Abstract
A return line (18, 19, 21) is provided for returning exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine and leads from the exhaust side to the intake side of the internal combustion engine. A valve (20) for controlling the return rate is arranged in the line (18, 19, 21). In order to prevent the formation of condensates in the exhaust-side line when the valve is closed, a purge line (22) is provided which leads from the exhaust-side line section (18, 19) to a point with a lower pressure than the exhaust side.
Description
The invention relates to a device according to the preamble of the main claim.
It is known to provide internal combustion engines with so-called exhaust gas recirculation in order to improve the exhaust gas quality. A bypass line leads from the exhaust side of the internal combustion engine to the intake side. A valve is provided in the bypass line, which is controlled according to predetermined criteria for setting the return rate. Such a device is known for example from DE-OS 29 09 465 = US Pat. No. 4,333,440.
In the case of cylinder heads with valves lying side by side, the exhaust gas recirculation line is generally quite short for structural reasons alone. However, in the case of engines with a crossflow cylinder head, this type is one relatively long piping from the exhaust side to the intake side required. If the recirculation rate is set relatively low, for example when driving at full load, the valve in the exhaust gas recirculation line is closed. Then the exhaust gas cools down in the return line and thus condensate is formed. If the recirculation rate is then increased again, the condensate accumulated in the recirculation line reaches the intake manifold of the engine and, together with the cooled exhaust gas fraction from the dead volume of the recirculation line, leads to an undefined transition behavior of the internal combustion engine. However, since the regulation of the internal combustion engine is matched to hot exhaust gas, this leads to incorrect control of the internal combustion engine which, on the one hand, worsens driving behavior and, on the other hand, can also nullify the improvement in exhaust gas quality which is aimed for by exhaust gas recirculation.
The device according to the invention with the characterizing features of the main claim has the advantage that a formation of condensate is avoided, so that the corrosion in the exhaust gas recirculation line is reduced and that, finally, the transition behavior of the internal combustion engine when changing the recirculation rate and thus the exhaust gas quality is improved.
Advantageous developments of the device specified in the main claim are possible through the measures listed in the subclaims.
Thus, in a preferred embodiment of the invention, the underpressure required for purging the exhaust gas recirculation line is generated with the available means in that the return line is connected to the connection of the front and rear silencers, a point which has a lower pressure than the exhaust side of the internal combustion engine. In a further embodiment of the invention, the flushing is further improved in that a venturi tube is arranged in the pipe section between the front and rear silencer.
Further: advantages result from the description and the attached drawing.
The invention is illustrated in the drawing and is explained in more detail in the description below. The single figure shows a basic illustration of an embodiment of a device according to the invention.
In FIG. 1, 10 denotes the cylinder head of an internal combustion engine, the intake side of which consists of an intake pipe 11 with a
If, with appropriate dimensioning of the exhaust system, the pressure difference between the
