Description

This invention relates to a mechanism or device for producing three positions, respectively called "reclining", "sitting" and "relaxing", of the "head" part and of a part of the mattress of a sofa bed or lounger and for folding the elements of this device, comprising two folding profiles on the sides, which are articulated at their lower part to a longitudinal beam belonging to the frame and are also articulated by a connecting profile in order to form a deformable trapezoid or a four-bar linkage, the ends of the folding profiles being articulated at their upper ends to elements which belong on the one hand to the actual mattress and on the other hand to the backrest which is to be brought into one of the three aforementioned positions, a profile - belonging to the backrest but foldable into the "relaxing" and "bed" positions - being articulated on the one hand to a profile belonging to the mattress.

An example of such a device can be found in the French patent FR-A-2.585.227.

The sofa-beds or divan-beds covered by this document are in fact equipped with devices enabling the backrest to be placed in three positions. However, when the mattress of such a sofa-bed or divan-bed is to be used as a seat or a divan-bed, it is folded back on itself and several manipulations of the mattress-backrest assembly are necessary to bring the backrest into the position in which the whole forms a divan-bed or a seat.

The invention has the precise purpose of proposing a device that makes it possible to move from the bed position to the sitting or sofa position with a single movement.

In order to achieve this aim, according to the invention, the said profile forming part of the mattress is - on the other hand - slidably connected to an adjustment rod, one end of which is pivotally connected to one end of an angle, the other end of which is hingedly mounted on a lever, itself articulated to a blocking lever which is connected to one end is pivotally connected to an aforementioned folding profile, a pin protruding laterally from the angle to fit into a recess provided in the aforementioned blocking lever in the bed position and to leave this recess when the profile is folded over.

Further details and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description of a folding device according to the invention for producing three positions of the backrest and part of the mattress of a sofa bed or lounger.

Figure 1 shows the essential elements of the inventive device in the bed position.

Figure 2 shows the same elements in the bed-head relaxation position.

Figure 3 shows the same essential elements at the beginning of the folding operation to get into the bed-couch position or bed-sitting position.

Figure 4 shows the same elements in a subsequent stage.

Figure 5 shows the same elements at a later stage than that shown in Figure 4.

Figure 6 shows the same elements at a stage close to complete folding.

Figure 7 shows the same elements at a stage where the mattress moves into the "sitting" position.

Figure 8 shows on an enlarged scale the adjustment rod used in the invention.

The device shown in these figures comprises, as already known, a base support 1 to which are hinged folding profiles 2 and 3, which are articulated by a connecting profile 4 to form a deformable trapezoid or a four-bar linkage. The upper ends of the profiles 2 and 3 are articulated to levers, the function of which is described below.

The set of elements of the invention and the levers or triples involved in or influenced by this mechanism comprise a curved lever 5 having a hinge point 6 for an element of the sofa bed (not shown). The curved lever 5 is hinged at 7 to the folding profile 2. The reference numeral 8 indicates the articulation point of this curved lever on a profile 9 belonging to the mattress of the sofa bed.

A profile 10, one end 10' of which is slightly bent upwards, is hingedly connected to this profile 9 at the level of part 11. Part 11, and therefore also profile 10, has a hinge point with profile 9 at 12.

For a better understanding of the mechanism, it should be noted that two levers in 13 are articulated to each other and to the profiles 2 and 3. These are the lever 14, articulated to the folding profile 2 in 15, and the blocking lever 16, articulated to the upper part of the folding profile 2 in 7.

The essential element of the mechanism according to the invention is formed by the angle 17, one end of which is articulated at 18 to an adjustment rod 19 formed by two elements 20 and 21, which can be displaced longitudinally relative to one another. A pin 22 fixed to the profile 10 passes through a longitudinal slot 23 provided in an element 20 and the longitudinal slot 23 provided in the element 21 (Figure 8). The slot 23 has a notch 23' with a slope in one direction to allow the pin 22 to pass (Figures 4 to 7) from the blocking position according to Figures 1 to 3 to a position shown in Figure 7, in which the pin 22 is seated in the end 24 of the slot 23, as shown in Figures 6 and 7 in particular.

The angle 17 is also pivotally mounted in 25 on the lever 14. The angle 17 is equipped with a lateral pin 26 which protrudes laterally and can be placed in the recess 16' of the blocking lever 16. This recess 16' is clearly visible in Figures 3 to 7.

The stroke of the element 21 with respect to the element 20 is determined by the length of the slot 27 in this element, in which a rivet 28 fastened in the element 20 is seated (Figure 8).

When the blocking pin 26 is seated in the recess 16' of the lever 16, the device is in the position shown in Figure 1, i.e. the bed position. This is also the case in the bed-head relaxation position shown in Figure 2.

To change from the bed position to the lying or sitting position, i.e. to move a part of the mattress into the inside of the To enclose the structure formed by the folding profiles 2 and 3, it is sufficient to fold the mattress in the direction of the arrow 29 (Figures 2 to 7).

During the rotation of the blocking lever 16 in relation to the lever 14 and around the pivot point 13, the pin 26 is released.

Due to the weight of the mattress resting on the profile 10 and the resulting pressure on this profile as shown by arrow 30 (Figure 3), a force is exerted on the angle 17 via the adjustment rod 19, pivoting it around the point 25. The resulting movement is indicated by arrow 31 (Figure 3). This releases the adjustment rod 19, whereby the pin 22 slides along the slot 23 and strikes its end 24. During this operation, the pin 22 slides along the inclined section of the notch 23'.

As a result, by a single manipulation of the mattress to move from the bed position to the couch position, the entire set of profiles articulated to one another assumes the position that allows the sofa bed to be moved to the couch position alone, while by removing the mattress to move from the sofa bed position to the bed position, the locking lever 16 with its notched end 16' strikes the pin 22, which locks the profile 10 belonging to the mattress, which can then be moved by the user himself into one of the positions called "bed" or "relax" position.

1. Fitting or device for producing three positions, each called "reclining", "sitting" and "relaxing", of the "head" part and part of the mattress of a sofa bed or a couch and for folding the elements of this device, comprising two folding profiles (2, 3) on the side, which are hinged at their lower part to a longitudinal beam (1) belonging to the frame and are also connected with a joint by a connecting profile (4) in order to form a deformable trapezoid or a four-bar linkage, the ends of the folding profiles (2, 3) being hinged with their upper ends to elements which, on the one hand, belong to the actual mattress and, on the other hand, to the backrest which is to be brought into one of the three aforementioned positions, a profile (10) belonging to the backrest but foldable into the "relaxing" and "bed" positions, on the one hand is articulated to a profile belonging to the mattress, characterized in that said profile (10) is on the other hand slidably connected to a tilting rod (19) one end of which is pivotally connected to one end of an angle (17), the other end of which is articulated on a lever (14), itself articulated to a locking lever (16) which is pivotally connected at one end to an aforementioned folding profile (2), a pin (26) protruding laterally from the angle (17) in order to be placed in a recess (16') provided in the aforementioned locking lever in the bed position and to leave this recess when the profile (10) is folded down.
