Process for the preparation of cyanohydrins It has been found that
by catalytic conversion of hydrocyanic acid with aldehydes or ketones, e.g. B. acetone,
pure, light-colored cyanohydrins, e.g. acetone cyanohydrin, can be obtained if one is used as
Catalysts cyanates of metals from z. Group of the Periodic Table used.
Potassium cyanate has proven to be particularly useful, compared to the
previously known accelerators such. B. alkali or alkaline earth hydroxides or
oxides, alkali carbonates, cyanides or organic nitrogen bases, one extraordinary
has a strong accelerating effect on hydrogen cyanide accumulation. The effectiveness
this catalyst is so large that amounts of less than r, 5 mol percent
K C N O, based on acetone, suffice; is preferably only with o, 2 mol percent and
worked under it, since in the presence of larger amounts of catalyst the particularly
high effectiveness of the same can lead to brown discoloration of the reaction products.
CH, - CO - CH, -E- HCN -> (CH,), - C (CN)
(OH)
It has also proven advantageous to work with completely anhydrous, gaseous, pure hydrogen cyanide, the hydrogen cyanide being introduced into the aldehydes or ketones (acetone) containing the catalyst in suspension. The reaction starts immediately at room temperature with warming and is expediently carried out, if necessary with cooling, at about 45 °. It was further found that the equilibrium of cyanohydrin formation, z. B. with acetone, after CH, - CO - CH, -E- HCN -> (CH,), - C (CN) (OH)
shifts in favor of acetone cyanohydrin within a short time if the warm reaction product is cooled to room temperature before stabilization with sulfuric acid.
kleine Mengen Cyanate in homogener Lösung enthalten. In diesem Fall genügt bereits
A particularly favorable embodiment of the method consists in
carry out the reaction with ketones or aldehydes that contain small amounts of water,
namely less than 5 percent by volume, for example only 3 percent by volume, and in these
Contains small amounts of cyanates in a homogeneous solution. In this case it is enough
an extremely small proportion of only 0.02 mole percent K C N 0, based on z. B. on acetone,
to catalyze the reaction.
Instead of concentrated gaseous hydrocyanic acid, dilute hydrocyanic acid-containing gas mixtures, such as those used, for. B. according to the equation CH, -E- NH3 -r HCN -f- 3 H2
from methane and ammonia, which can be used without prior concentration, or liquefied hydrocyanic acid can also be used.
Beispiel i In 58o Teilen Aceton werden
1,45 Teile Kaliumcyanat suspendiert und 27o Teile Blausäure innerhalb 21/2 Stunden
eingeleitet.
etwa i ccm konzentrierter Schwefelsäure, so erhält man ein gelbgefärbtes Reaktionsprodukt
in reines ioo°/oiges Acetoncyanhydrin überführen läßt.
One for the large-scale production of cyanohydrins, z. B. acetone cyanohydrin, a particularly suitable mode of operation is one in which the ketones or aldehydes containing the catalyst heterogeneously or in homogeneous solution flow through a column and gaseous hydrocyanic acid is introduced in countercurrent thereto. Appropriate heating or cooling or heat exchange, regulation of the flow rate of the hydrocyanic acid and the liquids makes it possible to control the reaction temperature in the desired manner and at the same time make the process continuous. The resulting crude cyanohydrin can then be converted into high-percentage cyanohydrin in a known manner after stabilization with sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid or the like by distillation. The catalyst can also be fed to the reactants in any other way. EXAMPLE i 1.45 parts of potassium cyanate are suspended in 58o parts of acetone and 27o parts of hydrocyanic acid are passed in over the course of 21/2 hours. The temperature rises to about 45 ° about 20 minutes after the start of the introduction and is kept constant by cooling. If the mixture is then mixed with the amount of about 1 cc of concentrated sulfuric acid required to destroy the catalyst and stabilize it, a yellow-colored reaction product is obtained with a content of about 83% acetone cyanohydrin. If, on the other hand, the reaction product is cooled to room temperature beforehand and stabilized after about 15 minutes, the equilibrium has shifted in favor of acetone cyanohydrin, and a product is obtained with a content of 88 to 100% acetone cyanohydrin, the yield being 95 to 98 ° / o, based on the amount of hydrogen cyanide consumed. EXAMPLE 2 2 percent by volume of water is added to 58o parts of acetone and 0.14 part of potassium cyanate is dissolved in the mixture; 27o parts of hydrocyanic acid are then introduced within 33/4 hours. About 30 minutes after starting the introduction, the temperature has risen to 45 ° and is kept constant by cooling. After the introduction, the mixture is cooled to 20 ° and stabilized after 30 minutes by adding about 0.2 to 0.2 cc of concentrated sulfuric acid. A pale yellow reaction product with a content of about 88 % acetone cyanohydrin is obtained, which can be converted into pure 100% acetone cyanohydrin by vacuum distillation. The boiling point of the pure product was measured to be 82 ° at 23 mm Hg; its yield was 95 %, based on the amount of hydrogen cyanide consumed. EXAMPLE 3 58o parts of propionaldehyde are cooled to 15 ° and, after the addition of 1.6 parts of KCNO, dissolved in 3 parts of water, 270 parts of anhydrous hydrocyanic acid are introduced over the course of 21/2 hours. The reaction vessel is equipped with a reflux condenser and ground joint stirrer. After just 15 minutes the temperature rises to 40 ° and is kept at this temperature during the reaction by cooling with water. When the introduction is complete, the temperature falls back to 15 °, stirring is continued for a further 1/4 hour and then 1.5 cc of concentrated sulfuric acid is added to destroy the catalyst and stabilize it. The reaction product is distilled in vacuo and, after a small forerun, 808 parts of oxybutyronitrile with a boiling point of 87 to g = °, corresponding to a yield of 95 %, based on the amount of hydrocyanic acid used. The reaction product obtained distills with practically no residue.
