Description
The invention relates to liquid, aqueous compositions for softening tissue based on cationic, biodegradable tissue softening agents.
Fabric softening agents have been used for the post-treatment of washed textile products for 25 years now. Fabric softening agents consist of aqueous dispersions of cationic fabric softeners. These compounds also usually contain a number of additives such as fatty alcohols, fatty acids, emulsifiers, aromatic substances, colors, preservatives and electrolytes.
Fabric softeners are usually added to the last rinse water in a washing machine after the wash cycle. The cationic fabric softeners are absorbed by the anionic textile fibers and give the dried textile product the desired feeling of softness as well as antistatic properties. In addition, the use of fabric softeners has other beneficial effects on the dried textile product, such as pleasant smell, improved ironing properties and higher wear resistance.
The fatty acids and/or fatty alcohols contained in the fabric softeners have a beneficial effect on the softness of the dried textile product (function as a co-softener). In addition, these compounds play a role in the viscosity stabilization of the fabric softeners.
Well-known tissue softeners are quaternary ammonium salts such as distearyldimethylammonium chloride (DSDMAC) and certain imidazolinium salts such as alkylmethylimidazolinium chloride. Until around 1990, tissue softeners with poor biodegradability were mainly used.
In many countries, the consumer wants liquid fabric softeners of a viscous nature. A viscous aqueous composition containing non-biodegradable fabric softeners is obtained by adapting the product processing by using suitable fatty acids or fatty alcohols and/or by using certain thickeners. According to EP-A-0 051 983, guar gum, certain guar gum derivatives, polyacrylamides and polyvinyl acetates are used as thickeners in liquid fabric softeners. This patent mentions that cationic guar gum products are unsuitable because flocculation of the cationic fabric softener occurs (page 2, last paragraph). The thickeners used must ensure that the viscosity of the viscous fabric softeners does not change in an undesirable way during prolonged storage.
The use of non-biodegradable fabric softeners and additives is facing increasing opposition due to the environmental problems they cause. For this reason, biodegradable fabric softeners have been introduced to the market by various manufacturers. These biodegradable fabric softeners are described, among others, in European patent applications 293 953 and 293 955 and in the US 4,789,491. However, liquid fabric softeners containing biodegradable fabric softeners are often insufficiently stable during storage (see European Patent Application 293,953, page 2, lines 26 to 28 and US 4,789,491, column 1, lines 44 to 48). Accordingly, there is a need for thickeners for such fabric softeners which are biodegradable and which stabilize the viscosity of these compositions over a longer period of time.
According to US 4,789,491, cellulose ethers, certain synthetic polymers (polyvinyl alcohol, polycarboxy polymers) or cationic guar gum derivatives can be used as thickeners in compositions for softening tissue that contain biodegradable tissue softening agents (column 12, lines 32 to 38). The disadvantages of these thickeners are their high price and/or their low biodegradability.
According to the invention, it has been found that cationic starch products can be advantageously used as thickeners in liquid fabric softening compositions containing biodegradable fabric softening agents. These cationic starch products are relatively inexpensive and highly biodegradable.
The present invention accordingly relates to liquid, aqueous compositions for softening tissue based on biodegradable tissue softening agents containing a gelatinized cationic starch as a thickening agent.
It has been found that compositions containing cationic starch as a thickener have a surprisingly high viscosity. This means that relatively little cationic starch is needed to produce compositions with a specified desired viscosity.
The aqueous compositions according to the invention have a water content of preferably 60 to 97% by weight. The pH of the composition according to the invention for softening fabric is usually between 1 and 5 and preferably between 2 and 4. The desired pH can be adjusted by adding acids.
Methods for producing cationic starch are described by DB Solarek, Cationic Starches in the book by OB Wurzburg (editor), Modified Starches: Properties and Uses, CRC Press, Inc., Boca Raton, Florida, 1986, pages 113 to 130. All different types of starch can be used as starting material for the production of the cationic starch used in connection with the invention, such as potato starch, corn starch, wheat starch, tapioca starch, pea starch, and starch types having an amylopectin content of more than 95% by weight (based on solids). Before, after or during the cationization reaction, the starch can be physically, chemically and/or enzymatically modified. The term "cationic starch" as used herein includes these additionally modified starch products. The degree of substitution (DS) of the cationic starch to be used according to the invention is preferably between 0.005 and 0.5 and preferably between 0.01 and 0.2. The amount of cationic starch to be used according to the invention (based on the solids) is preferably between 0.1 and 5% by weight and more preferably between 0.2 and 1.5% by weight. based on the weight of the liquid, aqueous tissue softening composition.
The liquid, aqueous composition for softening tissue may further contain various adjuvants and additives such as aromatic substances, dyes, preservatives, dispersants, emulsifiers, fatty acids, fatty acid alcohols, salts and non-ionic surfactants.
The cationic starch to be used according to the invention is preferably first gelatinized in water, after which the starch solution thus obtained (optionally after cooling) is mixed with an aqueous dispersion of the biodegradable fabric softening agent while stirring. It is also possible to mix pregelatinized cationic starch (as a dry product or after dissolving in water) with the dispersions of the fabric softening agents.
In the following examples, the Henkel product Au-46 is used as a cationic fabric softener. This product consists of 90% by weight of an active ingredient (methyltriethanolammonium distearate methyl sulfate) and 10% by weight of isopropanol.
An aqueous dispersion of the fabric softener is obtained by mixing Au-16 with demineralized water and stirring the mixture at 1500 rpm for 30 minutes. The resulting dispersion is diluted by adding demineralized water until the desired concentration of fabric softener is achieved.
The starch solution to be used is obtained by mixing the starch product into demineralized Water while stirring and heating the resulting mixture for 30 minutes at 90 to 95ºC while stirring. The resulting starch solution is then cooled to 20ºC. This starch solution is diluted to the desired starch concentration by adding water.
The liquid tissue softening composition is obtained by mixing the aqueous dispersion of such tissue softening agent with the starch solution in amounts such that the compositions prepared contain the desired amounts of tissue softening agent and starch product. If desired, additives permitted under the relevant regulations, such as preservatives and aromatic substances, can be incorporated into the tissue softening composition.

The viscosities given in the following examples (in mPa.s) were determined using a Brookfield viscometer type RVT at 20 rpm, spindle 2 and 20ºC.
Tabelle 1 Viskositäten in mPa.s bei 20ºC Various types of starch products were used as thickeners in liquid tissue softening compositions. Table 1 shows the influence of starch type on the viscosity and stability (when stored at 20ºC) of the liquid tissue softening compositions. Table 1 Viscosities in mPa.s at 20ºC
Table 1 shows that cationic starch of the fabric softening composition compared to other types of starch with incorporated anionic or non-ionic substituents a much higher viscosity. Furthermore, this viscosity remains highly stable during storage of the composition.
Tabelle 2 Viskositäten in mPa.s bei 20ºC In this example, the influence of the amount of cationic starch on the viscosity of the fabric softening composition is determined. Table 2 Viscosities in mPa.s at 20ºC
Table 2 shows that cationic potato starch imparts a higher viscosity to liquid fabric softening compositions than native potato starch (at the same concentrations). Furthermore, it is clear that the viscosity of the compositions increases with increasing starch concentration and remains stable.
Tabelle 3 Viskositäten in mPa.s bei 20ºC In this example, the influence of storage temperature on the viscosity of tissue softening compositions is determined. Table 3 Viscosities in mPa.s at 20ºC
From Table 3 it can be seen that the cationic starches impart a higher viscosity to the liquid fabric softening compositions even at a storage temperature of 37ºC than the starch products with non-ionic substituents.
Tabelle 4 Viskositäten in mPa.s bei 20ºC From this example it can be seen that cationic starch in highly concentrated fabric softening compositions (12 % by weight of fabric softening agent) provides a high and stable viscosity. Table 4 Viscosities in mPa.s at 20ºC
