Um bei Wasserhaltungs - und ähnlichen Maschinen bei einem Bruch des Gestänges etc. das Durchgehen der Maschine und die damit verbundenen Folgen gänzlich unmöglich zu machen, ist der in folgendem beschriebene Apparat construirt. Derselbe besteht im wesentlichen aus zwei mit Wasser gefüllten Cylindern aal, in welchen die Kolben b b1 sich hin- und herbewegen lassen. Der Kolben b steht mit irgend einem beweglichen Theil der Maschine in Verbindung und macht die Hübe derselben mit, während der Kolben bl in Verbindung mit einem Durchgangsventil, einer Drosselklappe oder dergleichen in der Hauptdampfleitung steht. Zwischen beiden Gylindern sind Rückschlagventile c c' und seitlich des Cylinders α ein Durchgangs- oder Regulirventil d angeordnet. Wird die Maschine durch einen Gestängebruch , plötzlichen Wassermangel in den Pumpen etc. entlastet, so wird (z. B. bei tiefstem Stand des Maschinenkolbens, in welcher Stellung die meisten derartigen Unfälle vorkommen) der eintretende Dampf mit grofser Geschwindigkeit den Kolben nach oben treiben. In diesem Falle kann das Wasser über dem Kolben b nicht, wie bei normaler Geschwindigkeit, einfach durch das Regulirventil d auf die untere Seite des Kolbens b treten, sondern ein Theil des Wassers wird durch das Rückschlagventil c in den Cylinder α1 gedrückt und hebt hier den Kolben b1 in die Höhe, wodurch das Dampfventil e sofort geschlossen wird. Ein gleicher Vorgang in entgegengesetzter Richtung geht natürlich vor sich, wenn der Maschinenkolben in der Bewegung nach abwärts gerichtet war, als der Bruch eintrat. Um einem zu hohen Druck in dem Apparat vorzubeugen, ist das Sicherheitsventil f angebracht. Das Ueberlaufrohr g läfst das Wasser bei einem zu hohen Stande des Kolbens b1 ins Freie treten. Das Rückschlagventil h dient zum Füllen. Man braucht bei diesem Apparat also nur das Regulirventil d so zu öffnen, dafs bei der gewünschten Maximalumdrehungszahl noch gerade das Wasser genug Querschnitt rindet, um zwischen der oberen und unteren Seite des Kolbens b circuliren zu können.If the machine is relieved by a broken linkage, a sudden lack of water in the pumps, etc., then (e.g. when the machine piston is at its lowest level, in which position most such accidents occur) the steam entering the piston will drive the piston upwards at great speed.
