Description

  • The present invention relates to a silencer intended to be incorporated in the exhaust pipe of a motor vehicle, this silencer being most often made of stainless steel or a neighboring material resistant to the agents under consideration.
  • Mufflers are already known which are made from stainless steel or neighboring metal alloys, but we have always encountered great difficulties during the manufacture of these mufflers, because stainless steel is a noble material which is not very easy to open. In addition, if it is necessary to weld, the welds are points of low resistance that corrosion can quickly attack and, therefore, the advantages of stainless steel are greatly diminished, not to say practically nullified. However, since stainless steel is an expensive product, it is absolutely necessary to produce silencers by means ensuring complete resistance to corrosion, therefore if possible without welding. The existence of seamless silencers is already known (see in particular British patent 1 012463). The elements constituting the silencer must be obtained by conventional methods but also with a reduced tooling because it is very expensive and one must be able to reduce this tooling to the strict minimum in order to obtain an attractive cost price and which, even if it is a little higher than the normal price, must, because of stainless steel, provide an economy since this material is much better resistant to the agents considered, i.e. to the acid gases and liquids leaving the engine internal combustion.
  • The present invention creates a muffler which can be manufactured from a reduced and standardized number of parts in order to be able to produce several types of muffler according to the power of the engines and their design so as to considerably limit the cost price in manufacturing.
  • In accordance with the invention, the exhaust pipe consists of the bottoms of two half-shells having transverse undulations in which the arched bottoms of intermediate elements in the form of a box rest, the vertical wings of which terminate in wavy edges in which penetrate semicircular corrugations of plates then all these elements are held in place in the two aforementioned half-shells by the peripheral crimping.
  • According to another characteristic of the invention, the plates have holes on the corrugations connecting the spaces delimited by the plates, the intermediate elements and the half-shells.
  • According to another feature of the invention, the silencer is assembled without any welding, either internal or external.
  • Various other characteristics of the invention will also emerge from the detailed description which follows.
  • An embodiment of the object of the invention is shown, by way of example, in the accompanying drawings.
    • Figure 1 is a plan, partially broken away, of a silencer according to the invention.
    • Figure 2 shows the upper face of a silencer according to the invention, the upper half-shell being simply shown.
    • Figure 3 is a perspective view of one of the elements of the silencer.
    • Figure 4 is a section along line IV-IV of FIG. 1.
  • Figures 5 and 6 are sections along the lines V-V and VI-VI of FIG. 1.
  • In the drawing, the silencer 1 is produced by two half-shells 2, 3 which are not necessarily symmetrical, the upper half-shell 2 possibly being slightly larger than the lower half-shell 3. However, these half-shells include, on their periphery, flat edges 2a, 3a which overlap so as to allow crimping of the periphery of the silencer (see fig. 5 and 6). The half-shells each contain three intermediate elements 5, one of which is shown in perspective in FIG. 3. As can be seen, each intermediate element has the form of a box with an arcuate bottom 5a and whose vertical wings 5b end in wavy edges 5c. The arched bottom 5a normally takes place in corrugations or embossments of transverse stiffening 7 provided in the arched walls of the half-shells 1, 2 (see fig. 4) and thus the corrugations 7 are immediately reinforced by the intermediate elements 5 which are obtained , like each half-shell, by stamping. When the intermediate elements 5 are in place in each half-shell 2, 3, a shaped plate 10 is made to rest on the corrugated edges 5c of the elements 5. The latter, which is of rectangular shape, is present (see FIG. 1 ) three semi-circular undulations 11 which penetrate into the edges 5c of the intermediate elements. In addition, these semi-circular undulations 11 have deformed zones in relief 12 intended to penetrate inside the hollowed-out part of the intermediate elements 5 (see FIG. 4).
  • Between the deformed zones in relief 12, the shaped plates 10 are pierced with a multitude of holes 13 allowing the communication of the interior of the conduits constituted by two superimposed plates 10 held by the intermediate elements 5 and the volumes delimited by the two superimposed half-shells 2, 3.
  • Given the characteristics of the engine to be equipped with this silencer, the holes 13 are drilled in greater or lesser numbers just as it is possible to provide, in the deformed zones in relief 12, holes 12a making it possible to put in communication the tubes formed by two plates 10 superimposed with the hollowed-out interior of the intermediate elements 5 (see fig. 5). This makes it possible to play on the interior volumes of the silencer by allowing the decompression then the circulation along a broken path of the gases which are thus relaxed and cooled and which can therefore exit via the terminal tube 20, towards the atmosphere, completely cooled and by limiting noise as much as possible. 21 designates the tube which brings the exhaust gases from the engine.
  • Depending on the path of the compressed hot gas supply tube, the type of engine, its fuel efficiency, its operation as a two-stroke, four-stroke or diesel engine, it may be necessary to modify not only the number of intermediate elements 5 but also the distance separating these intermediate elements, consequently the distance separating the deformed zones in relief 12 from the plates 10. The number of holes 13 can vary as well as the number of holes 12a drilled in the deformed zones in relief 12 so that the gases exhaust come out through the end tube 20 in the best conditions.
  • Of course Is parts constituting the silencer, that is to say the two half-shells 2, 3, the intermediate elements 5, the plates 10 are perfectly crimped on the edges 2a, 3a of the half-shells 2, 3 like this is common in this kind of silencer made either of stainless steel or of a neighboring metallic material perfectly resistant to the agents considered.
  • The invention is not limited to the embodiment shown and described in detail since various modifications can be made without departing from its scope.

Claims (4)

1. Silencer of corrosion resisting material for exhaust muffler of automobile vehicle, which is made of two halfshells (2, 3) with projecting flanges (2a, 3a) enabling the crimping in which the bottoms of two half-shells have tranverse corrugations (7), these half-shells containing plates (10), characterized in that the transverse corrugations (7) contain the arcuate bottoms (5a) of two intercalary elements (5) each having the shape of small boxes facing each other by their open parts and of which the vertical wings (5b) terminate by corrugated rims (5c) in which enter semi-circular corrugations of the plates (10), then all these elements are maintained in place in the two above mentionel half-shells (2, 3) by the peripheral crimping.
2. Silencer according to claim 1, characterized in that the plates (10) are provided on the corrugations (11) with holes (13) for making a communication between the spaces formed by the plates (10), the intercalary elements (5) and the half-shells (2, 3).
3. Silencer according to one of claims 1 and 2, characterized in that holes (12a) are provided in relief deformed areas (12) of the plates (10) at right angle with the intercalary elements (5).
4. Silencer made according to one of claims 1 to 3, characterized that it is assembled without any solder (neither internal, nor external).
