Description
- The field of the present invention is strut assemblies. More particularly, the field of the present invention is foldable or collapsible strut assemblies.
- Strut assemblies have a variety of applications and are used, for example, in scaffolds, antennas, as supports for doors or panels, and in a variety of other applications involving collapsible structures. Strut assemblies having two adjoining members pivotally linked together with an overlying springloaded sleeve employed to provide a rigid interconnection between the members have been successfully used in the past in various applications. However, these known strut assemblies involved significant disadvantages in certain applications.
- In particular, when employed to hold up a hinged panel or door such as e.g., an access panel on an aircraft, wherein two or more strut assemblies are used, it has been necessary to retract the sleeves on all of the struts attached to the panel simultaneously, so as to allow the struts to undergo a uniform folding movement together. In addition, in fairly common applications, even where only two struts are used to hold open a panel, the struts are spaced far enough apart so that the two struts are not simultaneously within the reach of a single mechanic or service technician. Therefore, in order to close the panel, a second individual must provide assistance, so that each of the sleeves can be simultaneously retracted to the release position and the struts folded. Of course, this requirement for an extra "helping hand" simply to allow the panel to be closed can be costly and time consuming.
- A strut similar to the above is disclosed in US-A-4 318 559 upon which is based the prior art portion of claim 1 although in this prior proposal a lock is provided for selectively preventing retraction of the sleeve.
- The present invention, as characterised in claim 1, is directed to a collapsible strut assembly having a retractable locking sleeve which may be selectively retained in the retracted, or unlocked, position for collapse of the strut. In providing selective retention in the unlocked condition, an operator may more easily collapse the plurality of such struts. In this way, multiple operators and wasted time are avoided.
- To accomplish the foregoing, the member is biased to interfere with the extension of the sleeve to the locked position so that it may be used to retain the locking sleeve in the retracted position. The member is withdrawable from interference with the sleeve upon collapse of the strut assembly due to the action of the stop limiting relative pivotal movement between the member and the link. In this way, upon subsequent erection, the locking sleeve will again automatically assume the locked position.
- DE-C-865 945 discloses a detent mounted for movement longitudinally of one section for selective engagement with different recesses in a second section pivoted to the one section for determining the angle of extent of the second section relative to one section. The detent is retractable by sliding movement of a sleeve carried by the one section. There is no suggestion of a member which can operate automatically to prevent movement of the sleeve and yet which is positively moved out of the part of the sleeve responsive to folding of the strut due to the stop limiting relative movement of the stop and member as provided by the present invention.

- Fig. 1 is a side view of the strut assembly of the present invention in the open or erected position;
- Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional side view of the strut assembly of Fig. 1;
- Fig. 3 is a side elevation view, partially in section, of the strut assembly of Fig. 1 in the collapsed or closed position; and
- Fig. 4 is a fragmentarily side view in cross section of the strut assembly of Fig. 1 in the open position illustrating the sleeve in the retracted position.
- Turning in detail to the drawings, a strut assembly includes a
first section 10 having a supportedend 12 and jointedend 14. Asecond section 16 also includes a supportedend 18 and a jointedend 20. The supported 12 and 18 are typically to be associated with a frame or body and a panel. The panel is likely to be pivotally mounted to the frame or body and is held outwardly therefrom by one or more strut assemblies. In order that the assemblies may collapse, the supportedends 12 and 18 are both pivotally associated with the body or panel atends 22 and 24, respectively. Thus, for example, thepivot points pivot point 22 may be the point of attachment of the strut assembly to the frame or body while thepivot point 24 may be the point of attachment to a door or panel. - The
14 and 20 of the sections are pivotally joined by means of ajointed ends link 26. Thelink 26 is joined to thejointed end 14 by means of apin 28. Similarly, thelink 26 is pivotally joined with thejointed end 20 by means of apin 30. Thus, the strut assembly may collapse or extend by relative pivotal movement of thefirst section 10 and thesecond section 16 associated by means of thelink 26. The 14 and 20 are configured for association with thejointed ends link 26 and the relative movement therebetween. Each 14 and 20 includes aend slot 32 and 34, respectively. This slot accommodates passage of thelink 26 to a orientation perpendicularto each of the 10 and 16, as best seen in Figure 3. Naturally, each of thesections 10 and 16 are open at thehollow sections 14 and 20 for receipt of thejointed ends link 26 when extended, such as illustrated in Figures 2 and 4. - Associated with the
first section 10 is asleeve 36 which is slidably disposed on the outer surface of thefirst section 10. Thesleeve 36 is shown to be knurled for purposes of easy manual purchase. Associated with thesleeve 36 is acompression spring 38. Thecompression spring 38 is retained between thesleeve 36 and apin 40. Thus, thesleeve 36 is resiliently biased to a position over the 14 and 20. To limit the extension of thejointed ends sleeve 36, asecond stop pin 42 is provided on thesecond section 16. Thus, thecompression spring 38 may remain under compression even with thesleeve 36 fully extended to thepin 42. Thus, positive retention of thesleeve 36 in the locked position is achieved. Thespring 38 is also of sufficient length to allow substantial compression thereof as thesleeve 36 is retracted from the joint to a position as illustrated in Figure 4. - Associated with the
link 26 and pinned relative thereto on thepin 28 is aretaining member 44. The retainingmember 44 extends to abevelled end 46 displaced from thepin 28. Thebevelled end 46 is sufficiently displaced from thepin 28 that it may be oriented to extend into the path of travel of thesleeve 36, as best seen in Figure 4. In this orientation, theretaining member 44 extends outwardly through the slot 32. To prevent rotation beyond a predetermined angle relative to thelink 26, theretaining member 44 includes astop 48 which extends laterally of the retainingmember 44 adjacent thelink 26. As seen in the preferred embodiment and in Figures 3 and 4 specifically, thestop 48 prevents movement of the retainingmember 44 relative to thelink 26 beyond a 90 degree orientation thereto. - The retaining
member 44 is biased toward the position of engagement with thesleeve 36. A detentmechanism including ball 50 biased by acompression spring 52 extends into the path of movement of thebevelled end 46 of the retainingmember 44. Thebevelled end 46 is in angled contact with theball 50 so that thebevelled end 46 tends to slip off the ball when free to do so. - The
compression spring 52 also rests against thepin 40 within the hollow jointedend 14 of thefirst section 10. - Turning to the operation of the strut assembly, for ease of description an extended and locked condition is first assumed. Such a condition is illustrated in Figure 1. With the
sleeve 36 extending over the 14 and 20, the strut assembly is extended and locked. The retainingjointed ends member 44 is positioned within thesleeve 36, as illustrated in Figure 2. Thebiased ball 50 in turn biases the retainingmember 44 outwardly against thesleeve 36. - To collapse the strut, the
sleeve 36 is gripped and retracted from over the joinedend 20. As thesleeve 36 is fully retracted, the biased retainingmember 44 is uncovered and springs outwardly under the influence of thebias ball 50. The retainingmember 44 then stops as thestop 48 encounters thelink 26. Having exposed the retainingmember 44, thesleeve 36 may then be released to a position as illustrated in Figure 4. In this position, thesleeve 36 cannot return to the locked position because of the extension of theretainer member 44 into its path of travel. Because of thestop 48, the retainingmember 44 cannot continue to swing out of the path of travel of thesleeve 36; and thus, Figure 4 illustrates a stable condition for thesleeve 36. In this condition, the 10 and 16 are free to collapse when given a lateral push from the side of the assembly having thesections slots 32 and 34. When collapsed, the strut assembly assumes a position as illustrated in Figure 3. - In the collapse of the strut assembly, the
link 26 is pivotally rotated relative to thefirst section 10. Because the retainingmember 44 is already extended to interference between thestop 48 and thelink 26, as thelink 26 rotates, the retainingmember 44 is also rotated. As the retainingmember 44 rotates, it further retracts thesleeve 36 to a small extent and then pushes theball 50 away in opposition to the biasing force of thespring 52. When fully collapsed, the retainingmember 44 is arranged such that thebevelled end 46 extends against theball 50. Having retracted the retainingmember 44 from engagement with thesleeve 36, the sleeve is free to move forwardly until it engages thelink 26, as seen in Figure 3. This position is arranged such that thebevelled end 46 of the retainingmember 44 is now covered by thesleeve 36. As the first and 10 and 16 are again extended, thesecond sections link 26 is likewise extended and the retainingmember 44 may move outwardly under the influence of thebias ball 50. However, the retainingmember 44 comes into contact with thesleeve 36 and cannot interfere with its path of travel. As the jointed ends 14 and 20 become aligned, thesleeve 36 may progress to thepin 42 to again lock the strut assembly in its extended arrangement. - Thus, a folding strut assembly is disclosed which may be locked in the extended position by a slidable sleeve. The assembly also provides for an unattended unlocked condition for facilitating a collapse of a plurality of struts.
