Definitions
- the subject of the present invention is a cable consisting of a strand of multifilament aromatic polyamide son of the "Kevlar" type (trade mark registered by DU PONT DE N EMOURS) or the like intended to constitute a handling cable for crane, transporter bridge or machine. analog, in which there are many cable routes.
- the handling cables are subjected to a very large number of flexions resulting in particular from the fact that these cables are caused to be wound on pulleys whose diameters can be relatively small.
- the handling cables currently in service are generally made from several metal strands. Each strand comprising a determined number of metal wires is wired on appropriate machines so as to form superimposed layers. Some of these metallic cables can have a central textile core.
- the metallic cables are generally multi-strand and include, for example, from three to thirty-four strands.
- the problem specific to handling cables stems from the fact that they must have, on the one hand, good tensile strength to allow handling of loads which may be heavy, and, on the other hand, good flexural strength.
- An angle gear created by a pulley results in a sliding of the outer layers with respect to the inner layers, these sliding coming from the difference in the radii of curvature during bending.
- the layers and the strands constituting the cable cause overheating and abrasion, which shortens the service life of the cable.
- the differential elongations are the cause of premature fatigue of the crystalline metal.
- the traditional solution to solve this problem consists in introducing inside the cable a lubricant usually liquid but which can be a heavy bitumen, but this introduction leads to sealing problems in order to avoid the migration of lubricants.
- the steel cables currently in use suitably withstand the tensile forces and the bending forces which they undergo. We know substantially the life of a cable in hours of use, and we change it before any threat of breakage that could have very damaging consequences.
- the steel cables are heavy and relatively rigid, their weight reducing the payload of the machine.
- Keviar or Twaron cables were also additionally lubricated by incorporating an appropriate lubricant inside them. The results obtained have been disappointing, the number of flexions admissible by these cables being at best five times less than the number of flexions admissible by a steel cable of the same diameter.
- the patent US-A-4,095,404 (BABAYAN) has already proposed to use for electric cables reinforcement wires intended to support metal wires carrying strong power currents or weak telecommunication currents.
- the reinforcing reinforcement is constituted by aramid wires coated with a polyurethane resin.
- the wires do not rub against each other, which prevents their destruction by self-abrasion.
- the aramid threads are protected by a polyurethane lacquer in a proportion of 15 to 40% by weight, dried then twisted and then heated to the melting temperature of the polyurethane resin.
- a mixed, metal-aramid cable is thus obtained which has a higher flexural strength than that of high-strength steel.
- this cable cannot constitute a good handling cable brought to undergo a large number of flexions, because the impregnation is superficial and has a resistance to friction clearly lower than that of a homogeneous composite material.
- the present invention relates to a high performance cable, in particular with regard to bending fatigue.
- the aromatic polyamide cable is characterized in that it is cabled according to the method of wiring metallic cables, the aramid fibers or filaments being impregnated through with a binder having a excellent abrasion resistance, a good coefficient of friction on itself and an elongation greater than that of aramid.
- Each element constituting the cable according to the present invention is a composite, homogeneous, solid wire, the aromatic polyamide and the binder being intimately amalgamated, as defined above, of well defined section according to the construction chosen.
- impregnation products are to constitute, as it were, solid lubricants which have the advantage, after bending, of returning to their original state by elasticity.
- the elongation coefficient at break of the impregnating binders is greater than that of aramid.
- the wiring gives the aramid a turn effect allowing the desired flexions to be obtained by deformation of the turns, although the elongation at break of the aramid is between 2 and 4%.
- the abrasion resistance of the binder is exceptional and the aramid yarns impregnated at the heart of this binder have a good sliding coefficient.
- a radially elastic central core constitutes a guide for subsequent windings without intervening in traction. By its capacity of elastic compression, the central core makes it possible to limit the stresses undergone by the external wires since the internal wires can partially be inserted in the elastic core.
- the central core is constituted by a polyurethane horsehair of Shore hardness close to 95 A.
- the cable shown is a textile cable of the metallic cabled type. It has a central core 1, a first layer of aramid yarns 2 multifilaments, each filament being coated, a second layer 3 of aramid yarns concentric with the second layer, a third layer 4 of aramid yarns concentric with the previous ones, the assembly being shaped in an outer sheath or cover 5.
- a cable 12mm in diameter is constituted by a single-core 1 by a layer 2 of 6 aramid wires impregnated with a layer 3 of 12 aramid wires and a layer 4 of 18 aramid wires.
- Each wire is made up of 1000 multifilaments milled in multiples according to needs, the wires being wired at equal steps or equal angle.
- a polyurethane film 6 is incorporated between the outer layer 4 and the cover 5.
- this film prevents the cover from slipping relative to the rest of cable and as a result of blistering or the like.
- the cover 5 is, for example made by braiding polyester.
- the aramid yarns 2, 3 and 4 are made from aramid multifilaments impregnated at heart by the process described in patent No. 80 20663 (FR-A-2 491 098).
- Figure 4 shows in section to scale enlarged a thread made up of multifilaments 7 coated and impregnated with a binder 8.
- the aramid filaments are impregnated with a polyurethane solution in a proportion of 40 to 60% by weight.
- a polyurethane solution in a proportion of 40 to 60% by weight.
- the multifilaments being coated with polyurethane, it is liable to undergo folding and to return to its initial position under the elastic action of the return resulting from the polyurethane.
- the polyurethane applied in liquid solution spreads on the one hand between the multifilaments, and on the other hand outside the thread to which it is possible to give a regular section by the intermediary of a sector.
- the central core plays an essential role.
- this core was only intended to constitute a guide for the stranding of the outer wires.
- the central textile core for example also made of polyurethane, is intended to compensate for certain variations in the internal diameter of the layer 2 by deforming radially, for example at the time of bending, and by resuming its usual geometry as soon as the effort due to said flexion is relaxed.
- the following table shows the results obtained on a machine working in alternating bending.
- the tests were carried out with lubricated aramid cables, respectively in D 1000 Twaron (3% sizing rate), in D 1020 Twaron (9% sizing rate), in Kevlar T 960 type (size ratio 9%), and in Kevlar type T 961 (size ratio 3%).
- the diameter of these cables is 12mm
- the core wired according to the steel technique, consisting of 15,000 denier wires: 18 wires for the outer layer, 12 wires for the middle layer, 6 wires for the lower layer, wired at the same pitch
- the central core being a textile cord made of multi-filament polyamide fixed in composition 1680 denier 4x3, polyester braiding on polyurethane film completing the cable structure.
- the nominal breaking strength is 8000 Dan, the force on one strand being 1600 Dan.
- the numbers indicated represent the number of complete alternating bending performed before breaking.
- the aramid cables break after a maximum number of alternating bending which is of the order of 40,000.
- the number of alternating bending is of the order of 45,000 to 150,000 depending on the construction and in a cable manufactured according to the present invention, the number of alternating flexions which can be supported is greater than 300,000 and can reach 1,500,000. The tests were carried out on a machine allowing them, the cables being under tension, to make them undergo alternate bending.
- the cable is a mono-strand cable with parallel wires of the WARRINGTON-SEALE type.
- the advantage of this cable is that it makes it possible to use wires of different diameters, which results in better filling of the cable by the wires and consequently the increase in the resistance thereof with correlative reduction in interstices.
- Another advantage of this type of wiring is that the length of the wires making up the wiring is much better controlled than in the case of textile cables in which the elasticity of the material leads to a kind of self-regulation.
- the aramid multifilaments being completely impregnated and twisted are coated with a binder which is the subject of the aforementioned patent.
- the coefficient of this binder on itself is minimum at the temperatures reached during the alternating bending tests. In fact, the lower this coefficient of friction, the lower the temperatures and the choice of binder is therefore linked to its temperature resistance.
- the polyurethane described above can be replaced by various binders having the aforementioned fundamental characteristics: abrasion resistance, slip coefficient, flexibility, compatible with the process described in patent 80 20663 (FR-A-2 491 098): interfilament impregnation , calibration-smoothing.
- the polyurethane can be replaced by an extrudable polyvinylidene fluoride copolymer, at 400% elongation (type 10010 SOLEF). In any event, the impregnation rate exceeds 30% by weight.
- each layer of wires a wrapping with a film with a good coefficient of friction, the voids existing between each of the wires being able to be filled with a grease or a lubricating product.

Abstract
Description
- - les figures 2 et 3, des vues en coupe verticale et en perspective d'un câble selon l'invention câblé selon la technique métallique ;
