Abstract

An axially movable sleeve (36) has interference members or lugs (38) associated with the split nut (34) in a chuck. When the chuck is driven by the spindle (18), the axially movable interference members (38) engage the split nut interference members (40) and are restrained from rotation. The nut (34) is also restrained and the chuck jaws (30) open or close depending upon the direction of rotation of the chuck body (24). The sleeve (36) is positioned to be engaged by the jaws (30) as they approach the full open position. The jaws (30) then move the sleeve (36) axially to disengage the interference members (40, 38) and stop further opening of the jaws (30) before they reach a position to wedge or jam in the open position.

Description

Claims

AMENDED CLAIMS
[received by the International Bureau on 4 September 1989 (04.09.89) original claim 2 cancelled ; claim 1 amended ; claims 3 - 10 renumbered as claims 2 - 9 ( 3 pages)]
1. A chuck having a body, three jaws mounted on said body on inclined axes equally spaced around the body, a split nut encircling said jaws and having a threaded connection with the jaws whereby said jaws move on said inclined axes in response to relative rotation between said body and said split nut whereby the jaws move forwardly and inwardly to close or rearwardly and outwardly to open, a retainer having a press fit on said split nut to retain said split nut assembled, means for holding said split nut against rotation with said chuck body, said means including a sleeve member mounted on said body for axial movement toward and away from said split nut between first and second positions, first interference members integral with said sleeve and second interference members integral with said split nut and operative when engaged by reason of movement of said sleeve axially toward said split nut to engage said interference members of said sleeve with said second interference members of said split nut to prevent rotation of said split nut when said sleeve is restrained against rotation, whereby rotation of said body results in relative rotation between said body and said split nut and causes said jaws to open or close dependent upon the direction of rotation of said body relative to said nut, the force of impacts on said second interference members acting directly on said split ring and there being no transmission of impact force from said second interference members through said press fit to said split ring.
2. The combination according to Claim 1 including means restraining said sleeve from rotation with said clutch body.
3. The combination according to Claim 2 including means biasing said sleeve away from said split nut.
4. The combination according to Claim 1 including means biasing said sleeve towards said split nut.
5. A chuck according to Claim 1 in which, said inclined axes are positioned relative to the axis of the chuck body so that the jaws move forwardly and inwardly on the axes toward a fully closed position and rearwardly and outwardly on said inclined axes towards a fully open position, said means for holding said split nut against rotation comprising a sleeve mounted on said body for axial movement, the outside of said sleeve being manually engaged to move said sleeve axially, said jaws engaging the inside of said sleeve as the jaws approach said fully open position so that the sleeve is moved to disengage said second interference members from said first interference members.
6. The combination according to Claim 5 including an undercut groove on the interior of said sleeve in alignment with said jaws when said interference members are engaged so said jaws will push against said groove as said interference members on said sleeve are disengaged from said interference members on said split nut.
7. The combination according to Claim 6 in which said groove includes a surface generally normal to the path of said jaws.
8. The combination according to Claim 7 including means restraining said sleeve from rotat ion with said chuck body.
9. The combination according to Claim 8 including means biasing said sleeve away from said split nut.
STATEMENT UNDER ARTICLE 19
Claim 1 as now presented corresponds to Claim 6 in the
U.S. case. It is believed clear that the principal reference is the Stoner reference. Claim 1 distinguishes over Stoner in specifying "interference members integral with the sleeve and interference members integral with the split nut." This is not found in Stoner. In Stoner, the joint between the split nut 21 and the member 20 is forced to transmit impact blows just like the prior art to which the present application refers in the first paragraph of the specification. As a matter of fact,
Stoner compounds the problem in that he also has a joint between parts 32 and 30 which will also be subjected to transmission of impact. The purpose of the present design is to avoid transmission of force through a press fit as specified in the last clause of Claim 1. There may be some very slight force between the split ring and retaining ring in applicant's design, but that is not transmitting an operating driving force. Palm '918 transmits force through the press fit of nut
32 into ring or sleeve 34. Thus, Palm is not relevant or responsive to Claim 1. Hatfield also transmits impacts through the press fit and is not responsive to Claim 1.
