Description

The present invention relates to a powder coating booth, in particular electrostatic powder coating, for coating objects, in particular metallic objects.

The application of powdered organic resins, replacing traditional liquid paints, has become industrial for about thirty years, and in particular the technique of coating objects by electrostatic powdering is now very widespread. Whatever powder sprayers are used, either manual or automatic, the powdering is carried out in a powdering booth making it possible to confine powder mist and, by a vacuum created in the booth, to recover the excess. The recovered powder is filtered and then recycled.

In the event of a color change, it is necessary, before spraying the new powder, of another color, to clean the interior of the cabin beforehand to remove all traces of the powder of the first color, otherwise there is would pollute the new powder with the old. This cleaning operation is quite long, which, due to the fact that it requires stopping the powdering installation, severely penalizes the performance of this installation.

The invention aims to remedy this drawback by means of a powder spraying booth which requires a time interval for the color change which is much less than that required for booths of the prior art. It relates to a powder coating booth with rigid external walls and bottom suction, these external walls being lined internally over all or part of their surface by another rigid wall permeable to air. The interval between these two walls delimits a space in which a vacuum is applied capable of causing the plating on this permeable wall of at least one flexible, consumable and waterproof sheet, capable of covering it over all or part of its surface which is outside the suction area from the bottom.

  • Figure 8 is a partial and simplified top view of the cabin in Figure 7.

Referring to Figures 1 to 4, this electrostatic powder coating booth 1 is a booth for automatic installation of coating of objects (not shown) which are continuously scrolled, suspended from metal hooks 40 which circulate on a conveyor 3 connected to ground of the installation.

    - une ouverture frontale 4 et une ouverture arrière 5, appelées "silhouettes" et aptes à livrer passage aux objets à revêtir ;
    - une ouverture, ou fente, longitudinale 6, pratiquée dans le toit 18 de la cabine 1 et apte à livrer passage au convoyeur 3 ;
    - sur chacune des deux grandes faces latérales 7,8 de la cabine, deux ouvertures 9,10 de passage des projecteurs automatiques de poudre 11,12, et une ouverture 13 de passage d'un projecteur manuel (non représenté).
The cabin 1 has a generally parallelepiped shape, and is provided with several openings:
- A front opening 4 and a rear opening 5, called "silhouettes" and able to give passage to the objects to be coated;
- A longitudinal opening, or slot 6, made in the roof 18 of the cabin 1 and capable of delivering passage to the conveyor 3;
- On each of the two large side faces 7, 8 of the cabin, two openings 9, 10 for passage of the automatic powder projectors 11, 12, and an opening 13 for passage of a manual projector (not shown).

Cette aspiration est réalisée par une dépression appliquée à l'intérieur du socle creux 15 de la cabine, ce socle contenant en outre les rouleaux 16 de support et d'avancement du tapis sans fin 14.Traditionally, the floor of the cabin is composed of an endless filtering rotating belt 14 through which a suction is applied which puts the cabin in depression with respect to the ambient atmosphere outside it. This suction is achieved by a vacuum applied inside the hollow base 15 of the cabin, this base also containing the rollers 16 for supporting and advancing the endless belt 14.

The filter strip 14 circulates in the opposite direction to the direction F of advancement of the parts on the conveyor 3. A suction ramp 17 is placed downstream of this endless belt 14 and recovers the powder which has deposited on this carpet 14.

Cette double paroi 19 est placée à une distance de 3 à 5 centimètres de la paroi extérieure 7,8,18.According to the invention, the side faces 7, 8 of the cabin and its roof 18 are lined internally by a metal wall 19 pierced with numerous holes 20. This double wall 19 is placed at a distance of 3 to 5 centimeters from the wall exterior 7,8,18.

The space 21 between the two walls is placed under vacuum relative to the interior of the cabin by means of a medium pressure turbine not shown. The double perforated wall 19 is supported by spacers 22 (FIG. 4) and the lateral openings 9, 10, 13 and upper 6 of the cabin are bordered internally by a tube 23, of square section, the face 24 looking towards the interior of the cabin is constituted by a porous sintered material, such as porous bronze. A vacuum greater than that prevailing in the space 21 is applied to the interior of the tubes 23 by another turbine, not shown.

On either side of the slot 6, the roof 18 of the cabin carries two rows of rollers 25, 26. Similarly, the large lateral faces 7 and 8 carry, at their lower part, two horizontal rows 27, 28 of rollers of the same diameters as the other rollers 25, 26. As for the rollers 25, 26, the rollers 27, 28 are placed on the outer face of the walls 7 and 8. All of these rollers 25 to 28 can optionally be motorized, by conventional means not shown, so as to rotate by controlled manner in the directions indicated by the arrows in Figure 2.

Between the base of each of the walls 7,8 and the base 1 is formed, over almost the entire length of these walls, a slender space defining for these walls 7,8 of the lower longitudinal slots 29 and 30.

The rollers 28 and 25 respectively serve as downstream winders and upstream unwinders for a consumable sheet 31 of flexible plastic material, for example from 0.05 to 0.15 mm thick polyethylene. Likewise, the rollers 27 and 26 serve respectively as downstream winders and upstream unwinders for another consumable sheet 32 identical to the sheet 31.

The installation being stopped, it is first of all about coating the internal walls of the cabin, except carpet 14, with the plastic sheets 31 and 32. For this, the rollers 25 to 28 are rotated so as to allow a sufficient quantity of plastic sheet 31.32 to hang down, as drawn in dashed lines in FIG. 2. rotation of the rollers, and a relatively high vacuum is applied in the space 21 using the medium pressure turbine, for example of the order of 200 to 300 millimeters of water column. The operator then enters the cabin and manually applies the sheets 31 and 32 against the perforated walls 19, after having cut through the orifices for passage for the automatic pistols 11,12. Plating of the plastic sheets against the perforated walls 19 is ensured by the vacuum existing in the space 21. Of course, an even stronger vacuum is applied in the tubes 23, which allows, taking into account the good regularity of suction provided by the porous walls 24, to guarantee a good seal around the openings.

The internal walls of the cabin being coated in a sealed manner by the sheets 31, 32, as drawn in solid lines in FIG. 2, or optionally cutting through the orifice 13 a passage in the plastic sheet for a manual pistol and we put the installation on the way, preferably by lowering the vacuum in the space 21 to reduce the noise level: for this the turbine speed is adjusted until a vacuum of the order of 120 millimeters of water column is obtained .

To make a change of color thereafter, all the depressions are released, so that the sheets 31 and 32 resume their loose position drawn in dashed lines in FIG. 2, then the rollers 25 to 27 are rotated up to 'that the polluted parts of 31.32 are replaced by clean parts. The operations described above are then repeated.

Of course, the invention is not limited to the embodiment which has just been described. It applies equally well to a manual application booth with front opening, without passing a conveyor. The perforated inner wall may be made of plastic or other material of sufficient rigidity to withstand a depression of a few centimeters of column of water applied between the two walls. The flexible sheets used can be made of paper, aluminum, metallized plastic film, or the like. These sheets can be applied manually in the form of separate layers, if there are no devices with unwind rollers and reels. For a half cabin, you can use a single protective sheet corresponding to the size of the ceiling, floor, vertical wall and silhouetted walls. It will generally be advantageous, to facilitate the positioning of the sheet, to provide rounded corners and to provide an angle greater than 90 degrees between the bottom wall and the silhouette wall. As an example of this last characteristic, FIGS. 5 and 6 very schematically represent, in cross section and in partial view from above, a variant of the previous cabin 1, here with a pyramidal bottom 50 and conventional suction duct 51 , and rounded angles greater than 90 degrees between the different parts of the double wall 19. The format of the protective film is often greater than the dimensions of the walls to be protected, the excess will be easily cut by following the edges of these walls.

The powder coating booth shown in Figures 7 and 8 is improved compared to the previous ones in the sense that it allows semi-automatic positioning of the protective film. In addition, this cabin is equipped with mechanical means helping to press this film against its side walls.

In this example, this is a cabin fairly close to that of FIG. 5, in the sense that the suction of the unposed powder is carried out via a split tube 60, of slightly frustoconical shape, which is placed at the bottom of this cabin. For the rest, this cabin is essentially similar to that of FIG. 1, with a few minor differences: the upstream rollers 25,26 and downstream 27,28 are each in one piece and rest on roller supports 61, the cabin has on each side face three openings 10 passage for automatic powder projectors, and always a single opening 13 passage for a manual projector. By way of illustration, there is also shown at 62 the tubes for bringing the above-mentioned space into depression 21.

On the other hand, this cabin has two complementary means intended to allow the establishment of the plastic sheets 31 and 32 without an operator having to penetrate inside the cabin. These two means are as follows:
- on the external part of each of the side walls 7, 8 of the cabin, four sliding doors 63, 64 are provided which are suspended from a common rail 64 and which are capable of completely obstructing, and in an almost airtight manner, the four openings 13 and 10 for the passage of the powder spray guns.
- At each of the longitudinal ends of the cabin are provided two vertical arms 65, which are articulated around a vertical axis 66 and which are recalled, by springs 67, in position of support against the faces inside walls 7 and 8 (see figure 8). Locking hooks not shown make it possible to maintain, if desired, the arms 67 at a distance from their bearing walls 7 and 8; these arms occupy most of the height of the cabin.

To effect the color change with this cabin, the four arms 65 are first of all manually removed to release the sheets 31 and 32 from their grip. The sliding doors 63 and 64 are operated to allow them to obstruct the side openings 10, 13 for the passage of the powder spray guns (the latter have been previously retracted). The motorized downstream rollers 27,28 are then started up to advance the plastic sheets 31,32 by a sufficient amount. The four arms 65 are then unlocked, which are pressed against the ends of these sheets 31,32 under the action of the springs 67. This creates a practically closed suction space between the sheets 31,32 (which are for the dangling moment as drawn in dashed lines in FIG. 2) and the internal walls of the cabin, so that, by applying the vacuum in the aforementioned inter-wall space 21, the automatic plating of these sheets 31 is brought about, 32 against these internal walls, which represents an interesting improvement over the previously described cabs. Note of course that, in any event, it will always be advantageous to provide arms 65, even on the booths described above, in order to improve the retention of the sheets 31, 32 against the internal walls of the booth.
