Abstract

A pair of ice bodies each have a planar surface which are warmed to melt the surface. Then at least one of the surfaces is provided with a cavity engendered by the application of a dimension controlled heat source, suitably by engraving with a heated relief formed die-like tool having a metal engraving element of a given design. The engraving element is warmed above the ice melting temperature and brought into contact with a planar surface of the surface of the ice body so that the element melts away portions of the ice body in the area of the element and the melt water is simultaneously removed by gravity, a vacuum or by a blast of cold air. When the desired engraving depth has been attained, the planar surfaces of the ice bodies to be mated are wetted by warming and are pressed together and if needed, cooled to freeze the interface producing an assembled ice body with an internal engraving and a transparent seam. Both bodies can be engraved in mirror image fashion with the engravings aligned and mated to form a single engraving in the composite body. The engraving brilliantly stands out from its surroundings in a drink medium because of the different light refractive indices.

Description

The invention relates to a method for applying engravings to a surface of the ice body, in particular one made of clear ice according to claims 1 and 2, and a method for producing an ice body which has at least one engraving inside the ice body, according to claim 3.

From US-A-1928 067 it has become known to provide the surface of sweets with a lettering by means of a stamp-like tool.

From GB-A-831 028 a device for embossing materials and coloring the embossed surfaces has become known. This device is also particularly suitable for embossing and coloring foodstuffs, in particular ice cream.

Ice bodies are used in particular in the form of ice figures for upscale gastronomic occasions such as cold buffets, receptions and banquets for decoration and decoration, often in connection with floral decorations and effective lighting.

In addition, small ice cream bodies are used in a classic way to cool drinks in the private and social spheres.

For the optical enhancement of such ice bodies, DE-A-3 909 318 teaches to fill in an inclusion element, such as pieces of fruit or the like, in a cavity formed within an ice body due to production, to fill the cavity with water and to cool it again, so that an ice body with an inclusion body is formed.

Furthermore, it is known, for example from DE-A-3 133 616, to design ice blocks with an hammer and chisel into an ice fugure. On the other hand, this document also teaches to process a clear ice surface either simply with a knife or chisel, or with a preheated tool with built-in heating, similar to a soldering iron.

However, none of the previously known methods teaches to produce engravings on outer or inner surfaces of ice bodies, in particular clear ice bodies.

It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a method with which it is possible to apply sharp-contour engravings to the inside or outside surfaces of an ice body, and which enables such ice bodies to be engraved in large numbers.

Another object of the present invention is to provide an ice body with an engraving.

In terms of process engineering, these tasks are solved by the features of claims 1, 2 and 3.

Because a stamp-like tool is used, the embossed area of which carries relief-shaped engraving elements which are heated above the melting temperature of the ice body and which, for example, represent a mirror-image lettering, the ice bodies can be engraved quickly, with sharp contours and in large quantities.

For the sharpness of the contours, however, it is extremely important that the melt water be removed in a suitable manner, since this would otherwise damage the edges of the engraving due to melting.

The ability to mass produce comes essentially from the fact that the actual engraving, namely the contacting of the engraving elements with a surface of the ice body in a production line, can be carried out automatically - for example, time-controlled - the engraving content, e.g. lettering, if necessary in the manner of a Setting machine, as it is known from printing technology, can be exchanged freely - also automatically selectable.

Claim 3 also solves the procedural problem in this way, with the proviso that it is possible, for example, to produce ice bodies composed of two halves by engraving an approximately planar surface of an ice body part - this surface later coming to lie inside a composite ice body .

These ice creams then have an engraving on their inside, which appears particularly visually in clear ice due to the different light refraction of the usually air-filled engraving cavities.

To produce such an ice body with an engraving on the inside, the approximately flat surface to be engraved is first heated in such a way that it is wet with the surface. This is preferably done with a hot plate.

The actual engraving must then be carried out in such a way that the melt water is removed appropriately. Optionally, the surface of only one ice body can be engraved and then placed on a flat, non-engraved surface of another ice body part. However, one surface of an ice body can also be engraved, the lettering that is then created being mirror-symmetrical to one another. This inherits an even better three-dimensional effect, since the engraving cavity has approximately twice the volume as with single-surface engraving.

The still surface-wet, flat surfaces of the ice body parts are then pressed together under pressure and cooled to below the melting point of the ice body, so that a composite ice body with an engraving lying inside is obtained in the form of a cavity. It is essential in the context of the present invention that the surface-wet parts of the ice body are pressed together under pressure, since this prevents air bubbles from getting between the flat areas outside the engraving zone. Such air bubbles would on the one hand represent imperfections in the internal cohesion of the ice body surfaces, which can lead to the formation of cloudy ice, and on the other hand, if the ice bodies according to the invention are used for cooling beverages, the beverage liquid can penetrate into the interphase between the two ice bodies. Under certain circumstances, channels can also form up to the engraving cavities, as a result of which the engraving cavities fill with liquid and thus adjust their refraction of light to the beverage liquid, so that the optically brilliant impression of the engraving would disappear.

On the other hand, however, it may also be desirable to allow the engraving cavities to make specific contact with the liquid surrounding them, namely when the engraving cavities are to be filled with a colored beverage liquid, for example. This could be done in that the ice bodies with an internal engraving are first placed in a colored drinking liquid, in which they can fill with the correspondingly colored liquid, and then after a short rinse in the actual clear liquid, e.g. B. mineral water to be cooled can be given.

However, if - as is usually the case - hermetic sealing of the engraving cavities within an ice body is desired, it is advantageous to remove the ice bodies, after pressing them together under pressure, rinse them briefly with water and then cool them down, so that any gaps that may have formed in the interphase between the two ice bodies are filled with water and, after further cooling, an integral ice body with an internal engraving forms, the connecting lines of which are optical are hardly noticeable anymore.

Such ice bodies with an internal engraving can be used for a wide variety of decorative or cooling purposes.

The size of such ice bodies can vary from a few centimeters to person size or larger. However, the ice bodies of the present invention are preferably used in a small form for cooling beverages.

For example, such small ice cream bodies can be made from clear ice by making ice sheets, for example by overflowing a cooling plate with water using clear ice technology, and then dividing the sheet into individual ice cubes with a heated wire grid, the surfaces of which can then be engraved in accordance with the present invention.

The dimensions of the ice bodies can be changed in almost any shape using the thickness of the ice base plates used and the lattice constant of the wire mesh.

The subclaims have preferred embodiments of the present invention.

Further advantages and features of the present invention result from the description of an exemplary embodiment and from the drawing.

In Fig. 1, 1 denotes an ice body part, the surface 2 of which has been provided with an engraving 3. Corresponding parts of the ice body part opposite the ice body part 1 in FIG. 1 are designated with the same reference numerals, but provided with a '.

To produce an ice body 4 with an engraving 3 inside the ice body 4, two ice body parts 1 and 1 'are produced. The surfaces to be engraved are heated by means of a hot plate in such a way that they are wet on the surface.

Then each surface is engraved with a stamp-like tool, the embossing area of which has relief-shaped engraving elements made of metal which, in terms of their design, are in mirror image relation to the lettering "EIS" to be engraved. The engraving elements - in the example, letters - are heated to a temperature above the melting temperature of the ice body parts 1, 1 ', the amount of heat flowing off the ice preferably being compensated for by reheating the engraving elements, so that the engraving elements essentially remain one even during engraving have constant temperature. This is preferably achieved by means of electronic regulation.

The engraving elements are brought into contact with the surfaces 2, 2 'to be engraved until the engraving has the desired depth of penetration into the surface of the ice body having. If necessary, the engraving can be repeated several times until the desired penetration depth is reached.

The surface 2, 2 'of the ice body parts 1, 1', which are still wet on the surface, can be pressed together under pressure, but in the example it is preferred to place the ice body parts 1, 1 'on top of each other in this way under pressure in the direction of the arrows shown in FIG. 1 that the edge 5 'of the ice body part 1' is first placed on the edge 6 of the ice body part 1 and then the ice body 1 'is pushed antiparallel under sliding force under such pressure on the surface 2 of the ice body part 1 that finally the edges 5 and 5 'and the edges 6 and 6' come to lie on one another. This has the advantage that almost all air inclusions between the surfaces 2 and 2 'can be avoided by the sliding movement on the wet surfaces 2 and 2', so that no gaps can arise here, through which beverage liquid can then penetrate and the optical conciseness and Brilliance of engraving 3 can disrupt.

Aufgrund der im Beispielsfalle ausgeführten Doppelgravur der Oberflächen 2 und 2' entsteht somit eine quasi dreidimensionale Gravur im Inneren eines Eiskörpers 4.Due to the double engraving of the surfaces 2 and 2 'carried out in the example, a quasi three-dimensional engraving is thus created in the interior of an ice body 4.

Melting water removal poses a particular problem, since this melting water interferes with the sharp edges of the engraving contours if the effect is too long. This melt water is therefore preferably removed by suction.

In addition, to remove the melt water, it is already advantageous to guide the engraving tool against gravity against the surfaces 2, 2 'to be engraved, or the surfaces 2, 2' to be engraved onto the engraving tool in the direction of gravity to be pressed so that the melt water can run off in the direction of gravity.

The ice bodies 4 to be engraved particularly preferably have temperatures of approximately -9 ° C. to 0 ° C.

Using ice body parts 1, 1 'with temperatures lower than approx. -10 ° C is disadvantageous, since cracks or cracks can occur during engraving with a hot tool.

Thus, with the method according to the invention, an ice body 4 is available which, owing to its formation from clear ice, bears a lettering located in its interior - in the example "EIS". Due to its filling with air, this lettering has a different refractive index than the ice surrounding it and therefore has an excellent contrast to the ice itself as well as to the beverage liquid surrounding the ice body 4.

Such ice bodies can be used particularly advantageously for decorative cooling of food and beverages.

Claims (8)

  1. A method of applying engravings to a surface of an ice body, more particularly a transparent ice body, wherein
    a tool after the style of a punch is used for the engraving, the embossing zone of the tool having relief-like engraving elements which, in respect of their construction, are in mirror symmetry relationship to the characters to be engraved;
    the engraving elements are heated to a temperature above the melting temperature of the ice body;
    the heated engraving elements are brought into contact with the surface of the ice body so that the surface thereof melts away substantially in the area of the engraving elements;
    the melted ice is removed by moving the engraving tool in opposition to the force of gravity towards the surface for engraving or else the surface for engraving is pressed on to the tool in the direction of the force of gravity so that the melted ice can run away in the direction of the force of gravity; and
    the bringing-into-contact is continued until the engraving has the required depth of penetration into the surface of the ice body.
  2. A method of applying engravings to a surface of an ice body, more particularly a transparent ice body, wherein
    a tool after the style of a punch is used for the engraving, the embossing zone of the tool having relief-like engraving elements which, in respect of their construction, are in mirror symmetry relationship to the characters to be engraved;
    the engraving elements are heated to a temperature above the melting temperature of the ice body;
    the heated engraving elements are brought into contact with the surface of the ice body so that the surface thereof melts away substantially in the area of the engraving elements;
    the residual melted ice remaining by adhesion in the engraving recesses is removed by blowing it away with cold air or by suction extraction; and
    the bringing-into-contact is continued until the engraving has the required depth of penetration into the surface of the ice body.
  3. A method of making an ice body, more particularly an ice body of transparent ice, having at least one engraving inside the ice body, wherein
    at least two ice body parts are made which each at least have an approximately flat surface and which more particularly are so heated as to be surface-wet;
    a tool after the style of a punch is used for the engraving of such surface, the embossing zone of the tool having relief-like engraving elements which, in respect of their construction, are in mirror symmetry relationship to the characters to be engraved;
    the engraving elements are heated to a temperature above the melting temperature of the ice body part;
    the heated engraving elements are brought into contact with the flat surface of at least one ice body part so that the surface thereof melts away substantially in the area of the engraving elements and the melted ice is removed;
    the bringing-into-contact is continued until the engraving has the required depth of penetration into the surface of the ice body, and
    the surface-wet flat surfaces of the ice body parts are compressed under pressure and cooled below the melting point of the ice body so that an assembled ice body is obtained with an engraving in its interior in the form of a cavity.
  4. A method according to claim 1, 2 or 3, characterised in that engraving elements are used which represent pictorial elements and/or characters, more particularly the letters of the Roman alphabet.
  5. A method according to any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the ice bodies used for engraving have a temperature of about -10°C to +2°C, preferably -9°C to 0°C.
  6. A method according to any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that after engraving the ice body is reshaped at its outer surface.
  7. A method according to any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the temperature of the engraving elements during engraving is kept approximately constant by an electronic control means.
  8. A method according to claim 3, characterised in that the step of compressing the engraved ice body parts or an engraved and an unengraved ice body part is replaced by anti-parallel pushing together of the ice body parts, a pressing pressure being simultaneously exerted in the direction of the normal to the engraved surface.
