Definitions

  • This invention relates to an improved shotgun barrel and a method of producing same which increases the accuracy and shot pattern produced by the barrel.
  • a shotgun is a firearm utilising a cartridge which includes a large number of small pellets.
  • these pellets are pushed along the barrel by a wad of packing material until the pellets exit the barrel at which point they start to spread.
  • the amount by which the pellets spread provides a characteristic shot pattern which can be imprinted on a target placed in front of the shotgun.
  • the spread or depression of the pellets in this pattern increases according to the range of the target from the shotgun muzzle.
  • the invention provides a method of producing an improved shotgun barrel comprising the steps of removing the shotgun barrel from its stock and breech assembly, depositing on the internal barrel surface a coating material, so as to form on said exposed internal surfaces a plurality of parallel lands, of a predetermined substantially constant height and replacing barrel on such stock and breech assembly.
  • the material used for deposition on the internal barrel surface is preferably wear resistant, for example chrome, PTFE or a similar plastic substance. Chrome is also known to be deposited on the internal barrel surface of a shotgun in order to stop corrosion thereof and therefore it is advantageous to combine this with the method according to the invention.
  • lands are provided on the barrel's interior wall arranged equidistantly around the internal wall and advantageously between 2 and 4 thousandths of an inch high.
  • the invention also provides an improved shotgun barrel including a plurality of lands on the inner barrel surface, said lands being formed of material deposited on to the barrel's inner surface, and being substantially straight and parallel to the barrel's axis.
  • the lands are between 2 and 4 thousandths of an inch proud of the barrel's inner surface.
  • the lands are formed of chrome or a similar wear resistant material.
  • a shotgun barrel 10 is formed according to usual manufacturing procedures. After being finished according to requirements the barrel 10 is subjected to a material deposition process, for example chrome deposition, operative to form lands on the barrel's internal surface 12.
  • a material deposition process for example chrome deposition
  • Such deposition is by any known process and the deposition of the material to form lands may be by masking areas between lands or by arranging for material to be attracted to the areas on which land formation is required.
  • the lands may be formed using known material deposition processes for example chrome deposition in that the inner surface of the barrel is repeatedly subjected to a material deposition process with the material being restricted to a specific area of the barrel until the lands 14 are built up around the barrel's inner surface.
  • chrome is preferable in that it is already known to chrome the inner surface of a barrel to prevent corrosion and thereby the two processes may be combined other materials may also be used providing they meet the necessary physical characteristics.
  • other metals may also be suitable as may some plastics for example, PTFE or other similar materials.
  • the chrome is deposited so as to form a plurality of lands 14 of which there are six in the preferred embodiment illustrated. These lands are formed so that they stand proud of the internal surface 12 by between 2 and 4 thousandths of an inch. Lands of this depth are effective in channelling the shotgun charge and prevent rotation of the wad whilst still providing minimal impedance to the passage of the wad and the pellets.
  • the lands 14 are provided along the entire length of the barrel and are arranged so as to be parallel at all points to the barrel's central axis. Thus, the lands 14 effectively provide straight rifling of the barrel 10.
  • the improved shotgun barrel according to the invention provides a significant decrease in the amount of spread in a shotgun charge and hence greatly increased accuracy at all ranges.
  • the evenly spaced lands act as straight rifling and retard the wad's natural tendency to spin which would throw the shot into an eccentric circle. Additionally the lands prevent any wad rotation which would be caused by irregularities on the barrel surface.
  • the addition of lands by way of a material deposition process does not effect the safety of the original barrel construction and therefore would not require additional safety checks before use was possible.
  • a further advantage is that the lands may be retrofittted to any existing barrel assembly thus enabling an existing shotgun to be modified according to an aspect of the invention.
  • the barrel may be fully plated or covered to the required land depth and the excess material removed by machinery or another similar method.
