Definitions
- the invention relates to a glow plug according to the preamble of patent claim 1.
- EP-A-0 335 382 describes a rod glow plug with a solid ceramic heating rod, in the front part of which a U-shaped ceramic heating element is accommodated.
- the object of the invention is to provide a glow plug whose glow tube can be heated to a temperature of the order of 850 ° C. with a lower electrical output while the engine is running.
- a glow plug 1 with a glow plug body 3 and a glow tube 2, which is closed at its end remote from the glow plug body 3.
- a resistance wire coil 4 hereinafter referred to as the heating coil, is located in the tip of the glow tube 2, i.e. thus concentrated on the end of the glow tube 2 facing away from the glow plug body 3.
- the heating coil 4 consists of a heating wire, the resistance of which is largely independent of the temperature (e.g. Kanthal).

This achieves a certain self-regulation of the glow plug. If the current intensity in the heating coil is limited by the control electronics, a uniformly negative temperature coefficient can also be advantageous, provided that the heating coil is made of a correspondingly temperature-resistant material.
- the entire heating coil that is to say including that part of it, which may be present, which has control characteristics, is concentrated in the tip of the glow tube.
- This area is limited to max. 10 mm, preferably 4 to 7 mm, limits and occupies a range of less than 1/3 of the free glow tube length.

- the major part of the electrical energy is converted in the area of the regulating filament part of the resistance wire filament, which extends over the larger part of the glow tube length on the side facing the glow plug body. This part of the glow tube is measured in the glow plug in question by a low-resistance feedback.

Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a glow plug according to the preamble of
Measurements on diesel vehicles showed that in some driving conditions the combustion chamber temperature and thus the glow tube temperature of unheated (de-energized) glow plugs is around 400 ° C to 500 ° C. Since ignition-free operation is only achieved at a temperature above approx. 850 ° C, poor exhaust gas and noise behavior can be determined in these driving conditions. It is therefore advisable to leave the glow plugs switched on at least periodically.
In known glow plugs of the type mentioned at the beginning (DE-OS 28 02 625, DE-OS 38 25 013), the helical resistance element extends over the entire length of the glow tube. These known glow plugs require an electrical output of more than 120 W per candle in still air for a steady temperature of approx. 900 to 1000 ° C.
Such a high electrical output is not available for continuous operation, which is why a known glow plug of this type is eliminated as a permanent glow ignition exciter.
From US-A-2 898 571, a rod glow plug of the type mentioned at the outset is obtained, in which the wire-wedge-shaped resistance element is arranged in the front part of the glow tube, but offset from the actual glow tube tip.
EP-A-0 335 382 beschreibt eine Stabglühkerze mit einem massiven Keramik-Heizstab, in dessen vorderem Teil ein U-förmiges Keramik-Heizelement untergebracht ist.EP-A-0 335 382 describes a rod glow plug with a solid ceramic heating rod, in the front part of which a U-shaped ceramic heating element is accommodated.
The object of the invention is to provide a glow plug whose glow tube can be heated to a temperature of the order of 850 ° C. with a lower electrical output while the engine is running.
This object is achieved by a glow plug as characterized in

In any case, however, the entire heating coil, that is to say including that part of it, which may be present, which has control characteristics, is concentrated in the tip of the glow tube.
This area is limited to max. 10 mm, preferably 4 to 7 mm, limits and occupies a range of less than 1/3 of the free glow tube length.
- - Koaxiale Anordnung mehrerer Wicklungen
- - Verringerung des Gesamtwiderstandes
- - Reduction of the winding distance
- - Use of insulated (e.g. surface-oxidized) wires that can be wound without winding spacing.
- - Coaxial arrangement of several windings
- - Reduction of the total resistance
For electrical contacting of the
Diese Ausführungsform ist besonders für den Einsatz in Motoren mit sehr hohen Gaswechselgeschwindigkeiten und dadurch hohen Konvektionsverlusten geeignet.2 shows a further embodiment of a glow plug, in which a
Fig. 3 shows schematically the control of the glow plugs using the example of a 4-cylinder engine. An electrical switching device controls the individual glow plugs, e.g. via power switching transistors, depending on vehicle condition on and off.
All four glow plugs are operated simultaneously during the preheating phase.
In order to reduce the steepness of the inrush current, it is advantageous if the individual glow plugs are switched on in succession with a slight time delay. The duration of the preheating phase can be changed depending on various parameters, such as outside temperature, cooling water temperature, supply voltage, glow plug resistance. After the preheating period, the glow plugs are switched on in a clocked manner, so that overheating of the glow plugs is avoided. The glow plugs are designed electrically so that the desired glow plug temperature of, for example,> 850 ° C is reached in any driving condition with a duty cycle of 25%. The clocked successive switching on of the four glow plugs in such a way that the switch-on phases connect to each other without gaps and without overlap has the advantage that the on-board electrical system is loaded with an almost constant current.
Depending on the design of the electrical values of the glow plugs, it may be advantageous to add an intermediate glow phase with a 50% or 75% duty cycle after the pre-glow phase. Two or three glow plugs are then heated simultaneously.
It is particularly advantageous if the glow plugs are checked for functionality by the control device and any defects are displayed to the driver. Such a test phase can be provided both before the preheating time and in the respective clock pauses of the individual glow plugs. If a heating coil with temperature-dependent resistance is used for the glow plugs, the coil temperature can also be monitored.
In comparison to the known glow plug with a resistance wire coil extending over the entire length of the glow tube (dashed line), the glowing volume is concentrated on the glow tube tip in the glow plug according to FIG. 1 (solid line); all electrical energy is converted in the area of the glow tube tip, where the resistance wire coil is concentrated. In contrast, in the known glow plug the major part of the electrical energy is converted in the area of the regulating filament part of the resistance wire filament, which extends over the larger part of the glow tube length on the side facing the glow plug body. This part of the glow tube is measured in the glow plug in question by a low-resistance feedback. By reducing the glowing volume of the glow plug in question, the heat losses during engine operation are kept so low that with a reasonable energy (<50W) the glow tube tip assumes a temperature of> 850 ° C.
In addition, the concentration of the converted electrical energy in the glow tube tip achieves faster heating, which is shown in FIG. 5. 5 shows both the glow current over time and the surface temperature at the tip of the glow tube. The known glow plug (dashed line) begins with a high initial current peak, which leads to the heating of the control coil. Due to the increasing resistance of the control coil, the glow current decreases, and the control coil takes over most of the electrical Energy. It takes approx. 6.5 s to reach a temperature of 850 ° C at the glow tube tip and approx. 9.5 s to reach 950 ° C.
In the glow plug in question, an almost constant glow current flows during the preheating period. All of the electrical energy is converted in the tip of the glow tube and the temperature of 850 ° C is reached in 4.5 s and 950 ° C in 5.5 s. After the preheating time, the glow plug is operated with a duty cycle of 25%. As a result, the temperature curve peaks during the preheating phase, after which the temperature approaches a constant value.
A comparison of the known series glow plug and the object glow plug (FIG. 6) during engine operation with a constant heating power of approx. 40 W resulted in the following. The standard glow plug only rose slightly at every combustion chamber temperature, while the glow plug in question assumed a temperature of> 850 ° C in every driving condition. In the embodiment of the glow plug without protective tube according to FIG. 1, the temperature rises to approximately 1000 ° C. at high combustion chamber temperatures. The glow plug with protective tube according to FIG. 2 shows an almost constant temperature over the entire driving range at the tip of the glow tube. This is due to the shielding effect of the protective tube. This can further improve the life of the glow plug. At high combustion chamber temperatures, the protective tube takes on a higher temperature and thus acts as a glow ignition exciter.
Exhaust gas comparison measurements were carried out to demonstrate the effect of the continuous glow on the combustion process.
Die Heizstabtemperatur der Glühkerze gemäß Fig. 1 wurde extern auf 850°C geregelt.7 shows the exhaust gas values for a US cycle using the example of a Volkswagen Golf Diesel. Here, the series condition (without permanent annealing) was standardized to 100%. In comparison, the currently applicable US limits are plotted. 1 was externally regulated at 850 ° C.
Thanks to the better combustion, the values for hydrocarbons (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO) were significantly reduced. Due to the higher combustion temperature, the NO x value rose somewhat as expected. The improved HC and CO values indicate misfire-free operation. Particle emissions were also significantly improved by the continuous annealing, which also suggests better combustion.
Since the ignition delay is reduced by the hot glow plug tip, a further reduction in exhaust gas or particles can be expected due to a new injection timing to be determined by vehicle manufacturers.
The shortening of the ignition delay is known to result in a reduction in combustion noise and airborne noise.
It can be expected that the continuous glow in connection with other engine measures (combustion chamber design, injection timing control) will allow future particle limits to be maintained even without a soot filter.
Zusätzlich kann dieses Steuergerät noch die Einspritzsteuerung und die Überwachung der Glühkerzen übernehmen.8 schematically shows the installation of a glow plug according to FIG. 1 in a swirl chamber of a diesel engine. The central control unit records the various engine parameters and supplies the glow plugs with an appropriate heating output. This control unit can also take over injection control and monitoring of the glow plugs.
Zusätzlich führt der Mikroprozessor die Funktionsüberwachung (Diagnose) der Glühkerzen durch und meldet eventuelle Fehler an den Fahrer.FIG. 9 schematically shows the control device that is supplied with the different input variables. This data is processed according to a predetermined program in a microprocessor, which then controls the power output stage. Engine-specific data and maps can be stored in a memory module. In addition, the microprocessor performs function monitoring (diagnosis) of the glow plugs and reports any errors to the driver.
