Abstract

This invention relates to apparatus and methods for dispensing a series of pills in a prescribed order. Although a variety of dispensers are available the designs are inadequate to serve the needs of the patient by assuring the medication is administered in the prescribed sequence. A pill package (110) is disposed within the dispenser (100) and is locked in place and cannot be removed. A plunger (120) is provided to facilitate the expulsion of a pill from the pill package. The pill package (110) automatically advances to the next dispensing position immediately after the expulsion of the proper pill. A calendar indicator (130) is provided for designating the period the pills are to be taken. The indicator can be present to indicate a specific day the first pill is to be taken. The indicator can also be set by the user to locate any day of the week the first pill is to be taken.

Description

Bei einer bevorzugten Ausführungsform wird, wenn der Auswerfer 120 das erste Mal niedergedrückt wird, die Verriegelung 167 aufgebrochen, so daß sich die Pillenpackung 110 relativ zur Basis 102 drehen kann. Wie oben erläutert, entspricht die Anzahl der Zähne 265 der Anzahl der Räume in der Pillenpackung und der Anzahl der Pillen in der Packung, so daß die schrittweise Bewegung des Kalenderrades den richtigen Tag, der an der Oberseite des Kalenderrades angezeigt wird, mit der ersten Pille, die einzunehmen ist, in Ausrichtung bringt. Die oben erwähnten flexiblen Finger 182, 184 sind so geformt, daß dieser gegenseitige Eingriff aufrechterhalten bleibt. Beim Drücken auf die Oberseite des Kalenderrades 130 biegen sich die flexiblen Finger 182, 184, so daß sich das Kalenderrad nach unten bewegen kann, wodurch die Zähne des Kalenderrades an wenigstens einem flexiblen Finger 184 von den entsprechenden Zähnen 265 der Pillenpackung freikommen. Das Kalenderrad 130 kann dann gedreht werden, bis der gewünschte Starttag mit der ersten zu entnehmenden Pille in einer Linie ist. Claims

1. Device (100) for dispensing a series of pills over a predetermined period of time, comprising:

(a) a lid (104);

(b) a base body (102) which forms a housing with the cover (104), with:

(i) a dispensing slot (112) for dispensing a pill;

(ii) a base indexing wheel (150) having at least one flexible projection (155) extending from the base (102) for causing a stepwise rotational movement of a substantially cylindrical pill package in one direction; and

(iii) a device (154) engaging the base body for holding a cooperating part of the device;

(c) a substantially cylindrical pill pack (110) between the lid (104) and the base body (102) with two substantially circular side parts, the pill pack (110) containing a number of pills and

(i) a first (160) and a second (162) concentric ring element, the ring elements being provided with radial ribs arranged therebetween which form a plurality of spaces for holding the pills, the first concentric ring element (160) further comprising a plurality of ratchet teeth (265) arranged on an outer side;

(ii) a third concentric ring member (164) within the first (160) and second (162) ring members having a number of inwardly directed ratchet teeth (163) on a surface of the third ring member (164);

(iii) a frangible cover (166, 168) secured to the two substantially circular side portions of the pill package (110) and having at least one groove (165) disposed on the third concentric ring member (164); and

(iv) a pill pack engaging device (100) for holding a cooperating part of the device (100);

(d) an ejector (120) near the pill pack (110) for dispensing a pill from the pill pack (110) with

(i) a substantially circular portion having a number of triangular projections (174) arranged in a substantially circular row perpendicular to the circular portion;

(ii) a substantially triangular extension (170) extending laterally from the circular portion, the extension (170) further comprising a lug (172) projecting perpendicularly therefrom; and

(iii) an ejector engaging device (176) for holding a cooperating part of the device (100); and

(e) a calendar display device (130) in contact with the pill pack (110) for indicating the period of time within which a pill must be taken, with

(i) a substantially circular calendar ring (130) with calendar markings provided thereon; and

(ii) a device (182, 184) engaging the calendar indicator (130) for holding a cooperating part of the device (100),

whereby, upon application of a force urging the ejector (120) into the base body (102), the lug (172) forces a pill through the frangible lid (166) attached to the pill package (110) and through the dispensing slot (112) and the triangular projections (174) of the ejector bend the at least one flexible projection (155) of the base body (102) which then engages the next flexible tooth or teeth of the set of ratchet teeth (163) on the third ring member (164) such that release of the ejector (120) returns the at least one flexible projection (155) to its or their original position and advances the pill package (110) thereby positioning the next pill for receipt by the dispensing slot.

2. Device (100) according to claim 1, wherein the device engaging the base body consists of at least one flexible projection (154) extending from the base body and the at least one groove (165) arranged within the pill package (110).

3. Device (100) according to claim 1, wherein the device (162, 164) actuating the calendar indicator (130) consists of at least one flexible projection (182) and at least one engaging tooth (184), and wherein the interaction of the engaging tooth (184) and the number of Ratchet teeth (265) of the first concentric ring member (160) result in incremental rotational movement between the calendar indicator (130) and the pill pack (110), and the flexible projection (184) enables any of the calendar markings provided thereon to be positioned on the calendar indicator (130) such that the first pill in the series can be set to the time period within which the first pill is dispensed.

4. A method of dispensing a series of pills using the device (100) according to any one of claims 1 to 3.

5. The method of claim 4, further comprising the step of presetting the calendar indicator (130) to correlate the first pill of the series with the time period within which the first pill is dispensed.
