeters can be used in this particular application while numerous tests of various flowmeters such as in particular rotary vane flowmeters, valve flowmeters, vortex flowmeters, flowmeters with Pitot or Venturi tubes, electromagnetic flowmeters, with ultrasound have proved unsuccessful.
This probably results from the fact that industrial installations for automatic filling of gas cylinders have to process and fill cylinders at very high rates, for example of the order of 1200 bottles per hour and sometimes more, and are subject to constraints d harsh environment, particularly in terms of vibrations; furthermore, the ambient temperature at which such installations must operate can be very variable in a range which may for example range from 0 ° C to 40 ° C; on the other hand, the pressure prevailing in the bottle during its filling can be different depending in particular on the nature of the liquefied gas which is introduced therein, the LPG supply pressure at which the gas is delivered to the filling installation can vary in significant proportions (for example from 7 bars to 20 Bars, while the pressure in the bottle is of the order of 5 bars) depending on the design and sizing of the various organs located upstream, from a large capacity main tank from which the LPG is delivered and conveyed, to the filling apparatus, including various apparatus situated on the LPG supply conduits from this supply reservoir to the bottles to be filled; such pressure and temperature variations in particular make it difficult and hardly conceivable industrially the use of a flow meter to precisely control the filling of the LPG bottle.
It was therefore found that the use of a direct mass flow meter, preferably using the Coriolis effect, could be used in these LPG bottle filling installations, despite the unfavorable and highly variable environmental constraints and makes it possible to obtain a very significantly improved filling accuracy for gas cylinders, which is of the order of about ten grams.
The invention is particularly applicable to the filling of substantially identical gas cylinders containing a mass of LPG ranging from approximately 3 to 30 kg, under a pressure of the order of 5 to 15 bars.

The invention makes it possible to propose automatic filling installations which are less costly and whose maintenance is very much easier compared to the scales comprising complex and bulky electro-mechanical assemblies; in addition, such filling installations using mass flowmeters do not require a control of adjustment of the flowmeters (dosing control) after commissioning, and make it possible to ensure very high repeatability or fidelity of filling. In addition, thanks to a very high sensitivity and a very high dynamic range of this type of sensor, it is possible to take into account for the control of filling of a bottle, the quantity of gas introduced into it after that a valve for closing the supply line of the latter has been ordered, that is to say to continue measuring the quantity of gas introduced into the bottle during (and if necessary after) the closure of this valve.

With reference to FIG. 2, the preferred

The LPG circulating in the
With reference to FIG. 3, a circuit generally used for supplying a

The curve of variation of the flow during a filling operation which is illustrated in this figure shows that the
The flow 58 retains a
