Description

The invention relates to a method for applying an all-round label to a container, the label being wrapped around the container under an adhesive connection which is effective at least in the region of the front label end and the rear label end of which is connected to the front label end in an overlapping manner.

The invention also relates to a device for applying an all-round label to a container according to the aforementioned method, which comprises a rotating container carrier having rotatingly drivable container receptacles and a labeling unit assigned to the container carrier.

In the sense of the invention, containers are understood to mean bottles and glasses made of glass or plastic, such as so-called PET bottles, and also cans made of metal for the beverage industry. The labels to be applied can consist of paper or preferably of plastic or a shrinkable polymer, for example polypropylene. The front end of the label is to be understood as that which leads in the movement bringing the container and the label into connection and therefore reaches the container first. The same applies to the rear label end.

A method and a device of the type mentioned are known from DE-A 39 10 651. This deals with the application of an all-round label that is (at least) glued in the overlap area. To ensure sufficient adhesion of the front label end to the during the wrapping process To ensure the container wall, the beginning of the label should be glued to the container at the beginning of the wrapping process. For this purpose, solvent is applied in at least one point at the beginning of the label provided with an activatable adhesive.

Similar is known from EP-A 368 011 for the case of labels that are not already provided with an activatable adhesive. It proposes to glue the area of the container that meets the front edge of the label, under whose adhesive effect the label is carried. The overlapping rear edge of the label is also glued.

These known methods and devices have the disadvantage that the label is at least partially directly connected to the container. This makes it difficult to remove the label when reusing so-called reusable containers or, more generally, when disposing of the containers.

The invention is therefore based on the object of achieving easily detachable labeling in a simple manner.

The solution according to the invention consists in the features of claim 1 and preferably those of the subclaims. Thereafter, the container wall receiving the front, adhesive-free label end is moistened, at least in places, without adhesive. In order to achieve a secure initial adhesion even under unfavorable conditions, it is also provided that the moistening is carried out by means of a large area of water film applied to the container wall.

The device for carrying out this method is characterized in that a dampening device adapted to the rotational movement of the container receptacles and the conveying path of the containers is assigned to the container carrier upstream of the labeling unit. This means that the containers sufficient opportunity is given to wet a large part of its circumferential surface. According to one embodiment, this is achieved in a safe, unproblematic manner in that the moistening device has a sponge which releases a solvent-free or adhesive-free liquid.

In the sense of an optimal arrangement and configuration of the moistening device, according to an additional proposal, the sponge has a moistening surface which runs essentially parallel to the orbit of the container carrier and contacts the circumference of the container, the moistening surface also having a length which extends at least over the distance between two container receptacles. Appropriately, water can be supplied to the sponge via drip nozzles.

It can additionally be provided that the labeling unit is assigned a gluing device which acts on the rear label end in the overlap area with the front label end.

The advantage achieved by the invention is that the large-area water moistening when applying the label without adhesive or when using plastic labels without an adhesive-producing solvent ensures reliable adhesion. The moisture film that dries afterwards leaves no residue on the container wall, whereby the label can be completely removed by tearing it open at any point.

The invention is explained below with reference to the embodiment shown in the accompanying figure.

The figure shows a schematic top view of a labeling device according to the invention. The device has a container carrier 2 which is driven continuously rotating in the direction of the arrow 1 and which runs along its orbit an inlet star 8 connected to a delivery conveyor 6 delivering 3 bottles 4 in the direction of the arrow 7 and an outlet star 13 connected to an outlet conveyor 11 leading the bottles 4 in the direction of the arrow 9 and rotating in the arrow direction 12 is assigned.

The container carrier 2 is equipped with container receptacles 14 which can be driven to rotate in the direction of the arrow 16 and which serve to hold the bottles 4, for example in a hanging formation.

In addition, a labeling unit 17 is assigned to the container carrier 2 along its orbit, consisting of a labeling cylinder 19 rotating in the direction of the arrow 18, a pressure roller 21 for feeding and applying all-round labels 22 and a gluing device 23 which comprises a glue container 24, a glue picking roller 26 and a glue application roller 27 has.

Relative to the direction of conveyance (arrow 1), the container carrier 2 is assigned upstream of a moistening device 28 which is provided with a sponge 29, the moistening surface 31 of which is curved parallel to the orbit of the container carrier 2 and which is supplied with water via drip nozzles 32. The sponge 29 or its moistening surface 31 has a length that extends essentially over the distance between two container receptacles 14.

The mode of action is as follows:
The bottles 4, which are successively transferred from the inlet star 8 to the container carrier 2, are rotated in the direction of the arrow 16 by their container receptacles 14 on their circular conveying path (arrow 1), initially passing the humidifying device 28. By wiping contact with the moistening surface 31 of the sponge 29, the bottles 4 are wetted over a large area with a film of water. On this part of the peripheral surface wetted with water subsequently transferred by the labeling cylinder 19 an all-round label 22 which is wrapped around the bottle from its front, leading end, whereby the water film creates a secure, temporary adhesion between the label and the bottle, which prevents the label from slipping and prevents slippage Transfer and tight wrapping guaranteed. At the end of the wrapping, the rear or lagging label end provided by the glue application roller 27 with a narrow glue strip overlaps the front label end on the bottle, so that both label ends are glued together. Since the initial adhesion between the label and the bottle is eliminated by the subsequent evaporation and drying of the water film, the label then only holds due to the tight wrapping secured by the end sealing and if necessary using label films through shrinkage, which if necessary without adhesive residues on the bottle is easy to solve.
