Abstract

To register the entry of water into a program controlled clothes or dishes washing machine, a thermal sensor registers water flow with an attachment to determine temp. change through flowing water in a fixed time span.

Description

The invention relates to a method for determining whether water flows into a program-controlled washing machine or dishwasher, which has a hot water connection and a cold water connection, each having a solenoid valve, and in which an additional device which does not intervene in the control of the washing machine or dishwasher is used, which has a has arranged in the water inlet of the washing machine or dishwasher and is connected to the solenoid valves of the hot water connection and cold water connection.

A method of the above type is described in DE-U-88 09 548.7. This utility model has the subject of an additional device, which makes it possible to optimize the work of a program-controlled washing machine with regard to its consumption of electrical energy, water and detergent, without having to intervene in the existing control of the washing machine.

A flow sensor could be installed in the water inlet to determine whether water is entering the washing machine. However, such a sensor is too expensive in practice. In order to reduce this effort, the known additional device has a pressure sensor in the water inlet. This registers the pressure changes in the water inlet that occur when opening and closing a solenoid valve that controls the water inlet into the washing machine.

However, it has been shown in the known additional device that a pressure sensor for detecting the Flowing or not flowing water is undesirably expensive and moreover prone to failure. The service life of a pressure sensor is also relatively limited in this application. The reason for the short life of the pressure sensor is, in particular, pressure surges in the water pipe system, which are caused by the rapid closing of water outlets, for example the one-hand mixer for the water inlet into a bathtub. There, the water flow is relatively high, so that when the actuating lever is suddenly pressed down, a large amount of flow is suddenly stopped, as a result of which a strong pressure surge forms in the entire line system, which also loads the pressure sensor.

The invention is based on the problem of developing a method of the type mentioned at the outset by which the flow of water in the water inlet of a washing machine or dishwasher can be determined with as little effort as possible.

This problem is solved in accordance with the invention in that a temperature sensor is used as the sensor and the temperature change resulting from the inflow of water is determined in a fixed time unit to determine the flow of water with the additional device.

Such a temperature sensor can be obtained far more cost-effectively than a pressure sensor and also works trouble-free in continuous use, since it is not negatively influenced by pressure surges in the water inlet. Since there is often a temperature sensor in the water inlet of washing machines or dishwashers in order to be able to determine the temperature of the water flowing in from the hot water connection, this temperature sensor can be used to carry out the method according to the invention, so that then no changes to the hardware are required to carry out the method according to the invention. All that is required is to program a computer accordingly in the additional device. According to the invention, in the additional device according to DE-U-88 09 548.7, a component, namely the pressure sensor, is omitted and the result is that this does not result in a minor function, but surprisingly results in a lower susceptibility to failure, in addition to cost savings.

The method according to the invention could even be used if a washing machine or dishwasher has only one cold water connection. Even then, there would be a drop in temperature in the water inlet when the water flowed because the newly flowing water is usually colder than water that had been in the water inlet for some time and could therefore absorb heat from the environment.

If the incoming cold water has exactly the temperature that prevails in the room, then the temperature at the water inlet does not change when cold water begins to flow to the washing machine or dishwasher. In such a case, the supply of cold water would therefore not be detectable with the temperature sensor. However, if, according to a particularly advantageous development of the method according to the invention, the additional device by means of the solenoid valves is used to switch over to the other water inflow state when the temperature changes over time, then the flow of cold water can also be determined under these conditions, because in the case of water flowing into the washing machine or dishwasher Water a short-term opening of the solenoid valve for the hot water would result in a temperature rise at the temperature sensor. If the water inlet were closed on the washing machine or dishwasher side, there would be no water in the water inlet flow, then even when the solenoid valve of the hot water connection was opened, no warm water would reach the temperature sensor and thus no temporal temperature difference would occur.

If there is cold water in the water inlet, then opening the cold water connection and the solenoid valve controlling the inflow into the washing machine would initially not be noticeable, since there would be no temperature change. For the same reason, the inflow of water would go unnoticed if there was initially hot water in the water inlet and the solenoid valve of the hot water connection and the solenoid valve controlling the inflow into the washing machine would open. These malfunctions can be easily ruled out if the temperature change and the temperature falls below a short time, repeatedly and repeatedly to the solenoid valve of the hot water connection and if the temperature threshold is exceeded, the solenoid valve of the cold water connection is repeatedly and repeatedly switched over.

In practice, it has proven to be advantageous if the brief switchover to the other water inflow state takes place when the temperature changes are below 2 ° K / sec.

To further clarify the method according to the invention, a washing machine with water and power supply is shown schematically in the drawing and is described below.

The drawing shows the outline of a washing machine 1, which has a conventional water inlet 2 and a power cord 3 with a power plug 4. At the water inlet 2, a mixer 5 is connected, which has a hot water connection 6 and a cold water connection 7 is connected. Solenoid valves 8, 9 can control the amount of hot and cold water flowing in. However, water only gets into the washing machine 1 if, in addition to at least one of the solenoid valves 8, 9, a solenoid valve 10 in the water inlet 2 is also open. This solenoid valve 10 is actuated by a control, not shown, of the washing machine 1.

A temperature sensor 11, which is arranged in the water inlet 2, is important for the invention. This temperature sensor 11 is connected to a control unit 12, which has a mains plug 13 and a plug contact 14. The mains plug 4 of the washing machine 1 can be plugged into this plug contact 14 so that it can be supplied with electrical energy via the control device 12. Not shown is a computer in the control unit 12, which controls the power supply to the washing machine 1 on the basis of the temperature signals of the temperature sensor 11 and the information about the power consumption of the washing machine 1, which is supplied by a current sensor installed in the control unit 12.

On the front of the control device 12 there is a selector switch 15, with which one can set the washing process with which the program is to start, in accordance with the setting made on the washing machine 1. Furthermore, the control device 12 has a timer 16 with which the total duration of the interruption of the main washing process can be set. In addition, a temperature switch 17 is provided, which allows the temperature of the water supplied to the washing machine 1 to be adjusted.

If no water flows in water inlet 2, then the temperature in water inlet 2 remains constant or changes only slightly due to the heat given off or absorption of the water inlet to or from the ambient air. If cold water or hot water flows into the water inlet 2 by opening the solenoid valve 10 and one of the solenoid valves 8, 9, then the temperature at the temperature sensor 11 changes very quickly, which serves as an indication of the flow of water in the control unit.

In unfavorable cases it can happen that the cold water coming from the cold water connection 7 has exactly the same temperature as the water previously standing in the water inlet 2. Nothing would then change at the temperature sensor 11, so that the flow of water would not be detectable. To prevent this, it is provided in the control unit 12 that this opens the solenoid valve 9 of the water connection 6 at low temperatures at the temperature sensor 11. As long as no water flows in the water inlet 2, this opening does not lead to a temperature increase in the water inlet 2. However, if warm water flows through the water inlet 2 into the washing machine 1, such a short-term opening leads to a steep rise in temperature and thus to a signal which occurs the flow of water indicates.

If there is water of high temperature in the water inlet 2, then the solenoid valve 8 of the cold water connection 7 is opened in order to obtain a steep drop in temperature, and thus a corresponding signal, due to a short-term drop in flowing, cold water only.
