Definitions
- the present invention relates to an oil filter for interchangeable insertion in a filter device arranged in the oil supply line of heating oil burners, with a porous, cup-shaped filter body made of sintered polyethylene grains and with an essentially annular fastening part made of polypropylene connected to the filter body.
- the invention further relates to a manufacturing method for such an oil filter.
- the filter body and the fastening part have been manufactured separately: the filter body by sintering for several hours in an oven, the fastening part by injection molding or extrusion.
- the parts manufactured in this way are then connected to one another.
- a mutual mechanical engagement of the filter body and the fastening part is provided in the known oil filters.
- the fastening part usually engages in the cup-shaped filter body with engagement or holding means specially molded onto it.
- Oil filters with cup-shaped filter bodies are also known, the active filter surface of which is enlarged by a plurality of indentations or bulges of the side wall distributed over the circumference.
- the filter body of this oil filter has a kind of rosette shape. With molded ribs the fastening part engages a little in the filter body and there between the bulges of the side wall. As a result, there is only a relatively non-central hole in the fastening part for the oil flow.
- EP-Bl 0231 588 a method for producing a porous sintered body is known, in which a granulate of a plastic material is filled into a ceramic mold and the ceramic mold is subsequently heated by microwave radiation. The heat required to sinter the plastic granulate is transferred from the ceramic mold to it.
- the known method is characterized above all by a very short process duration of at most a few minutes.
- EP-Bl 0231 588 mentions that it is possible to fill the ceramic mold in layers with different plastic granules, which have different sintering properties, in order to obtain a sintered body with different properties in sections.
- This object is achieved according to the invention by an oil filter of the type mentioned at the outset, in which the ring-shaped fastening part, without engagement in the cup-shaped filter body, is connected exclusively to its edge, namely by partially fusing the material of the two parts to one another at the connecting surface of the two parts and / or the material of the fastening part has partially penetrated into pores of the porous filter body.
- Such an oil filter according to the invention can be produced by using the microwave sintering process already mentioned above.
- the present invention is based on the surprising finding that despite the very different melting and sintering conditions for polypropylene on the one hand and polyethylene on the other hand, it is possible to briefly heat a ceramic mold by means of microwaves in such a way that a polypropylene granulate contained therein is completely melted and liquefied In contrast, polyethylene granules in the same form are only partially melted and sintered together. A powder could also be used instead of granules.
- polypropylene granules or for the fastening part and polyethylene granules for the filter body are therefore filled together into the same ceramic mold, which is subsequently heated in a microwave oven.
- care must be taken that it is only heated to such an extent that it is heated so quickly that the heat that it transfers to the two different materials only melts at least approximately completely and Liquefaction of the polypropylene granules is not sufficient to completely liquefy the polyethylene granules.
- the heat introduced into the polyethylene granulate or powder must also be sufficient to melt it and sinter it together, at least superficially.
- the polyethylene granulate or powder can also be melted completely, as long as it does not get past a viscous or pasty state during the heating period in comparison with the polypropylene. Possibly. Controlled cooling immediately after the heating phase prevents the polyethylene from becoming too liquefied.
- the different behavior of the two plastic materials during the heating phase can also be explained, for example, by influence the choice of the grain size of the granules and by choosing a favorable melt index for both materials.
- the polyethylene should react more slowly to the heat than the polypropylene and should also remain in a viscous, rather doughy state with a high viscosity. It is convenient to use high density polyethylene and ultra high density polypropylene.
- the polypropylene As soon as the polypropylene is liquid, it can penetrate into the spaces between the grains at the interface with the still granular, possibly only surface-melted polyethylene. Furthermore, it will fuse with polyethylene already melted onto the surface of polyethylene grains. After cooling and re-solidification of both plastic materials, there is a firm and very stable connection between them.
- connection is also stable enough that an additional engagement of the fastening part in the filter body, which narrows the cross section for the oil flow, can be dispensed with in the oil filter according to the invention.
- the process described above allows the filter body and the fastening part to be produced in a fixed mutual connection in a single operation.
- the fastening part can be made flush on the inside with the inner wall of the cup-shaped filter body. Even if the cross-section of the filter body, which is preferred, is rosette-like, the fastening element can easily be flush with the side wall of the filter body, as a result of which the fastening part does not result in any narrowing of the flow cross-section for the oil in this case either.
- FIG. 2 shows the oil filter of FIG. 1 in section
- Fig. 3 is a plan view of the oil filter of Fig. 1, and
- Fig. 4 under a) and b) schematically the type of connection of the filter body * and fastener in the oil filter.
- the oil filter shown in Figures 1 to 3 has a porous filter body 1 made of sintered polyethylene grains and a fastening part 2 connected to it made of essentially solid, i.e. non-porous polypropylene.
- the filter body 1 is essentially cup-shaped with a base part 3 and a side wall 4.
- the side wall 4 is provided with a total of eight indentations or bulges to enlarge its surface over its circumference, so that the filter body 1 has a rosette-shaped cross section.
- the fastening part 2 is essentially ring-shaped. On the inside, it is flush with the inside of the side wall 4 of the filter body 1. The course of the side wall 4 is indicated in Fig. 3 by a dashed line.
- the oil enters the porous filter body 1 from the outside (arrow P1 in FIG. 2) and leaves it again (arrow P2 in FIG. 2) through the central opening 6 in the fastening part 2
- Fastening part 2 ends flush on the inside with the side wall 4 of the filter body 1, there is no cross-sectional constriction by the fastening part 2 that inhibits the oil flow.
- FIG. 4 schematically shows the conditions in the transition area between the filter body 1 and the fastening part 2, namely under a) before the heat treatment by means of the microwaves and under b) after this treatment.
- the materials, polyethylene (PE) for the filter body and polypropylene (PP) for the fastening part are each in the form of loose, unrelated granules, the granules adjoining one another.
- the polypropylene essentially forms a compact, homogeneous mass (except perhaps for individual grains, which are indicated by dashed lines in FIG. 4b), while the polyethylene granules have fused together superficially, but have been retained as grains with gaps.
- the compact fastening part made of polypropylene and the porous filter body made of polyethylene are firmly connected to one another.
