Abstract

A return line (18, 19, 21) is provided for returning exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine and leads from the exhaust side to the intake side of the internal combustion engine. A valve (20) for controlling the return rate is arranged in the line (18, 19, 21). In order to prevent the formation of condensates in the exhaust-side line when the valve is closed, a purge line (22) is provided which leads from the exhaust-side line section (18, 19) to a point with a lower pressure than the exhaust side.

Description

Stand der TechnikState of the art

The invention relates to a device according to the preamble of the main claim.

It is known to provide internal combustion engines with so-called exhaust gas recirculation in order to improve the exhaust gas quality. A bypass line leads from the exhaust side of the internal combustion engine to the intake side. A valve is provided in the bypass line, which is controlled according to predetermined criteria for setting the return rate. Such a device is known for example from DE-OS 29 09 465 = US Pat. No. 4,333,440.

In the case of cylinder heads with valves lying side by side, the exhaust gas recirculation line is generally quite short for structural reasons alone. However, in the case of engines with a crossflow cylinder head, this type is one relatively long piping from the exhaust side to the intake side required. If the recirculation rate is set relatively low, for example when driving at full load, the valve in the exhaust gas recirculation line is closed. Then the exhaust gas cools down in the return line and thus condensate is formed. If the recirculation rate is then increased again, the condensate accumulated in the recirculation line reaches the intake manifold of the engine and, together with the cooled exhaust gas fraction from the dead volume of the recirculation line, leads to an undefined transition behavior of the internal combustion engine. However, since the regulation of the internal combustion engine is matched to hot exhaust gas, this leads to incorrect control of the internal combustion engine which, on the one hand, worsens driving behavior and, on the other hand, can also nullify the improvement in exhaust gas quality which is aimed for by exhaust gas recirculation.

Vorteile der ErfindungAdvantages of the invention

The device according to the invention with the characterizing features of the main claim has the advantage that a formation of condensate is avoided, so that the corrosion in the exhaust gas recirculation line is reduced and that, finally, the transition behavior of the internal combustion engine when changing the recirculation rate and thus the exhaust gas quality is improved.

Advantageous developments of the device specified in the main claim are possible through the measures listed in the subclaims.

Thus, in a preferred embodiment of the invention, the underpressure required for purging the exhaust gas recirculation line is generated with the available means in that the return line is connected to the connection of the front and rear silencers, a point which has a lower pressure than the exhaust side of the internal combustion engine. In a further embodiment of the invention, the flushing is further improved in that a venturi tube is arranged in the pipe section between the front and rear silencer.

Further: advantages result from the description and the attached drawing.

Zeichnungdrawing

The invention is illustrated in the drawing and is explained in more detail in the description below. The single figure shows a basic illustration of an embodiment of a device according to the invention.

Beschreibung des AusführungsbeispielsDescription of the embodiment

In FIG. 1, 10 denotes the cylinder head of an internal combustion engine, the intake side of which consists of an intake pipe 11 with a throttle valve 12 and an intake manifold 13. Accordingly, the exhaust side consists of an exhaust manifold 14, which leads to a front silencer 15, a pipe 16 and a rear silencer 17. The exhaust side of the cylinder head 10 is connected to the intake side via a line. This initially consists of a first line 18 which is connected directly to the exhaust gas outlet of the cylinder head 10 and merges into a second line 19. The second line 19 leads to an exhaust gas recirculation valve 20, from which a third line 21 extends to the intake manifold 13. It is understood that the line routing shown is only meant by way of example and can also be designed differently in the course of professional action, for example by the exhaust gas recirculation valve 20 being arranged directly in the intake manifold 13. According to the invention, a flushing line 22 leads from the connection point of the first line 18 and the second line 19 to the connecting pipe 16 between the front and rear silencers 15, 17. In the pipe 16 there is a pressure relative to the pressure at the point where the first line 18 opens into the exhaust manifold 14 lower pressure. The amount of exhaust gas brought up to the exhaust gas recirculation valve 20 is larger than that required for the actual recirculation by appropriate dimensioning of the lines 18, 19. The excess part of the exhaust gas now flows back through the purge line 22 into the exhaust. This applies in particular when the exhaust gas recirculation valve 20 is closed, so that the entire throughput of the first line 18 flows into the purge line 22. If the second line 19 is designed to be particularly short in terms of construction, the flushing line 22 always ensures an almost complete flow through the exhaust-side return line section. In principle, it would also be possible to lead the purge line 22 directly into the open, since the required pressure conditions would then also be present, but this would cause noise problems, since the exhaust gas flowing out of the purge line 22 would not be soundproofed. For this reason, the embodiment shown in the figure is particularly expedient, since the rear silencer 17 provides sufficient sound absorption. Since the purge line 22 also has a smaller cross section than the normal exhaust line, the damping effect of the rear silencer 17 is also sufficient.

If, with appropriate dimensioning of the exhaust system, the pressure difference between the exhaust manifold 14 and the pipe 16 is too small, the pipe 16 can be provided with a venturi pipe 23 in a further embodiment of the invention, so that the vacuum required in the pipe 16 for the purge is ensured.
