Definitions
- the invention relates to a method for producing Fe 2 B layers on workpieces made of ice-based alloys in a heated reaction space, to which BC1 3 (boron trichloride) together with H 2 gas as the carrier gas is supplied as the boron-containing gas.
- BC1 3 boron trichloride
- Wear-resistant Fe 2 B layers on low-alloy steels or other iron-based alloys are usually carried out in practice using the packing process.
- the workpieces to be coated are packed in fine-grain powder and annealed at temperatures of approx. 800 ° C to 950 ° C.
- These production methods for a wear-resistant Fe 2 B layer are very labor-intensive, since the workpieces to be coated are introduced into the glow boxes, are surrounded on all sides with borating powder and then sealed. After the process, the coated workpieces must be tackled. The powder can no longer be used.
- the cleaning of the workpieces is also very complex, since the boron powder, depending on the heat treatment and boron time, may adhere strongly to the recesses in the workpiece. The boron powder is removed from the coated workpieces both mechanically and by washing with hot water.
- DD-A-85 695 states that it is known to borate in the gas stream and that gases such as BCI 3 + H 2 gas are also used.
- the object of the invention is to provide a gaseous boronizing process; in which a deep Fe 2 B layer and only a small or no FeB layer is produced. This is desirable because the FeB layer is very brittle and tends to flake off.
- N 2 gas is supplied as a further carrier gas to the gas mixture in the reaction space under atmospheric pressure and in a first treatment section a proportion of BCI 3 gas in the gas mixture in the furnace atmosphere is below 5% for rapid build-up an iron boride layer, specifically a layer of FeB and an underlying layer of Fe 2 B is selected and in a second immediately following treatment section with a lower or zero concentration of BC1 3 gas in the furnace atmosphere the thickness of the layer FeB is largely reduced.
- the proportion of BCI 3 gas in the gas mixture should be less than 2%.
- Boriding is carried out in a furnace chamber with largely metallic furnace walls.
- FIG. 1 An arrangement for producing FeB-free boride layers from the gas phase on iron-based alloys is shown schematically in the FIG.
- the workpieces 1 to be coated are heated to the desired coating temperature in a reaction vessel 2, the inner surfaces of which consist entirely or predominantly of metal, under the action of a gas mixture.
- the gas composition is chosen so that the outer layer of parts 1 consists essentially of Fe 2 B and the proportion of FeB is as low as possible.
- a gas mixture of H 2 -N Z -BCI 3 gases is fed to the furnace chamber 3, optionally with the addition of HCI gas.
- the use of all 4 gases is explained using the exemplary embodiment described. If necessary, the HCI gas can be eliminated, ie its share becomes zero.
- the amount of gas is influenced by the valves 4, 5, 6 and 7 controlling the gas flow.
- Manually adjustable control valves 4, 5 are provided for the N 2 and H 2 gases and control valves 6, 7 can be influenced for the BCI 3 and HCI gases via control lines.
- Flow meters 12, 13, 14 and 15 are arranged in the respective feed lines 8, 9, 10 and 11.
- the BCI 3 and HCI gases are influenced via the control valves 6 and 7 as a function of the BCI 3 and HCI gas components determined in the gas analyzer 16.
- the target values 18, 19 are compared with the actual values 20, 21 of the gas fractions determined in the gas analysis device 16.
- the determined differential values act as control values 22, 23 on the control valves 6 and 7 and adjust them in such a way that the actual value approaches the predetermined target value.
- the gas is fed to a gas washing device 24 in which HCl and BCl 3 components are precipitated from the exhaust gas 25. This can be done, for example, by neutralization.
- HCl and BCl 3 components are precipitated from the exhaust gas 25.
- This can be done, for example, by neutralization.
- the H 2 component is burned in a corresponding chamber 26.
- the furnace chamber 3 is sealed off from the outside atmosphere by a pot lid 27, which carries the fan 28.
- the furnace space 3 is heated to the desired temperature by a heating winding 29 surrounding the reaction vessel 2. Furthermore, as can be seen in the figure, a fan 28 or the like in the furnace chamber. provided for circulation of the gas atmosphere within the furnace space. For optimal guidance of the gas atmosphere, the treatment room 3 inside the reaction vessel 2 is provided with a gas guide cylinder 30.
- reaction equation The reaction of the gaseous borating agent BCI 3 with the workpiece to be coated can be described by the following reaction equation:
- the released boron is adsorbed by the metal surface and diffuses into the metal workpiece to form FeB or Fe 2 B.
- the proportion of the BCl 3 gas in the carrier gas which consists of N 2 gas and H 2 gas, should be 5% or less, preferably less than 2%.
- the content of BCI 3 gas in the furnace atmosphere is regulated in such a way that values are set which lie between zero and 2% BCI 3 gas.
- the deposition of FeB and Fe 2 B in the outer layer can be influenced by changing the percentage of gases in the furnace atmosphere.
- the supply of HCI gas or BC1 3 is most suitably influenced.
- the FeB formation is reduced in favor of the Fe 2 B formation, since at a constant temperature the activity of the boron on the metal surface is reduced by increasing the HCI concentration in the gas phase.
- the gas atmosphere should be circulated with the continuous supply of reaction gases, so that a homogeneous gas composition is ensured everywhere in the furnace space.
- the thickness of the FeB or Fe 2 B layer can also be influenced by the annealing time and the boronization temperature.
- the growth of the boride layers takes place according to a parabolic time law with rate-determining boron diffusion into the alloy.
- layers of FeB which are formed on the surface of the workpieces when the boriding is not optimal when the gas and temperature are not controlled, can be achieved by a targeted exclusive diffusion annealing in a very low BC1 3 or BC1 3 free atmosphere to the desired Fe 2 B can convert.
