Description
The invention relates to a method and devices for the production of coated paper with a smooth coating by applying a coating to the surface of the paper by means of a coating surface rotating in the opposite direction to the direction of travel of the paper, the excess coating to a through the gap between it. and the paper web or a coating slip transfer surface, and is characterized by the fact that the aqueous mineral coating slip applied directly to the paper web or indirectly through the transfer surface is spread by means of the circumferential coating surface in such a way that the speed of the circumferential coating surface is kept within one range which comprises at least 15 ° / 0 but less than 100 ° / o the speed of the paper web or the transfer surface. According to the invention, the advantageous effect is further supported by the fact that the paper web is moistened before the coating slip is applied. The aim of the invention is to reliably achieve a smooth surface without a structure when using aqueous mineral coating slips which, in contrast to coating slips such as varnishes, paints and the like, do not have the property of flowing out, so that unevenness in the coating, for example due to the application batches, is not evened out can. The aqueous mineral coating slips are generally a dispersion of a mineral pigment, e.g. B. kaolin or satin white., And a binder, z. B. casein or starch, in water and require, when using the known coating process, a subsequent smoothing by means of special smoothing rollers or brushes going back and forth, but still a disadvantageous structure remains. According to the method according to the invention, however, a completely uniform, smooth and structureless coating of aqueous mineral coating slips is achieved with certainty.
A device particularly suitable for carrying out the method with an in opposite direction to the direction of paper travel circumferential coating surface, which in a distance from the paper web that determines the thickness of the coating slip or the coating mass transfer surface is arranged, has .invention according to a formed by the circumferential coating surface and the paper web or transfer surface and through one up. the circumferential brushing surface grinding wiper limited Storage space in such an arrangement that the circumferential coating surface enters the nip any excess mineral coating material that has occurred is transported back into the storage room immediately.
Es ist bereits vorgeschlagen worden, bei der Herstellung von Gelatinepapier Gelatine mit Hilfe einer in entgegengesetzter Richtung zur Papierlaufrichtung umlaufenden Streichfläche auf die Papierbahn aufzutragen und dieIt has already been suggested to use gelatin in the manufacture of gelatin paper with the help of a coating surface that runs in the opposite direction to the direction of paper travel to apply to the paper web and the
Excess coating slip on through the gap between it and the paper web to cross off a certain amount. A predetermined speed relationship between However, the coating surface and paper web, as mentioned, do not exist and are apparently at the Covering paper with gelatin is also not necessary.
Such a predetermined speed ratio is also ignored in the known processes for the production of coated papers, in which a presumably non-mineral coating slip is applied by means of a coating surface rotating in the opposite direction to the direction of paper travel and the excess coating slip is applied through the gap between it and the paper web or a Coating mass transfer surface is scraped off to a certain extent. In this known method, for example, the circumferential coating surface was operated at a speed 200 to 300 ° / 0 greater than the speed of the paper web. With such speed ratios, it is not possible to achieve uniform, structureless and smooth coatings when using mineral coating slips.
It was also known to use an applicator roller to apply color coatings to paper surfaces, but which rotates in the same direction as the paper web and at a speed that is approximately 40 ° / 0 greater. However, such a method is completely useless for aqueous mineral coating slips. Even if, as is also known, the applicator roller rotates opposite to the direction of paper travel, as was also proposed for the application of colors, the application of this known measure to aqueous mineral coating slips is unsuccessful, if not that mentioned earlier. correct speed ratio is maintained. This also applies to the known process for applying photographic gelatin emulsions to papers previously coated with baryta coating, the speed of the applicator roller rotating in the opposite direction to the direction of travel of the paper being changed only with regard to the amount of the emulsion to be applied, which also has different flow properties than one aqueous mineral coating.
In all of these known devices, there is also the one through the circumferential brushing surface and the storage space for the coating slip formed by the paper web or the transfer surface not arranged in such a way that the um-; 60 running coating surface in the nip any coating slip that has occurred is transported back directly into the storage room, but rather just the other way around.
The invention will now be explained in more detail with reference to the drawing.
Fig. 1 to 4 schematically illustrate four forms of embodiment of a device to carry out the new procedure.
In FIG. 1, the paper web P is guided around the roller A , which serves as a base for the paper web. D is a doctor roller which rotates in the same direction of rotation as roller A, so that the surfaces of the two rollers move in opposite directions at the points of closest approach, ie in the roller mouth. W is a wiper which removes substantially all of the coating composition from roller D. C is an accumulation of watery mineral coating mass in the mouth between rollers A and D.
Each of the rollers A and D is smooth and made of a material, such as steel, which does not absorb the aqueous mineral coating. Each of the rollers A and D is provided with some known means for rotating at any desired speed.
■The wiper W can be made of rubber, soft metal or another suitable material. The aqueous mineral coating mass can be fed to the mouth by any known means, for example a gutter. ■
When the paper is moved at a given speed and the doctor roller D is rotated very slowly in the same angular direction as roller A (Fig. 1), the coating is distributed on the paper in the form of longitudinal furrows, i.e. longitudinal strips of relatively thick coating, which alternate with vertical strips of thin coating. As the speed of the doctor roller D is increased, these furrows gradually become less pronounced, become closer together, and finally disappear completely to form a very even coating of coating slip on the paper. This is not the case if, according to the invention, the speed of the doctor roller is kept in a range which comprises at least 15 ° / 0 , but less than 100% of the speed of the paper web or the transfer surface. Furthermore, when the doctor roller D is accelerated, the coating layer shows a particularly streaky appearance, and at an even higher speed the coating takes on a corrugated or corrugated appearance. These corrugations can be large and wide or small and numerous or co-
